Chicks, Rooster, Friends visit - Friday

in GEMS4 years ago

First thing in the morning I had to go to town to drop off the co-op orders. I am now done with summer squash for the season, at least selling them. Anything I grow now will be for us or friends. I am still getting some daily but just not the larger numbers from a month ago.

The hen had her chicks out of the nest and moved them towards the coop. It took her most of the day to get them near enough that I could scoop them up and put them all in the coop for the night.

She ended up hatching out 6 chicks with 5 being amber white and one being a striped walnut. In the evening as we were wandering the farm with our friends I noticed only 5 white chicks with the hen so after looking around a bit I found the walnut laying on the ground. I picked it up and put it next to the hen. A little later as we were walking around I noticed it still in the place I put it so we grabbed it and hauled in the house to try and keep it alive. @stryeyz got some electrolytes into it and we put it in a box in the kitchen. It is still alive this morning so we will see what happens to it the next couple of days.

Pretty cool shot of a bumblebee on one of the Skyscraper sunflowers. The bees are loving them wit hall the masses of pollen. The other sunflowers were all littered with various types of bees.

She is in there somewhere. Our friend went hiking through the pole beans and was picking along the rows. I am not used to seeing others in the beans, my perspective is always looking out from them.

Our rooster sealed his fate. Our friend's littlest was toddling around the farm and went to try and pick up the rooster like their chickens at home and apparently he attacked her. We did not see it but that was all for him. He has been pretty aggressive and has full on been raping the ducks. Although some of the ducks stop for him, which is just silly. I am pretty sure he sees the little humans as being part of his flock since they are small and he gets all randy. He got stuffed into the little fenced pen for the night and he will be finding his way into the freezer this weekend. Not going to have an aggressive rooster on the farm. We have too many as it is, 3 Colombian Wyandotte and the 2 Rangers with soon to be in the freezer.

Our co-op order from Azure Standard arrived and I drove down to pick it up. It is a few miles closer to pick it up at the truck rather than at our drop point's house and I got to help unload the bunch of stuff into her car.

The boys ran themselves ragged with the kids and they were both ready for bed early. We didn't get any rain last night which sucks as we seriously need it and I would love to have all the trees rinsed off so everything doesn't have the grey tinge to it. The air is at least clearer now.

Today the beans need to be picked more, The Cornish need to have their pen changed in prep for the next batch of chicks, but I just looked and they won't arrive until October 1st, I was thinking it would be next week. (Phew, I have a bit longer.)

A larger task that is waiting is running the new electrical line to the studio which will be a bit of a bear. I will be burying 150 feet, running through 3 junctions, and having to run a cat 5 and path lighting line with it. It will allow for 220v at any of the outbuildings which will be super handy for the tool shed.

We got a trace of rain last night. I don't think it was near enough to do any good, but it was better than nothing.

There is supposed to be a another chance mid week, hopefully it will drop something. At least the air is cleared out now.

I hope the little chick will get better soon. They look really cute.

It lived through the night and has perked up a bit with fluids so at least it has a chance now.

Oh, that is wonderful to know.

Bummer about the little girl and that rooster. Rooster stew coming up!

Hope the little chick makes it...

So far it is alive but it has what seems to be splay leg. @stryeyz did a little splinting to see if it will help but it seems a bit to broken. We will see. We lost another one so are down to 4 under here now but they look pretty strong.
