Next we continue the tour were we left off. Today I'll explore the various bedroom and other curious interior rooms within the mansion.

Master Bedroom

Lavish for the era, a large king sized bed, piano, chairs, a washing station and wardrobe, and plenty of room for extra furniture.

An amazing fan is preserved behind glass. The handle might be made of mother of pearl.

Window Room and Study

For those who want a nice guest room to enjoy an escape nestled high above within the trees, this is the place to be. Best place to be for as much fresh air and privacy as you need.

A nearby study area allows easy access to make calls on the telephone, while also reading and writing letters.

In the age before the internet, this was a state-of-the-art communication station.

A Modest Bathroom

img_20210515_112905161.jpg

Can you imagine living living in a time and place where hot water is a luxury? To have it pre-heated with a furnace to service all the bath, laundry, and kitchen rooms was something reserved only for the upper crust elites who could afford it.

The shower system looks ancient to me. However, some of the other bathroom fixtures, I am not so certain they are original. The building has been updated slightly, but only when when necessary.

The Lady of the House

img_20210515_113112777.jpg

Fantastically lifelike. This portrait quality painting has goldwork to match the brilliance of her engaging personality and sense of style.

Her interest in cultivating various breeds of flowers in her gardens made her a pioneer in the garden circles. Her leadership led to the creation of the Portland Rose Society.

When you visit the Rose Gardens in Portland, you can thank Mrs. Pittock for that.

The Rose is the symbol of Portland, largely due to her passion and zeal for wanting to see this flower flourish all over the city.

Balcony and windows.

Plenty of space to walk around the balcony. Many of the bedrooms have access to this adjoining balcony area. A great place to socialize and get some fresh air.

Master Bathroom Suite

img_20210515_113947551_hdr.jpg

Yes, this the bathroom designed for the master of the house.

Windows, a shower room, pedestal sink, commode, bath, and uh... uh, you'll have to use your own imagination to guess how this other apparatus might be been used.

Sewing Room

img_20210515_114326556.jpg

This was actually my favorite room in the entire house. Warm, high up, bright, and cozy.

This room felt the most alive to me with the views of the people not far off on the path by the house. Within shouting distance, I'd say.

Yet stocked with sitting areas and tea and alcohol in every corner. Personally, I love these types of couches with the stretched, striped upholstery and the dark wood feet and arms.

The warm tones of the floor, the red wine chairs, and the lattice wallpaper all add to the charm. The golden mirror is a portal for the imagination that might transport one to the realm of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night Dream.

A women's sewing circle would certainly enjoy themselves in a room like this on night's when the men of the house are down in the basement smoking cigars and gambling. What sort of gossip and stories might have occurred between the older ladies in this very room, I wonder.

Basement Room

Now, kept as a museum area with photos and news articles detailing the storms and floods that wiped out half the city when the Pittock family was living in the mansion.

Originally this was a meeting area for men to smoke cigars, play cards, and talk business. As owner of the Oregonian newspaper, Mr. Pittock would have used this area frequently to host meetings with other businessmen.

Even the gardener has their own house here on the property.

Laundry Facilities

img_20210515_120542618.jpg

Very spacious, the laundry room also served as storage areas likely. Here the fabric for rugs, curtains, blankets, and clothing could all be steamed and dried.

End of Part 2...

This concludes the tour of the interior of the Pittock Mansion.

In the final third part in this serious, we'll take a stroll outside to enjoy the garden areas. In May, all of the rhododendrons were in bloom along with many other flowers. You won't want to miss out, so stay tuned!

Loving the tour!!! Love that green wall paper in the bedroom and the prints. Where did they get there money from? It'd be awesome having the job of the gardener/groundsman with supplied house. Quite a good job I re
