Hola amigos, les saludo con respeto y cariño desde la República Bolivariana de Venezuela, espero que tanto ustedes como sus seres queridos se encuentren muy bien de salud y bajo la protección de Dios. En esta oportunidad les traigo una publicación interesante que tiene que ver con el servicio postal venezolano (Filatelia, Estampillas, Cartas, Sellos Postales, Envíos y Recepción) en fin, el mundo antiguo de las comunicaciones y en la actualidad el mundo maravilloso de los coleccionistas. La filatelia es la afición por coleccionar y clasificar sellos, sobres y otros documentos postales, así como estudiar la historia postal. Resulta que mientras caminaba junto a mi esposa por Caracas observamos una edificación colonial con bonita fachada y muy bien conservada, al preguntarle a mi esposa me informó que esa edificación era la antigua oficina del correo de Caracas, esa información me interesó y decidí investigar su historia y estilo arquitectónico. En esta publicación haré una breve reseña histórica del lugar, espero que sea del agrado de los lectores.

This time I bring you an interesting publication that has to do with the Venezuelan postal service (Philately, Stamps, Letters, Postage Stamps, Shipping and Reception) in short, the ancient world of communications and today the wonderful world from collectors. Philately is the hobby of collecting and classifying stamps, envelopes and other postal documents, as well as studying postal history. that while I was walking with my wife through Caracas we observed a colonial building with a beautiful facade and very well preserved, when I asked my wife she informed me that this building was the Former post office in Caracas, that information interested me and I decided to investigate its history and architectural style. In this publication I will make a brief historical review of the place, I hope it is to the liking of the readers.

Antes de comenzar es bueno aclarar que los antiguos servicios postales eran muy importantes porque se encargaban de enviar, recibir, ordenar, manejar, transmitir y entregar el correo; pero los servicios postales eran mas que envío y recepción de correspondencia, también formaban parte de la dinámica política y económica del País, eran el corazón de las comunicaciones. En la actualidad existen compañías privadas muy eficientes prestando este tipo de servicios alrededor del mundo y para ello cuentan con tecnología de punta que permite mucha eficiencia y calidad de servicio. Otro dato muy importante que se relaciona directamente con este tema es la Filatelia, definida en el párrafo anterior. La Filatelia es muy importante porque a través de los sellos postales o estampillas es representada la historia de un país o de una región, a través de imágenes de sus héroes nacionales, artistas, músicos, deportistas y científicos; también las estampillas ilustran la belleza de la naturaleza y los monumentos históricos, naturales o arquitectónicos, el arte, la religión y la cultura en sus distintas expresiones; en fin, es un tema amplio y hasta complejo que en la actualidad mueve mucho dinero entre coleccionistas y amantes de la historia postal.

Philately is very important because through postage stamps or stamps the history of a country or a region is represented, through images of its national heroes, artists, musicians, athletes and scientists; stamps also illustrate the beauty of nature and historical, natural or architectural monuments, art, religion and culture in their different expressions; In short, it is a broad and even complex subject that currently moves a lot of money among collectors and lovers of postal history.

Entrando en materia nos encontramos que esta propiedad perteneció originalmente al I Conde Martín de Tovar, Martín de Tovar y Blanco, quien la hereda a su hijo del mismo nombre, Martín Tovar y Ponte. La construcción de la casona data de 1781. Desde 1860 al 20 de mayo de 1861, en plena Guerra Federal, el edificio de Carmelitas fue sede presidencial de donde despachó, Manuel Felipe de Tovar, bisnieto del Conde y a quien en línea de sucesión correspondía el título. Posteriormente la casa fue sede del Ministerio de Guerra y Marina (actual Ministerio del Poder Popular para la Defensa) y para la década de 1930 pasa a ser la Dirección General y Administración Principal de Correos de Caracas, por lo cual se decide modificar radicalmente la antigua casa. Existe un dato histórico importante que asegura que en 1827 Alexander von Humboldt y Aimé Bonpland, se hospedaron en esta casa al llegar a Caracas en 1799. Además en ese mismo lugar, los hacendados y mantuanos caraqueños ofrecieron allí un banquete al Libertador Simón Bolívar,

Es bueno señalar que a mediados del siglo XVIII estuvo en ese lugar el antiguo Convento de las Carmelitas Descalzas de Santa Teresa, ese dato es el que aclara el origen del nombre del edificio del correo y de la esquina ubicada en la avenida Urdaneta, parroquia Catedral del Municipio Libertador, Caracas. Para 1932, en pleno período gomecista la estructura de la casona es modificada casi por completo incluyendo la construcción de una nueva fachada de estilo gótico, puertas, ventanas y una tercera planta pero conservando elementos originales como algunas paredes y la escalera de piedra, desde ese momento se transforma en la sede del Correo de Caracas. Sus fachadas se caracterizan por presentar elementos ornamentales de inspiración neobarroca cuya autoría se le adjudica al arquitecto Luis Eduardo Chataing.

El Edificio del Correo de Carmelitas tiene de dos entradas: la de la esquina que da acceso a la Oficina de Despacho de Telegramas y la principal, en la fachada norte. Al entrar se encuentran unas escaleras que conducen a los niveles superiores del edificio, donde los espacios se organizan siguiendo el mismo esquema de la planta baja. Mi esposa si ha entrado pero yo nunca lo he hecho, ella me describió un poco el lugar aunque sólo iba a llevar cartas. En la investigación que hice con relación al aspecto arquitectónico encontré lo siguiente:En el tercer nivel se encuentran los archivos, depósitos y una biblioteca. El patio principal fue cubierto por un techo con plafond de vidrio de 260 metros cuadrados, soportado por una armadura de acero. El resto está construido por una azotea de concreto armado.
En la actualidad toda la zona se ve muy bonita, pude ver mucha seguridad militar. El edificio se ve remozado mostrando las fachadas en perfecto estado, lastima que estaba todo cerrado porque me hubiera gustado poder ingresar. Antes de finalizar deseo darle las gracias por haber llegado hasta aquí; espero que haya sido de su agrado. Reciba un fuerte abrazo virtual cargado de bendiciones, energía positiva y mucha luz.

The Carmelitas Post Office Building has two entrances: the one on the corner that gives access to the Telegram Dispatch Office and the main one, on the north façade. Upon entering, there are stairs that lead to the upper levels of the building, where the spaces are organized following the same scheme as the ground floor. My wife has gone in but I have never done it, she described the place a little to me although she was only going to take letters. In the research I did in relation to the architectural aspect, I found the following:On the third level are the archives, warehouses and a library. The main courtyard was covered by a 260 square meter glass plafond roof, supported by a steel frame. The rest is built by a reinforced concrete roof.
At present the whole area looks very beautiful, I could see a lot of military security. The building is renovated showing the facades in perfect condition, it is a pity that everything was closed because I would have liked to be able to enter.
