MUSICAL REGIONS OF VENEZUELA

Greetings to the entire Hive community!!! Over here writes @afroadrianv bringing you today exclusive content of the music in Venezuela, rooted to the experiences and the day to day, have spread throughout the country, mixing their different cultures.

Venezuela, can be divided into eight musical regions of its territory, which by their cultural content, each produces music with marked differences to the other regions. The country is so vast that it is made up of a surprising geographic diversity. We have extensive plains, a mountainous area of snow-capped peaks such as the Andes. Virgin impenetrable jungles in Guayaba, a long coastline of beautiful beaches, islands, a huge river with its mighty delta, giant lakes, complex cities and even a desert in Los Medanos de Coro.

The differences in the natural physical environment, together with the different mixtures of cultures that each region contains, developed a map of great musical variety in our country divided by zones rather than by states.

The last region, constituted by the medium to large urban areas, denotes the music generated in the cities. The urban region is found within the other regions and has different and special cultural characteristics that exist only in different and special that exist only in the cities. Let's get to know the cities a little bit. Let's get to know a little bit about the music that lives and sounds in these regions, keeping in mind that one holiday, Christmas remains present.

Central Region

This region contains a great diversity of cultural and musical manifestations. The African presence is very accentuated, especially in its coasts and in the Mirandina area, (Barlovento). From these places come Christmas parrandas and fulías, wake tones in the May cross, the dancing devils of Corpus Christi, toques and cumaco drum dances, pipas, quichimba, mina and redondos in San Juan: In carnival the theater dance "Canto para matar a la culebra" or Sambarambulé and the burial of the Sardine. In this area the carángano de Bambú, the first monochord of Venezuela, is performed. The state of Miranda is especially rich and varied with manifestations such as the San Pedro de Guarenas and Guatire.

In the big cities such as Caracas, Maracay and Valencia, traditional dance music such as merengue has given way to more culturally diverse music such as salsa, rock and reggae. In the neighborhoods of Caracas, a new mix of cultures and music is being developed with a strong Afro-Caribbean presence. Venezuela is internationally known for the musicians dedicated to these genres. By contrast, in the valleys of Aragua and Miranda, one of the most valuable Venezuelan musical items is found: the central Joropo with its harp of metal strings, and less known, the Tuyera guitar. Together with the maraquero and the singer they enrich the endless dances also called joropos with golpe tuyero and Aragüeños passages.

Central western region.

The state of Lara, especially Barquisimento, has always been called the "Musical Capital of Venezuela" where the children singing are all born musicians. This region, with its variety of different styles of stringed instruments and cuatros, brings us the joy of the Golpe Larense.

In the festivities of the patron saint San Antonio in June, you can hear and dance in all the villages in a set of tamunangue pieces, as well as salves, décimas and wake tones. For the day of the innocents, it is celebrated in Lara with parades through the streets of the Zaragozas. To celebrate the corn harvest, this region celebrates the dance of the turas of indigenous origin with the tuyas flutes of indigenous origin with the turas flutes and the cachos de Venado. In spite of the little African influence in this region, we also find Cumaco beats in Yaracuy for the festivities of San Juan and in Falcón, the Veleño drum with influence from the nearby Dutch Islands.

Guayana Region:

The Bandola Guayanesa is typical of the State of Bolivar. In the Carnivals of Ciudad Bolivar the Paloteo is celebrated and there is also the Mare mare con Carrizos at Christmas. Guayana is the great mining area of Venezuela, with dense tropical jungle and unexplored areas. By mining contact with the neighboring country Trinidad, it received the English-speaking influence and a Caribbean rhythm, the Calypso. In Callao, as in the rest of the country, carnivals are celebrated.

Andes Region:

The Andes High Mountains area surrounds its inhabitants with a cold and serene climate. The dances are accompanied by Aguinaldos, bambucos, waltzes, passages, and merengues in varied ensembles of violin, voice, cuatro guitar, tiple and maracas. Among many traditional festivities, the most important are the Shepherds, the descent of the Three Kings, the "paradura del Niño" and the "Espuntón", after December and the "Vasallos" or "danceros" and the "Candelaria" in February. San Isidro is celebrated with the Bueyes Adorned with flowers in Trujillo and San Benito, with the beating of the Tambores Chimbangueles for the procession of the Saint. The only stringed instrument existing in Venezuela before the arrival of the Spaniards, the single-stringed Carángano, is played in the Parrandas de Carángano in Trujillo.

Los Llanos region

the Llanero is accompanied in his works with the Cattle, singing Songs of arreoy of milking, free and inspired. In their dances or joropos, the strong harp or bandola Llanera is played together with the cuatro and the maracas, so that the singer shoots his voice high, in couplets and counterpoint of woven verses. With passages, hits and corridos.

In the northwestern part of Guárico, there is a unique tradition of Aerophones coming from the Kari'ña Indians: The carrizo of San josé de Guaribe, together with the cuatro, maracas and the drum, perform hits for family dances. Nearby, in Altagracia de Orituco the Baile de los Pintaos is celebrated on Mary's Day. In Apure, the indigenous community, pumé, keeps chants in trance during the whole night, in honor to the goddess-mother kumá, where the woman has an important participation.

Northeastern Region

This region of the country maintains a Spanish essence in its music, due to the chordophone instruments used such as the Bandolín, cuatro and guitar. They also use the voice, the marks and the cuereta or accordion. Spanish is also the song of the galerón for the Cruz de Mayo wakes, along with the Velorio point and the Fulía Oriental. At dances and social gatherings we hear the Joropo Oriental, golpes and a formal variation typical of the Oriente, the Estribillo. In Carnival and Christmas, the Popular manifestations take the streets with the comparsas or entertainments. For these popular festivities, theatrical parodies of everyday life and costumed representations abound, as well as theatrical parodies of animals. From here come our well-known Chiriguare, the Pájaro Guarandol and the Burriquita, El Baile del Mono de Caicara.

Zulia Region.

Zulia is a musically interesting region, because of the confluence of different cultures in the same place. It is constituted on the one hand of the Wayúu and Yukpa indigenous communities, a strong Afro-Venezuelan presence and on the other hand, of an oil industrialized city with foreign visitors, the proximity of Dutch islands and the constant Colombian migration. Developed from the traditional gaitas such as the gaita perijanera, the gaita de Furro. The gaita de Tambora, gaita de tambora, gaita de tambor largo. The Gaita Zuliana has spread to a national and commercial level of great deployment throughout the country especially at Christmas time. The formation of Pipe Ensembles in the schools is a rigorous tradition starting in August, in preparation for the end of the year competitions. For the feast of St. Benedict, burst the blows of the seven chimbangueles drums of African descent, especially in Gibraltar and Bobures.

Urban Region.

Because of its multicultural condition, the urban region or areas of medium to large cities, have a varied musical activity. The habits of city life radically change the functions of the musical culture known to their suitors by the region where the city is located. A great part of the inhabitants of the cities come from other regions and the music that they bring with them from their original traditions is also deformed or forgotten. Only in city neighborhoods, where contact between people is more direct, is communal musical activity generated.

Music consumption is interposed to customs and musical activity is located in theaters, concert halls, plazas and mixed venues, such as restaurants and bars. Most music listening is done indirectly through the media. Foreign music and instrumentation is made up of guitar, electric bass, percussion, MIDI, computers, among others? These are elements that coexist with any public musical performance in the cities. Recent foreign musical cultures have become a deeply rooted custom in urban life. Such as salsa, bolero, samba, reggaeton, rap, pop and jazz music. Its belonging within our Venezuelan culture is based on the strength of expression of these cultures that our country has managed to adapt.
