In addition, Catholic Christians know that the day of this celebration originates from the time of the great Roman empire. The emperor Constantine the Great, who was originally not a Christian, maintained constant wars with the barbarian peoples on the banks of the Danube.
They say that on one occasion, while the emperor was sleeping, he had a dream in which a cross was presented to him in the air with the legend: "With this sign you will conquer." The day after that dream, the emperor carried a Cross to combat and exclaimed: "I trust in Christ in whom my mother Elena believes." This revelation prompted the emperor to order his army to carry a cross in each battle and thus managed to defeat his rivals without major problem.

Fuente / Source

Constantine had churches built and sent his mother, now Santa Elena, to look for the vestiges of the cross of Christ. She, with the help of several priests and wise men from Jerusalem, managed to find three pieces of wood, which achieved some miracles such as curing the sick. From there the celebration of the Holy Cross was born. Fuente / Source
