Yesterday was the day of the plastic artist in my country. It has been celebrated every May 10 for 37 years in commemoration of the birth of the Venezuelan painter Armando Réveron, a milestone in our culture that does not leave all of us who admire this man indifferent, who fully committed to a unique creation guided by his mythical vision.
On the Venezuelan coasts, in Macuto, Reverón made his home an art workshop, which he named El Castillete. And more than a workshop, it was a world of his own to which he was able to print his creative passion, his philosophy and plastic handling of the Caribbean light.

“As a 10-year-old boy, around 1942, I met Armando Reverón. The surprise was enormous, when I suddenly met a real "cave man". Although he still did not have a beard or long hair, his semi-nudity and his way of life reminded me of Robinson Crusoe, and those adventures of Emilio Salgari that shaped our wonderful dreams so much. The primitivism of the stone castle immersed in that jungle of vegetation and loose animals, free, naturally, caught me immediately ”.
This is a story by Eyidio Moscoso, who was a writer and artist who knew Armando Reverón in a very special way, when his mother bought a little house right in front of the Castillete. Eyidio related about meeting Reverón: "from that moment I understood that my life would not be the same, because Reverón awakened in me all that poetic artistic world that slept in and every one of my genes." What a beautiful coincidence!
I made this collage of Reverón from a photograph with his classic pumpá hat. In his head Juanita Ríos, a special life partner, portrayed in many of his works. I ventured out with a little animation game as well. There also appears the false surgeon who operates the madman in the painting by Bosco, Extraction of the stone of madness. Because yes, Reverón spent seasons in gray psychiatric institutions.
Eyidio Moscoso also wrote this story with which I end to enjoy and admire this inaccurate and powerful being, and as a nod to the new moon in Taurus that is positioned on May 11.
The Bull God
Perhaps the idea of the minotaur has something to do with the famous Bull God of Reverón.
Esotericism in Reverón was an intrinsic part of his personality. On many other occasions our character practiced rituals strange to our customs, such as hitting his muscles with "cosmic" stones, which he carried around his neck linked by a cord. This was apparently done for the purpose of strengthening and radiating cosmic force.
Also the rite of the fish in the stomach was a significant idea for some time in Reverón. The matter consisted of making guttural sounds, which according to their beliefs, were coco-coros fighting with the demons of evil to heal their body.
We do not have the exact date of when Reverón began with the famous practices and prayers in front of the Bull God. But we can affirm that it was from the year 1940 when he began to make the wire structure that would form the head of the Bull God, joined to the authentic bull horns that until 1940 were around, among his rare things.
The Bull God ritual consisted of standing half naked in front of the bullfighting figure. Then began a kind of prayer with incomprehensible phrases, combined with certain inclinations, as of gratitude. Then he lit a candle stub, which he inserted into the bull's head. Then he knelt down and said a long, semi-silent prayer with his arms crossed while the candle emitted its light that came out of the figure's eyes and nostrils.
These rites were performed at five o'clock in the afternoon, in exchange for Christian prayers in the Chapel of the Saints, which he routinely performed on a daily basis when he returned to his emotional and psychic balance.
It is difficult to move around the world of Reverón, seeing the two poles of his psyche, the normal and the pathological, without seeing himself in the need to judge it, remaining neutral, unalterable in the face of the two phases of his personality, in order to know him in a comprehensive way .
It is even more difficult for us to understand how Reverón could live with that double personality without the need to adjoin the outside world, beyond Juanita and him. And to be able to develop that creative genius thanks to which he will inherit the immense legacy of his extensive marvelous work, without any blemish.
Surely God knows what He does with His exceptional children.

Ayer fue el día del artista plástico y la artista plástica en mi país. Se celebra cada 10 de mayo desde hace 37 años en conmemoración del natalicio del pintor venezolano Armando Réveron, hito de nuestra cultura que no deja indiferente a quienes admiramos a este hombre que se comprometió a plenitud con una creación única guiada por su mítica visión.
En las costas venezolanas, en Macuto, Reverón hizo de su hogar un taller, al que bautizó como El Castillete. Y más que un taller, fue un mundo propio al que pudo imprimirle su pasión creadora, su filosofía y manejo plástico de la luz caribeña.
La Cueva (1920)
“Siendo un niño de 10 años, por allá por el año 1942, conocí a Armando Reverón. La sorpresa fue enorme, al encontrarme de repente con un auténtico “hombre de las cavernas”. Aunque aún no llevaba ni la barba ni el pelo largo, su semi-denudez y su forma de vida me hicieron recordar a Robinson Crusoe, y aquellas aventuras de Emilio Salgari que tanto nos forjaron nuestros sueños maravillosos. El primitivismo del Castillete de piedras inmerso en aquella jungla de vegetación y animales sueltos, libres, en forma natural, me atraparon de inmediato”.
Este es un relato de Eyidio Moscoso, quien fue un escritor y artista que conoció de forma muy especial al maestro Armando Reverón, cuando su madre compró una casita justo frente al Castillete. Eyidio relató sobre el hecho de conocer a Reverón: “desde ese momento comprendí que mi vida no sería la misma, pues Reverón despertó en mí todo ese mundo artístico poético que dormía en y cada uno de mis genes”. ¡Qué bella casualidad!.
Hice este collage de Reverón a partir de una fotografía con su clásico sombrero pumpá. En su cabeza Juanita Ríos, especial compañera de vida, retratada en muchas de sus obras. Me aventuré con un pequeño juego de animación también. Por ahí aparece el falso cirujano que opera al loco en la obra de El Bosco, Extracción de la piedra de la locura. Porque sí, Reverón pasó temporadas en grises instituciones psiquiátricas.
De Eyidio Moscoso es también este relato que dejo para disfrutar y admirar a este ser inexacto y poderoso, y como un guiño a la luna nueva en Tauro que se posiciona este 11 de mayo.
El Dios Toro
Quizás la idea del minotauro tenga algo que ver con el famoso Dios Toro de Reverón.
El esoterismo en Reverón era parte intrínseca de su personalidad. Ya otras muchas veces nuestro personaje practicó rituales extraños a nuestras costumbres, como el de golpearse la musculatura con piedras "cósmicas", que él cargaba colgadas a su cuello unidas por un cordón. Esto al parecer lo hacía con el propósito de fortalecerse y de irradiarse de fuerza cósmica.
También el rito de los peces en el estómago fue una idea significativa por algún tiempo en Reverón. El asunto consistía en efectuar unos sonidos guturales, que según sus creencias, eran unos coro-coros peleando con los demonios del mal para sanear su cuerpo.
No tenemos la fecha exacta de cuándo comenzó Reverón con las famosas prácticas y rezos frente al Dios Toro. Pero sí podemos afirmar que fue a partir del año 1940 cuando comenzó a realizar la estructura de alambre que formaría la cabeza del Dios Toro, unida a los cuernos de toro auténticos que hasta el 1940 estuvieron por ahí, entre sus cosas raras.
El ritual del Dios Toro consistía en pararse semidesnudo frente a la figura taurina. Entonces comenzaba una especie de rezo con frases incomprensibles, combinadas con ciertas inclinaciones, como de agradecimiento. Luego encendía un cabo de vela, que introducía dentro de la cabeza del toro. Entonces se rodillada y hacía un largo rezo semi silente con los brazos en cruz mientras la vela emitía su luz que salía por los ojos y por las fosas de nariz de la figura.
Esos ritos los efectuaba a las cinco de la tarde, a cambio de los rezos cristianos en la capilla de los santos, que realizaba cotidianamente de forma rutinaria cuando volvía a su equilibrio emocional y psíquico.
Resulta complicado desplazarse por el mundo de Reverón, viendo los dos polos de su psiquismo, el normal y el patológico, sin verse en la necesidad de juzgarlo, permaneciendo neutro, inalterable frente a las dos fases de su personalidad, para así conocerlo en forma integral.
Más difícil aún nos resulta comprender cómo podía Reverón convivir con esa doble personalidad sin necesidad de colindar con el mundo exterior, más allá de Juanita y de él. Y poder desarrollar esa genialidad creativa gracias a la cual nos heredara el inmenso legado de su extensa obra maravillosa, sin ninguna mácula.
Sin duda que Dios sabe lo que hace con sus hijos excepcionales.
