On the outskirts of the city and its teeming atmosphere, to the south-west of the main parks, lies the incredible Whispering Stones Park. This large park with its wide alleys connects the city centre with its suburbs and leads you to the Memorial of Silence. This is another invitation to a pedestrian and meditative journey offered by this magnificent city. If you decide to wander through this park, be patient, it extends over several kilometres and will take you on a unique sonic journey, where numerous mineral structures have been dug out and sculpted into curved shapes giving them unprecedented acoustic characteristics. I saw children having fun throwing small pebbles at blooming bulbous shapes which caused small echoes that reverberated by domino effect in a singular shimmering of sounds that made one think that a light rain had fallen there.

Other, larger structures, which from a distance seem to take the shape of a gigantic crab and from up close resemble immense courtyards, also turn out to be vast alcoves where the slightest noise is adorned with a surprising reverberation worthy of the ancient amphitheatres. Apart from the local choral groups and the children who often delight in these places, most citizens go there in silence, to appreciate the crazy melodies that a gentle zephyr or a bird can provoke as it rushes into these bizarre cathedrals.

I can only advise you to go there on a nice day, enjoying a picnic and a nice walk to the Silence Memorial.

The Silence Memorial

The Memorial of Silence is the last stone dome on the top of the Whispering Stones Park. Amazingly, once you enter this memorial, all sound is absorbed into a silence so perfect that you would think you were deaf. And for good reason, this magnificent cathedral with its curved vaults is entirely dedicated to the memory of Beethoven. His soul seems to hover in this place of synaesthetic meditation. Followers of the Songbird Cult are said to go there once a year to celebrate what they call a lysergic variation. This seems to be an event where members of the cult drink a secret potion that they consume while contemplating the master's scores that litter the dome. It is said that the sacred drink transforms their reading into vast sonic hallucinations that take them into several hours of daze and psychedelic contemplation.
