Insects are characterised by to have a life cycle that goes through successive stages that take them from the egg stage to the adult stage over a given period of time, there being a possibility that the eggs may hatch into voracious larvae (holometabolous insects), or simply, into nymphs (hemimetabolous insects), which are unfinished miniatures of the adults.

Many specimens, such as Florida predatory bedbugs, do not form larvae but nymphs from eggs, characterized by their striking colors (blue, red, yellow, black and green) and their physical ability to predate on other insects, especially larvae and adults, which are important pests causing considerable damage to agriculture.

2.jpgNymphs and adults of the genus Euthyrhynchus, very colourful.

3.jpgThese insects are not herbivores but predators of other insects.

At the taxonomic level these specimens belong to the Eukaryotic Domain, Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Arthropoda, Class Insecta, Order Hemiptera, Family Pentatomidae, Genus Euthyrhynchus, Probable Species Euthyrhynchus floridanus, noting that these insects use their sucking beak to penetrate the body of their prey and suck out their vital fluids.

5.jpgNymphs and adults of different sexes.

Florida predatory bedbugs, Family Pentatomidae, exhibit sexual dimorphism, with the male (12 mm) being smaller than the female (17 mm), but in general, the background colour is usually bluish black or purplish brown, characterised by the nymphs tending to stay in large groups, including for feeding.

7.jpgAn adult and a nymph of the genus Euthyrhynchus.
The nymph has not yet completed the development of its wings.

On a recent visit made to the El Toro sector of the Usera hamlet, I was able to see a group of about 12 bedbugs, in different stages of development highlighting the attractiveness of the nymphs, almost fully developed (they go through 5 stages of development), contrasting with the adults, perched on a leaf of a leguminous plant that grows as a wild bush.

8.jpgNymphs and adults of the Florida predatory bedbug, huddled on the leaves of a leguminous plant.

9.jpgIn the foreground, nymphs of the genus Euthyrhynchus, with beautiful bright colours.

I could not find the eggs of these insects and the pupal stage is non-existent, being replaced by the last nymphal stage.

10.jpgConsidering the development of the nymphs of these insects of the Order Hemiptera, the eggs probably hatched several days ago.

The site of the sighting is a natural area located in the xerophytic scrubland biome in the north of Lara State, Venezuela, at an altitude of 606 m above sea level, with an average temperature of 26° Celsius and abundant humidity, which has allowed a diverse vegetation cover, including leguminous, such as the quinchonchilla, a plant where these predators of other insects have been found.

11.jpgThe group behaviour of these insects of the genus Euthyrhynchus may be for defensive purposes.

The geographical coordinates of the site of the sighting are: 10.419178,-69.422625.

12a (3).jpgIn the background, you can see part of the land that constitutes the xerophytic forest of the El Toro sector.

Most people think in the insects and imagine harmful things, but this is not really the case, as in addition to providing us with the beneficial action of pollination, many insects such as the predatory bedbugs of the genus Euthyrhynchus, contribute to the biological control of harmful species.

13.jpgSpecimens of the genus Euthyrhynchus tend to stay together on plant tissue, even feeding together on the same prey.

14.jpgNymphs change shape and colour as they approach the adult stage.
