On the last day of our trip to Lancaster, PA visiting my brother, our family loaded up and traveled to the nearby Amish community. Our goal was an unforgettable feast. There are many Amish buffets, but we decided upon Shady Maple Smorgasbord.
Smörgåsbord is a buffet-style meal of Swedish origin. It is served with various hot and cold dishes.
I had only been to a place like this once before and it was when I was a very young boy, pre-teen age sometime. I remember loving it, but my belly was nowhere near as prepared as I am now as a 30-year-old grown man.
If you aren't familiar with the Amish, you should do some research, or simply ask AI. As a matter of fact, I will do that for you and place a screenshot below:
They grow their own vegetables and raise/slaughter their animals. This is what made us want to eat at one of their buffets. Local food always seems to taste better and it's much better for you than highly processed and genetically modified foods.
It's also common for them to not use technology. I'm not sure how exactly they are still able to run a business with things like digital cash registers, but I guess they bend the rules when it comes to business. Otherwise, they are focused on working hard and have a pretty strict life. There is no temptation from social media or things on tv. Most of them have never even touched an iPhone for instance.
Although they may not be too familiar with the digital age, they are experts in the old ways of living. Imagine stepping back 200 years in time, that's basically how they live. Horse and buggy instead of a car. Among many other things that seem odd in today's world. I would never want to live like that, but I respect those who do and appreciate the services that they offer outsiders like myself.
Back to the food. There was a little bit of everything. There must have been close to 100 different dishes. Meats of all kinds, every side you can imagine, and then some. Plus the desserts were endless, you could have just about anything you desired.
My entire family ended up going a little overboard. We wanted to try everything and also wanted to get our money's worth. I had 2-3 plates of food and I think everyone else did the same, if not more. By the end, I tried a total of 10 different desserts. I had a raspberry cheesecake that was to die for. Thankfully the desserts were small portions so you could try a lot without having to waste food.
I was uncomfortably full when we finished. All I wanted to do was go to sleep, but there was no nap in my future. We went shopping for a bit afterward and I remained in the car suffering from food coma symptoms. It was rough, but so worth it to get to try so many different types of food.
This experience made me wish that I lived closer to an Amish community so that I could take advantage of their good eats more often. Despite my brother living less than a half hour from the place, this was his first time going to the buffet despite living in Lancaster for several years now.
I couldn't eat like this every day, but it was such a treat to get to splurge like this. I'm glad I got to enjoy this meal with my family and we will always have this memory.
This concludes my trip to visit my brother in Lancaster. I hope that you've enjoyed getting to peek into my life and see how lucky I am to have an awesome family.

Sounds like a great trip. No food pics? Would have loved to see some of the dishes you ate! I would definitely try this too. I haven't had much Amish food outside of pies and jams and they're usually super delicious! Cheers
!BEER
I'm not big on food pics. Probably because I enjoy eating so much. Just feels cringe taking photos of my food before I eat it. Like... that stuff is about to just turn into a big turd eventually anyway.
LMAO, I actually agree with this. I generally avoid them as well, but when the food is unique, a picture is good to show the uniqueness. My problem is I usually dig in, then realize, I should have taken a picture. I just get excited and dig in there! Then take a pic of a half-eaten plate
I'll catch my dad snapping pics of food and I'm just like WHY. He doesn't have social media and he deletes all of his photos in fear of it taking up too much space on his iPhone. I guess the excitement of the moment just hits him differently than it does me.
That's funny that he deletes them later. I need to do some phone cleaning soon! Maybe he has a secret stash in Google Drive or Google Pics 🤣
It’s annoying sometimes bc I’ll be like hey show me that old pic… and he’s like I don’t have it anymore. WHY!!! 🤣
He’s not technologically advanced to even understand what cloud storage is. He’s an iPhone wizard at this point, but that’s the extent of it. Real good with the photo disappearing act.
Surely, you have an awesome family and I must confess you are truly one of the lucky ones.
I love the fact that you had fun in Lancaster and you shared every tiny bit of this trip as you could with us.
I would have loved to try almost every dish too if I had an opportunity to visit the Amish community. And would definitely revisit for the experience later on just like you if I lived close.
I am glad you had fun. Congratulations once again to your brother. 🎉🎉
I am indeed very lucky.
I look forward to going back to an Amish buffet in the future. It was so delicious and fairly priced too.
Thank you for the kind words 🤗
Yes, I agree 😍🥰
I hope you'll share the experience with us again 😃
I like that!
My pleasure ❣️
I heard about Amish in some movies and TV show in some way I envy their lifestyle by the way I bet Anish women are really good coook 🤩
Might be that you ate too much... But the next day you were for a fact thinking about that delicious food and how you should have eaten just a little more 😂😂
I'm thinking about the food right now actually. Would love to get into another sugar coma right about now 😆
It's NOT a buffet.. it's a SMOGASBORD!! 😁
😎👊
I played the rabbi's son in Fiddler on the roof. wait, is that Amish??
Modern technology has eased our ways of living. I can't live without mobile phone, internet etc. Without car , automobiles how peoples can travel. We should appreciate those who live there.
I'm with you. I don't want to make life any more difficult than it already is. The Amish however, they are more than happy to work much harder than the average citizen.
That's really interesting. Didn't know there were Amish Smörgåsbord around lol. Kinda curious what the food actually looked like now haha. Seems like you had a great time with family! It's always difficult not to eat too much at these things haha.
I didn’t take any photos of the food because I was way too busy eating.
Just imagine the most perfect looking home cooked meal. It was so clean and well organized. Never had to worry about anything being out. It was ideal.
Haha yeah I can see that happen easily in these kinda places. Sounds dope man!
Nothing like a good buffet... but too many of these and your gym routine needs to get an upgrade!😎
I wish we could feed with such organic and local foods lest cancer cases decrase.
It would be a much better world if our food was more natural and nutritional.
Nice to see that the people are still living in old ways. Such an honarable peoples and surving very good life 😇
It's rare to find in 2023, but it's definitely still happening.

There are many tribes in the world which are still living as they were centuries back. As long as we are happy and satisfied with our means, there is no need of so called rat race and technological advancements. Being happy is the main purpose we are seeking.
Tribal living is pretty amazing. I am willing to bet that depression is a lot more rare in those types of communities compared to something like modern city life.
There are people who are living in such places who don't know much about technology, they are living a much better and peaceful life than us, they don't have tension in their lives. Good to see you are having so much fun with your family.
Very nice, beautiful picture, greatings
