The gift of an artist / El regalo de una artista

The profiles of artists, writers and people related to culture in general was one of the things I did while working as a reporter and audiovisual producer for a news agency. Conducting interviews has always been something I enjoy in my profession (journalism) and this time I'll tell you a little about Palmira Correa, a Venezuelan artist I had the opportunity to meet.

Las semblanzas de artistas, escritores y personas relacionadas a la cultura en general fue una de las cosas que hice mientras trabajé como reportera y productora audiovisual para una agencia de noticias. Realizar entrevistas siempre ha sido algo que disfruto de mi profesión (el periodismo) y en esta ocasión les cuento un poco sobre Palmira Correa, una artista plástica venezolana que tuve la oportunidad de conocer.

She received us at her home (the cameraman and me) because there is also her workshop, "the workshop of dreams", as she calls it, full of materials such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, brushes, canvases and objects that she intervenes with her art such as wood, stones, cardboard, boxes, bottles, among others.

Nos recibió en su casa (al camarógrafo y a mí) porque allí está también su taller, “el taller de los sueños”, como ella lo llama, lleno de materiales como óleo, acrílico, acuarela, témpera, pinceles, lienzos y objetos que interviene con su arte como madera, piedras, cartón, cajas, botellas, entre otros.

We spent about two hours there conducting the interview and at the end she had the beautiful gesture of giving me one of her works, a painted glass bottle which is the one I show you in this post. As you can see her style is colorful and her work always highlights the human side.

Estuvimos unas dos horas allí realizando la entrevista y al finalizar ella tuvo el hermoso gesto de regalarme una de sus obras, una botella de vidrio pintada que es la que les muestro en esta publicación. Como verán su estilo es colorido y en su obra siempre resalta la parte humana.

In her creations we can see the folkloric traditions of the country, the historical, religious and also the daily life, what surrounds her. She has achieved her own style, so it is easy to recognize her work: voluminous people, round faces, eyes in the shape of triangles or squares and vivid and contrasting colors.

En sus creaciones podemos ver las tradiciones folklóricas del país, la parte histórica, religiosa y también la cotidianidad, lo que la rodea. Ha logrado un estilo propio, por lo que es fácil reconocer su obra: personas voluminosas, caras redondas, ojos en forma de triángulo o cuadrados y colores vivos y contrastantes.

Born in 1948 in Cumaná, in eastern Venezuela, since she was a child she has had a hand and foot disability that made things a little difficult for her, but didn't limit her desire to be an artist, even though some people told her that this "was for the rich". When she moved to Caracas in her youth, she took drawing and painting courses at the Ministry of Education and there she began her path in the world of plastic arts, in which she has been working for almost 40 years.

Nacida en 1948 en Cumaná, al oriente de Venezuela, desde niña ha tenido una discapacidad en manos y pies que le dificultó un poco las cosas pero no la limitó en su deseo de ser artista, aún cuando algunas personas le decían que eso “era para ricos”. Al mudarse a Caracas en su juventud, realizó cursos de dibujo y pintura en el Ministerio de Educación y allí comenzó su camino en el mundo de las artes plásticas, en el que ya lleva casi 40 años.

She has won awards and has exhibited individually and collectively inside and outside the country. This year she was also the first popular or naïf artist to participate in the 59th International Art Biennial in Venice, Italy.

Ha ganado premios y ha expuesto de forma individual y colectiva dentro y fuera del país. Este año además fue la primera artista popular o naif en participar en la 59ª Bienal Internacional de Arte de Venecia, en Italia.
