Si yo pudiera borrar algunos capítulos de la historia de la humanidad, sin lugar a dudas, que borraría las injusticias, las guerras, las tragedias naturales o las que provoca el hombre, las enfermedades y el hambre. Uno de los momentos mas terribles vividos en la antiguedad y que serían borrados inmediatamente de la historia sería el llamado Día de los santos Inocentes o la conmemoración del episodio hagiográfico del cristianismo: la matanza de los niños menores de dos años nacidos en Belén, ordenada por el rey Herodes I el Grande con el fin de deshacerse del recién nacido Jesús de Nazaret.

If I could erase some chapters of the history of humanity, without a doubt, that would erase injustices, wars, natural tragedies or those caused by man, disease and hunger. One of the most terrible moments lived in antiquity and that would be immediately erased from history would be the so-called Day of the Holy Innocents or the commemoration of the hagiographic episode of Christianity: the massacre of children under two years born in Bethlehem, ordered by King Herod I the Great in order to get rid of the newborn Jesus of Nazareth.

Este oscuro episodio sigue siendo estudiado a profundidad porque existen historiadores que afirman que jamás ocurrió y otros dicen que si pasó, ambas corrientes muestran pruebas de lo que defienden; sin embargo, la Iglesia católica recuerda este acontecimiento cada 28 de diciembre, aunque de acuerdo con el Evangelio de Mateo, la matanza debió haber sucedido después de la visita de los magos de Oriente al rey Herodes el Grande, fecha que tampoco se sabe con exactitud. Lo cierto es que, hasta ahora, ninguno de los historiadores de la época menciona el hecho; ojalá no haya ocurrido. Los cristianos no contradecimos las sagradas escrituras, por esa razón, damos por cierto el evangelio de san Mateo 2, 13-18.

This dark episode continues to be studied in depth because there are historians who affirm that it never happened and others say that if it happened, both currents show evidence of what they defend; However, the Catholic Church remembers this event every December 28, although according to the Gospel of Matthew, the massacre must have happened after the visit of the Magi from the East to King Herod the Great, a date that is not exactly known either. . The truth is that, until now, none of the historians of the time mentions the fact; I hope it didn't happen. Christians do not contradict the sacred scriptures, for that reason, we take for granted the gospel of Saint Matthew 2, 13-18.

En el Evangelio de san Mateo 2, 13-18, se puede leer lo que ocurrió después de que los magos partieron de Belén, el ángel del Señor se le apareció en sueños a José y le dijo: “Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre y huye a Egipto. Quédate allá hasta que yo te avise, porque Herodes va a buscar al niño para matarlo”. Esta frase; "Herodes va a buscar al niño para matarlo" es facilmente comprobable si tomamos en cuenta lo que escribió el historiador Flavio Josefo (37–101) acerca de Herodes el grande. Josefo presentó a Herodes como un ser patológicamente celoso de su poder: varios de sus familiares fueron asesinados por orden suya, ya que sospechaba que trataban de suplantarlo. Lo cierto es que existen historiadores que, dado el caracter de Herodes afirman que este hecho si ocurrió. El historiador, arqueólogo y explorador Stewart Perowne señaló que la matanza:

«La matanza de los niños inocentes es totalmente coherente con todo lo que sabemos de Herodes».

Pidamos a Dios que un hecho como este jamás se repita. NOTA: En muchos países se toma este día para jugar y hacer bromas a la gente, creo que no se debería utilizar una tragedia (ocurrida o no) para tal fin.

In the Gospel of Saint Matthew 2, 13-18, you can read what happened after the magi left Bethlehem, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said: “Get up, take the child and his mother and flees to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, because Herod is going to look for the child to kill him.” This phrase; "Herod is going to look for the child to kill him" is easily verifiable if we take into account what the historian Flavio Josefo wrote (37– 101) about Herod the Great. Josephus presented Herod as a being pathologically jealous of his power: several of his relatives were killed by his order, since that he suspected they were trying to impersonate him. The truth is that there are historians who, given Herod's character, affirm that this fact did occur. Historian, archaeologist, and explorer Stewart Perowne noted that the massacre:

"The slaughter of innocent children is totally consistent with everything we know about Herod."

Let us pray to God that an event like this never be repeated. NOTE: In many countries this day is taken to play games and make jokes to people, I think that a tragedy (happened or not) should not be used for that purpose.

Lectura del santo evangelio según san Mateo (2,13-18):

Después de que los magos partieron de Belén, el ángel del Señor se le apareció en sueños a José y le dijo: “Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre y huye a Egipto. Quédate allá hasta que yo te avise, porque Herodes va a buscar al niño para matarlo”.

José se levantó y esa misma noche tomó al niño y a su madre y partió para Egipto, donde permaneció hasta la muerte de Herodes. Así se cumplió lo que dijo el Señor por medio del profeta: De Egipto llamé a mi hijo.

Cuando Herodes se dio cuenta de que los magos lo habían engañado, se puso furioso y mandó matar, en Belén y sus alrededores, a todos los niños menores de dos años, conforme a la fecha que los magos le habían indicado.

Así se cumplieron las palabras del profeta Jeremías: En Ramá se ha escuchado un grito, se oyen llantos y lamentos: es Raquel que llora por sus hijos y no quiere que la consuelen, porque ya están muertos.

A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew (2,13-18):

After the wise men left Bethlehem, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, because Herod is going to look for the child to kill him ”.

Joseph got up and that same night took the boy and his mother and left for Egypt, where he remained until Herod's death. Thus was fulfilled what the Lord said through the prophet: Out of Egypt I called my son.

When Herod realized that the magi had deceived him, he was furious and ordered to kill, in and around Bethlehem, all the children under two years of age, according to the date that the magi had indicated.

Thus the words of the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled: In Ramah a cry has been heard, cries and lamentations are heard: it is Rachel who cries for her children and does not want them to comfort her, because they are already dead.
