Hello community! Today I want to introduce to you my other pet, a turtle, his name is Juanito. I received Juanito in a christmas gift exchanged at work that my friend Jhonny gave me. He died in 2014.
Se supone que debí dejarle el nombre que él le había puesto en la tarjeta, Yoa, pero yo, por diversión, decidí ponerle Juanito porque así le decía a Jhonny, a él le fastidiaba pero yo me valía de una razón lógica y cuando me recriminaba diciendo: “Yo me llamo Jhonny”, yo le respondía: “Pero Jhonny es Juanito en español”, y al final no le quedaba de otra que reírse y aceptarlo jajaja, fue tanto así que al poco tiempo muchos otros compañeros de trabajo lo empezaron a llamar Juanito.
I should have let him the name that my friend choose for him, Yoa, at least that was what Johnny supposed but just for fun I decided to name my turtle Juanito because that was how I called Jhonny. Since we met I started to call him that way, that bothered him but I had a logical reason and every time he told me: “My name is Jhonny” I answered “But Jhonny is Juanito in spanish”, so there was no option for him but to laugh and accepted it hahaha.

Ahora si, continuemos hablando de Juanito, la tortuga. Juanito es una Trachemys scripta elegans como dicta su nombre científico, también conocida como Galápago de Florida o tortuga de orejas rojas, aunque no tiene orejas pero le dicen así por las rayas rojas que tiene en ambos lados de la cabeza.
Well, let´s continue talking about Juanito, the turtle. Juanito´s scientific name is Trachemis scripta elegans, known as well like Galapago of Florida and Red ears turtle, although he doesn´t have ears but they call them this way because of the red lines that has on both sides of his head.
Me lo regalaron junto a una hermosa pecera redonda que en el centro traía piedras y una islita de plástico con palmeras y todo. En ese entonces, Juanito medía unos 5 centímetros. Puse la pecera en la biblioteca de mi cuarto para poder mirarlo cuando estuviese allí. En las mañanas, ponía la pecera al sol porque eso ayuda al crecimiento de las tortugas y porque como a cualquier reptil, le encanta llevar sol. En las noches lo sacaba y lo montaba junto a mí en la cama mientras miraba la tv.
The gift included a fishbowl with pebbles and a small plastic island with palm trees hehe. Juanito was around 5 cms (2 inches), pretty small. I put the fisbowl in my book case to look at him when I was there. In the mornings I used to put the fishbowl where the sun was, that help them to grow and also because as the reptile he is, they love being in the sun. At nights I liked to put him on the bed with me while I was watching tv.
Al poco tiempo vi que le gustaba mucho andar por ahí así que cuando me encontraba en casa, lo soltaba y el recorría todo el apartamento. Hubo veces que pasaban uno o dos días y no sabíamos donde estaba metido porque aún era muy pequeño y podía esconderse en los lugares más inaccesibles. Cada año le cambiaba su casa que ya no era pecera sino ponchera jajaja. Y ese es uno de los secretos para que estas tortugas crezcan en cautiverio, ir dándoles cada vez un espacio más amplio. A su vez, hay que limpiarles su hogar todos los días ya que les gusta comer y hacer sus necesidades en el agua por lo que hay que ser disciplinado con eso para mantenerlos sanos y bonitos.
I started to notice that he liked very much to go around the house, so when I was at home I let him on the floor and he went where he wanted haha. Many times we didn´t knew where he was and we were two or three days looking for him. He was very small so he always found the most inaccesible places to dissapear. Juanito was growing and each year his house was changing, so there wasn´t an aquarium anymore but a big plastic punch bowl haha. This is one of the secrets to help them grow in captivity, give them a big house. At the same time, it´s important to clean their home every day because they like to eat and go to the bathroom in the water so you must have discipline with that to keep them healthy and beautiful.
Hoy Juanito tiene 15 años y mide 20 centímetros y puedo decirles que nunca pensé que una tortuga pudiese llegar a atender a su nombre cuando la llaman, pero sí, él lo hace. Juanito es muy sociable, en las mañanas, me avisa que quiere salir ¿Qué cómo lo hace? Se para y trata de saltar de su ponchera, lo saco y se va corriendo al pasillo a esperar que se asome el sol, ahí se queda con sus patas estiradas absorbiendo los rayos del astro rey, luego camina por ahí, descansa y cuando son la 1 ó 2 de la tarde se va para el balcón a aprovechar nuevamente el sol aunque a veces se queda durmiendo en la alfombra de mi cuarto escuchando rock jeje, le encanta el rock. En la tarde, regresa a su acuático hogar a hidratarse, comer y dormir. No siempre es igual, hay semanas que quiere salir todos los días y otras que prefiere quedarse en su ponchera. Puede que Juanito no hable pero ha aprendido a comunicarse conmigo a su manera.
Now Juanito is 15 years old and 20 cms (8 inches) and I can say that I never thought that a turtle could come to you when you call her but yes, when I say his name he turns his head and comes to me. Juanito is very sociable, in the morning, when he wants to go out of his house, he lets me know, how? Trying to jump from his punch bowl, I put him on the floor and he goes quickly to the hall where the sun is and stays there with his legs stretched enjoying sun king´s rays. When he gets bored he starts to walk around or rests a while and when the sun goes to the other part of the house, I mean, the balcony, Juanito is already there waiting for a little bit more sun although some days he prefers to stay in my room over my carpet listening rock music, he loves rock hehe. In the evening is time to eat and hydrate so he returns to his house. Not always is the same, somedays he wants to go out and some others he prefers to stay in his punch bowl. Maybe Juanito doesn´t talk but he has found his own way to communicate with me.
Una de las cosas más curiosas y graciosas que hace es esconderse debajo de la alfombra de la sala y quedarse horas ahí, por lo que más de una vez nos hemos tropezado y casi caído por no verlo jajaja. Y en Diciembre, apenas ponemos el pesebre se mete ahí a dormir todos los días jejeje, le encanta.
One of the most curious and funny things that he does is when he hides under the living room´s big carpet and stays there for hours, making us stumble with him and nearly fall down many times because we didn´t noticed he was there hahaha. In December, when we put the christmas rack he gets in to sleep there every day hahaha, he loves to do that.
Aunque Juanito es un reptil, creo que se identifica con los gatos ya que siempre ha convivido con gatos, los persigue y hasta come comida de gatos.
Although Juanito is a reptile I think he feels close to cats because he has always live between them, he chases them and he even eats cat food.
Juanito es gracioso e inteligente y le gusta descansar en mi alfombra o sobre mis zapatos, muchas veces lo consigo durmiendo profundamente con la cabeza apoyada en el piso jejeje. Aparte de eso es todo un modelo y muy fotogénico. Me encantan sus ojos verdes y esa expresión en su cara que parece una sonrisa permanente. Por eso y muchas cosas más Juanito es una mascota muy particular.
Juanito is funny and smart, he likes to rest over my carpet or my shoes and frequently I find him with his head on the floor sleeping like a log hahaha. Besides all that, Juanito is a very photogenic model. I love his green eyes and that expression of a permanent smile in his face. For this and many other things Juanito is a very peculiar pet.
