Robert se sintió agobiado por todo lo que acababa de saber, sólo entonces pudo asimilar el panorama completo que frente a él se desplegaba, lo que antes le pareció una pesadilla, tomaba ahora aterradores tintes de realidad.

―Entonces, ¿estoy solo? ―preguntó de forma inesperada y carente de contexto.

―No le entiendo ―respondió OLIMPIA.

―No hay nadie más, mi familia se ha ido, mis amigos, mi mundo ―dijo, como si hubiese estado en medio de una ensoñación.

―Así es señor Robert, usted es el único humano aquí ―dijo OLIMPIA.

―Y, ¿qué ha pasado con todos los demás?, ¿Dónde están todos los que vinieron desde Titán? ―preguntó.

―Todos han fallecido, usted es el último ser humano con vida―respondió la androide.

―No puede ser y los que vivían en las estaciones espaciales en órbita de Titán, Jápeto y Encelado, debe haber alguien más ―dijo desconsolado

―Todos ellos fueron desalojado y sus descendientes estaban a bordo de la Elpis ―dijo OLIMPIA ―. Por favor sígame, quiero que vea algo.

Después de decir esto, OLIMPIA condujo a Robert a través de los pasillo del segundo anillo, hasta el núcleo central de éste, donde en ingravidez se sujetaron a una cadena de anillos que los arrastró por el interior del eje central de la nave, vieron pasar la entrada del primer anillo y minutos después, lo que antes era un extenso tubo de paredes metálicas, se abrió ante ellos, encontrándose colgados de la cadena de anillos en medio de un gigantesco espacio abierto, como si fuesen arrastrados a través del cielo.

Robert vio hacia arriba y pudo observar como parques edificios y avenidas se movían sobre su cabeza, adheridos boca abajo a lo que para él era un distante techo, asombrado por esto, miró a su alrededor y en medio de las nubes que le rodeaban, pudo ver como todo era una gigantesca ciudad que parecía girar lentamente en torno a él, por un momento sintió que se desvanecería, abrumado por lo que estaba viendo.

―¿Qué demonios es esto? ―preguntó jadeante.

―Es el área residencial de Elpis, adelante están los radios centrales, ahí dejaremos la banda transportadora, sujétese de mí, no se preocupe por soltarse, no va a caer, la inercia lo mantendrá siguiendo el movimiento de la banda ―dijo OLIMPIA.

Tal como le indicó OLIMPIA, Robert se soltó del anillo y su cuerpo permaneció flotando siguiendo el mismo movimiento que llevaba, sólo inclinándose un poco adelante tras impulsarse muy levemente al soltarse, rápidamente se sujetó abrazando a la androide por debajo del brazo, con el que se sujetaba del anillo a la altura de su pecho.

―Sujétese de mi mano ―dijo OLIMPIA, levantando su mano libre.

Robert sujetó la mano de la androide con las suyas y pareció como si avanzara colgando de ella. Al entrar al eje de los radios centrales, Olimpia se soltó del anillo, impulsándose hacia un costado.

―Sujétese con fuerza ―dijo, para luego aferrarse con su mano suelta a una barra de sujeción, anclada a la pared interior de la estructura, golpeándose levemente ambos contra la pared. Se sujetaron de una escalera que estaba adosada al túnel del radio y que conducía a la ciudad y empezaron a ascender por ella.

A diferencia de cuando habían subido por el túnel que conducía al eje del anillo y la perdida de la gravedad les facilitó avanzar cuando se aproximaban al centro, aquí mientras más avanzaban y se empezaba a sentir los efectos de la gravedad, empezaron a tener la sensación de ir descendiendo de cabeza por la escalera, fue entonces cuando debieron, con dificultad, girar sus cuerpos para empezar a descender con los pies por delante.

Ya en la base del radio, empezaron a recorrer lentamente las desoladas, pero cuidadas calles de la ciudad, hasta llegar a una gigantesca y despejada planicie cubierta concreto, donde delgadas líneas de adoquines dividían el espacio, como si fuese una cuadrícula.

―¿Qué es esto?, parece un aparcamiento ―dijo Robert.

―Véalo usted mismo ―respondió OLIMPIA.

Robert paso del pasto, que rodeaba aquella planicie y caminó unos metros en su interior, observando el suelo. Pudo ver que cada cuadro de la retícula tenía una superficie de aproximadamente un metro y medio de ancho por dos y medio de largo, fue entonces cuando se percató de que cada uno tenía una placa metálica en una de sus esquinas, se agacho sobre una de ellas y pudo leer “Simón La Fontaine, Año Elpis 345-408”.

―¿Esto es un cementerio? ―preguntó sorprendido.

―La Elpis es ahora un gran cementerio ―respondió OLIMPIA.

The Only Journey of Elpis

Alone

Robert was overwhelmed by everything he had just learned, and only then could he take in the whole picture that was unfolding before him, what once seemed like a nightmare now took on frightening overtones of reality.

-So am I alone - he asked unexpectedly and without context.

-I don't understand - replied OLYMPIA.

-There is no one else, my family is gone, my friends, my world, -he said, as if in a dream.

-That's right, Mr. Robert, you are the only human here -said OLYMPIA.

-And what happened to all the others, where are all the people who came from Titan?

-All have died, you are the last human alive, -responded the android.

-It can't be, and those who lived on the space stations orbiting Titan, Jupiter and Enceladus, there must be someone else, -he said disconsolately

-They were all evicted and their descendants were on board the Elpis, -said OLYMPIA-. Please follow me, I want you to see something.

After saying this, OLYMPIA led Robert through the corridors of the second ring, to the central core of the ring, where in weightlessness they clung to a chain of rings which dragged them along the central axis of the ship, saw the entrance to the first ring pass, and minutes later what was once a long tube of metal walls opened up before them, finding themselves hanging from the chain of rings in the middle of a gigantic open space, as if being dragged through the sky.

Robert looked up and could see buildings and avenues moving above his head, clinging upside down to what for him was a distant roof, amazed by this, he looked around and in the midst of the clouds around him, he could see how everything was a gigantic city that seemed to slowly revolve around him, for a moment he felt that it would fade away, overwhelmed by what he was seeing.

-What the hell is this? -he asked breathlessly.

-It' s the residential area of Elpis, ahead are the central spokes, we' ll leave the conveyor belt there, hold on to me, don' t worry about letting go, you' re not going to fall, the inertia will keep you following the movement of the belt, -said OLYMPIA.

As OLYMPIA pointed out, Robert let go of the ring and his body floated along following the same movement he was wearing, just leaning forward a little after pushing himself very slightly as he let go, quickly holding on to the android under her arm, holding on to the ring at chest level.

-Hold on to my hand, -said OLYMPIA, raising her free hand.

Robert held the android's hand with his own and it seemed as if he was hanging on to it. As she entered the central radius axis OLYMPIA let go of the ring, pushing herself to the side.

-Hold on tight, - she said, then with her loose hand she clung to a retaining bar, anchored to the inner wall of the structure, both banging lightly against the wall. They grabbed hold of a ladder which was attached to the radius tunnel leading to the city and started to climb up.

Unlike when they had climbed up the tunnel leading to the ring axis and the loss of gravity made it easier for them to move forward as they approached the centre, here the more they moved forward and began to feel the effects of gravity, they began to have the sensation of descending headlong down the ladder, it was then that they had to, with difficulty, turn their bodies to begin descending feet first.

At the base of the radius, they began to slowly wander through the desolate but well-tended streets of the city, until they reached a gigantic and clear concrete-covered plain, where thin lines of cobblestones divided the space, as if it were a grid.

-What is this, it looks like a car park, -said Robert.

-See for yourself, - answered OLYMPIA.

Robert walked past the grass that surrounded the plain, and walked a few yards inside, looking at the ground. He could see that each square of the grid was approximately one and a half meters wide by two and a half meters long, and it was then that he noticed that each one had a metal plate in one of its corners, he bent over one of them and was able to read "Simon La Fontaine, Year Elpis 345-408".

-Is this a cemetery? -he asked in surprise.

-The Elpis is now a big cemetery, - answered OLYMPIA.
