Curator Cat Considers Tags: Are the #Hiveexclusive and #oc Tags Even a "Thing?"

in GEMS3 years ago

Greetings Felines and Hoomans of Hivelandia!

As I consider ways to ramp up my community participation here — aside from the obvious "curate and comment" — I have been thinking about tagging habits, and the tags we use.

All my Content is "Unique."

Which basically means I do not cross-post between here and other social media platforms. And I don't nab my own content from Facebook and Instagram and "recycle" it on Hive.

Now, I'm not writing these words to criticize anyone who does do that... but I'm considering some "tagging practices."

I generally try to make room for the tag #hiveexclusive in my posts, but I have been increasingly wondering whether that's even a "thing" in this community, anymore?

I also remember there was an #oc tag (for "original content") at some point, but I'm not entirely sure whether that was just being used on twitter, or here on Hive, as well.

The Purpose of Tagging

From my perspective — and I have been part of social media for a long time — the entire purpose of tags is to:

(A) Tell people something about the content of your post.

(B) Help with the "Content Discovery" process on a social site.

I realize that here in Hive, some people like to just tag their post with a long string of "Layer Two Community" token tags, in the hope of scoring a few extra coins... but seriously, folks, "tag spam" doesn't really help anyone, including yourself.

Tagging three or four (tops!) relevant communities should amply get you your few extra cents... and most posts here are not appropriate for more than a short handful of communities, anyway!

Anyway, I've just been trying understand the relative value and importance of #hiveexclusive and #oc and whether or not it is even meaningful for me to continue using them.

Thanks for stopping by, and do leave me a comment!

Love Cats? Get Involved in Hive's Cat Communties!

If you're a cat lover and often/sometimes post pictures or other content that includes your feline friends, why not become an active part of Hive's growing Cat Communities?

These are some of the more active Cat Communities — why not join them ALL? Remember, you can also "cross-post" your cat posts to them!

HiveCats by @curatorcat is a central "gathering place" for cat content on Hive; promoting the use of the #hivecats tag for feline content!

Cat Snaps by @manorvillemike is a place to post pictures of your cats when you don't have a whole lot to say beyond just sharing your cute photos!

Caturday Community by @saboin is a community where we get to celebrate posts relating to Saturday — aka "Caturday" — our own special day!

Cat Photos by @andrarchy is a "mixed use" cat content community; posts can be just photos or longer, as long as the subject is CATS! It has a lot of subscribers but is not very active.

Cats by @captainklaus (and Sissi!) is another "general" cat content community; it's there, but not very active.

Last, but certainly not least, a special shoutout to the recently formed Hive Pets Community which has become quite active and has quite a bit of cat content!

There are a number of other feline communities listed on Hive, but I am not sharing them for now as they have not had any activity (by their Admins OR users) since the Steem/Hive fork. Updates as they become available!

I think that if these tags are "not a thing", they should be.

I'm more inclined to follow and vote for posts that are tailored to each specific platform rather than having the exact same post just copy/pasted between a bunch of different sites.

I like that you make your content exclusive to each platform.

Just seems to me that it's important to highlight was is original and created specifically for Hive. I know a lot of people like to just take the easy way out and scatter the same content across all social media... I'm just not into it!
