Greetings community. Hope all of you doing well. Today I start to post a new section in my profile I´ll call The lyrics of Rock. Rock music is one of my passions.The idea to translate in spanish rock songs to share them between my friends by e-mail, started at the end of the 90´s with the intention to try to reveal and show them what´s behind each song, not just the meaning but also the story or anecdote involved and at the same time, see if I could convince some of my no rocker friends to come a little closer to this genre, at least for the lyrics. Generally in the countries of no english speaking, we use to listen english songs but because not everybody speaks english most of the people don´t pay much attention to go and find the meaning or what a song is about.
Para mí el Rock tiene una particular forma de expresar los diversos sentimientos humanos y se mueve a través de toda una amplia gama de temas como amor, diversión, miedo, tristeza, rabia, sociedad, introspección, drogas, creencias, sexo, fe, ideologías, imaginación, poesía, conflictos, protesta e inclusive nada en particular, entre otros. Aunque hay muchas maneras de interpretar la letra de una canción, y por lo general esta dependerá de la visión particular de quien haga esa interpretación, la mayoría de las veces se consiguen datos interesantes que aportan y ayudan a entender mejor esa letra, al artista y el por que la escribió.
For me, Rock music has a particular way to express the many human feelings and moves through a wide range of themes like love, fun, fear, sadness, anger, society, introspection, faith, drugs, ideology, sex, imagination, conflicts, poetry, belief, protest, etc, even nothing in particular. Although there are many ways to interpret the lyric of a song and obviously and generally will depend on the personal vision of who makes that interpretation, most of the times you can find interesting facts that will help you understand a little better that lyric, the artist and why he or she wrote it.
A partir de hoy, podrán conocer un poco más acerca del significado y la inspiración detrás de las letras de muchas canciones famosas y otras que no lo son tanto. En Las letras del Rock, intentaré entregarles todas las semanas un análisis diferente, divertido y entretenido basado en datos reales y aderezado con mi propio punto de vista. Habrá música, fotos, curiosidades y alguna que otra cosa interesante. Al final, cada quien le da a las canciones su propio significado personal. Esa es la idea, todo es relativo y depende de nosotros y de lo que estemos viviendo y sintiendo en el momento.
From today on, you could know a little more about the meaning and inspiration for the lyrics of many famous and some not so famous songs. In The lyrics of Rock I will try to give you every week a different, funny and entertaining analysis, based in real information and seasoned with my personal point of view. There will be photos, music, curiosities and one or two interesting things. In the end, the interpretation of a song depends on each one of us and that´s the idea. Everything is relative and conected with how we feel when the song plays.
Decidí empezar esta nueva sección con una de mis bandas favoritas, Nirvana, y su canción Lounge Act, del multipremiado y mundialmente alabado Nevermind, segundo disco de la banda. Lounge Act, que comienza con un profundo intro de línea de bajo, es la canción número 9 del disco publicado por Geffen el 24 de Septiembre de 1991 y dura apenas 2:36 minutos.
I decided to start this new section with one of my favourite bands, Nirvana and their song Lounge Act, from the multiawarded and worldwide acclaimed, Nevermind, second record of the band. Lounge Act, the 2:36 minutes song that starts with a deep bass line intro, is the song number 9 of the record, released by Geffen on September 24 of 1991.
Siempre pensé que se trataba de una canción de amor o algo parecido. Pero, vayamos al origen de esta canción, remontémonos a principios de los años ´90, concretamente, a mediados de 1990. Kurt Cobain y Tobi Vail, baterista de la banda Bikini Kill, son novios. Nirvana trabaja en las canciones que formarán parte de su segundo disco. Kurt escribe una canción inspirada en su relación sentimental con Tobi, que la banda bautiza con el nombre de Lounge Act, simplemente porque la música de la misma les hacía pensar en una canción lounge que podría tocar cualquier banda de un bar. En cuanto a la letra, Cobain dijo una vez que “La canción habla sobre tener una visión que es destruida por una relación sentimental, y sobre no ser capaz de terminar lo que haces artísticamente porque la otra persona se mete en tu camino”.
I always thought that this was a love song or something like that. But let´s go to the origin of this song, back to the 90´s, exactly to 1990. Kurt Cobain and Tobi Vail (drummer of the band Bikini Kill) have a relationship. Nirvana is working on new songs for their second album. Kurt writes a song inspired in his romance with Tobi Vail that the band will name Lounge Act because the music make them think about a lounge song that could perform any bar band. About the lyrics, Cobain said once that “The song is about have a vision that is destroyed by a relationship, and about not being able to finish what you´re doing artisticaly because the other person gets in your way”.
Tobi Vail tiene dudas acerca de la credibilidad “indie” de Kurt y este, para demostrarle que esta equivocada, se tatúa en el antebrazo izquierdo el logo de K Records (una disquera independiente) y lo deja plasmado en parte de la letra de Lounge Act (“Me arrestaré a mi mismo y usaré un escudo”). Tobi termina con Kurt poco antes de la salida de Nevermind. Cobain, furioso y con el corazón roto, le escribe a Vail una carta (que nunca envió) donde le dice que Lounge Act era la única canción que ha escrito sobre ella pero que nunca la tocaba si Courtney Love estaba cerca.
Tobi has doubts about Kurt´s indie credibility, so he gets a tattoo, the logo of K Records (an indie record label) on his left forearm to prove her that she´s wrong and he even captures this in Lounge Act when he sings (“I´ll arrest myself I´ll wear a shield”). Tobi breaks with Kurt shortly before the release of Nevermind. Cobain, furious and with a broken heart, writes a letter to Vail (that he never sended) where he says to her that Lounge Act was the only song that he wrote about her and that he never performed it when Courtney Love was near.
Por otro lado, y según contó la misma Courtney Love (no muy dada a ponerse en segundo lugar), al periodista brasilero Lucío Ribeiro para el Blog Popload en el año 2012, “La mayor parte de las canciones de Nirvana son sobre ella”, a lo que agregó “¿Alguna vez te has enamorado de una persona a quien hagas lo que hagas jamás vas a impresionar? Eso fue lo que pasó. Kurt sentía un amor casi suicida por esa tonta”.
On the other hand, and according to Courtney Love herself (not very given to admit being in a second place), to the brasilian journalist Lucio Ribeiro for Popload blog in 2012, “The biggest part of Nirvana´s songs are about her” adding “Have you ever fall in love with someone that whatever you do never going to impress? That was what happened. Kurt felt almost a suicide love for that dumb”.
