Comisión #2 - Una pequeña mordida / Commission #2 - A little bite

in GEMS4 years ago (edited)

Hello community of artists and readers; you can come without fear, she doesn't bite... sometimes. I come today with a commission made for a book cover. I'll do my best to summarize the process; I don't want my blood to appear there although I feel it when I see it.

I know very well that the image above would be a very strange request for an illustration... although very striking, and that was the idea. This commission would be part of the cover of an e-book, if you want to see it here is the link

By itself it would tell a story, while painting it I couldn't stop thinking about scenario after scenario where this idea would fit.

Proceso/Process:

Before we start, let's make a deal, I'll try to be as short as possible: if I make it, give me an upvote and if I don't make it, too... This was my first time as a freelancer and it took me almost a week to do it, please be patient.

The sketches received several changes from the hair, to the tone of the blood, the distance and some of the shading. Luckily I was told the corrections in time so I was happy to make the changes as I watched it take shape.

The hardest thing to do was the shadows between the cheeks and the mouth. The effect I was looking for, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get it...

In the end I gave up and went into the hair, at least this way I hoped to be able to rest the sight of that area for a while.

Artist's recommendation: I always recommend working with the darkest shade possible and gradually adding lighter strokes in the case of hair. It makes things much easier and gives more control.

... huge jump on the way, we went from cut floating head to blurred floating head; basically what I did was to darken the paint itself, add texture with "multiply" and blurring the background, all with soft brushes.

Once you're done with all the gray work the fun part of adding color begins, people may think it's a little difficult but it's just adding a layer with the "color" filter (that life saver at the end of the Photoshop filter list) and bringing it to life with the use of "overlay" or the color wheel.

Excellent work on this dark piece, @edanya! 😁

Is it really cool seeing your art on the cover of a book? :D it's a very eye catching image, people are probably picking it up/clicking on it just from that XD

You're the second person I've read now on here who's specifically said start with the darkest colours and go down to light. I've always started painting from shadow and then doing light but every time I did I always remembered an old art teacher from school (can't even remember which year it was) who always told us that we had to start with the lightest colours first and go to the darkest because it's easier to paint over the light colours if mistakes were made, but I'm now wondering if it's because we were using poster paints pretty much exclusively and they didn't want us to make a mess mixing paints and getting the paintbrushes too dirty.

Hehehe, thanks :3 💕

And depending, digital is king of different from traditional (as every traditional techniques needs a different approach) in some techniques is good to save the white spaces from the beginning (like in water color or crayons)once you lose them is hard to get them back. In digital is easier for me to go from dark to light, especially if it's hair since they have that king of depth and darkness after multiple strands of hair xd.

Excelente
