La canción que elegí para hoy es una canción de amor, no de la clase de amor en el que la mayoría pensaría de buenas a primeras, el de pareja, sino del amor hacia un amigo, el de la amistad. Bien dicen por ahí que no hay mayor tesoro que un buen amigo. Esta joya se llama Say hello to heaven y pertenece a la banda estadounidense Temple of the dog. Quizás la mayoría de ustedes no los conozca pero no se preocupen, yo estoy aquí para presentárselos jeje. Esta canción aparece en el disco homónimo, el único que sacó el grupo liderado por Chris Cornell. Say hello to heaven una poderosa balada de 6:22 minutos, fue el segundo sencillo promocional del disco y es la canción que abre el álbum producido por Rick Parashar, el mismo fue grabado entre Noviembre y Diciembre de 1990 y publicado a través del sello A&M Records en Abril de 1991. Tanto la canción como la banda surgieron tras un triste acontecimiento y con un único fin, homenajear a un amigo. Pero vayamos al origen.
The song that I choose for today is a love song, not the kind of love that most of you would think first time, a romance, but the love for a friend, the friendship love. Not in vain they say that there´s no biggest treasure than a good friend. This jewel is called Say hello to heaven and belongs to the USA band Temple of the dog. Maybe most of you don´t know them but don´t worry, I´m here to introduce them to you hehe. This song appears in their homonymous record, the only one that the band guided by Chris Cornell released. Say hello to heaven, a powerful ballad of 6:22 minutes, is the song that opens the record and was the second promotional single of the album produced by Rick Parashar between November and December of 1990 and released through A&M Records in April 1991. Bothe the song and the band spurt up after a sad event and with just one intention, pay tribute to a friend. But lets go to the beggining.
Estamos en Seattle a mediados de los años ´80. Chris Cornell (líder de Soundgarden) y Andrew Wood (cantante de Malfunkshun) son amigos, colegas y comparten apartamento. Tras la disolución de Malfunkshun, Wood es invitado a tomar el micrófono de Mother Love Bone, banda integrada por Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Bruce Fairweather y Greg Gilmore. Corre el año 1988, la era pre-grunge está en pleno auge y en cada rincón de Seattle hay una banda ensayando, entre todas ellas existe un gran sentimiento de hermandad y compañerismo, todos se conocen, todos se apoyan y aunque aún no lo saben, todos darán vida a un nuevo sonido en el rock, el grunge.
We are in Seattle in the middle of the ´80´s. Chris Cornell (leader of Soundgarden) and Andrew Wood (singer of Malfunkshun) are friends, partners and roommates. After Malfunkshun disolution, Wood is invited to be the singer of Mother Love Bone, the band of Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Bruce Fairweather and Greg Gilmore. It´s 1988, the pre grunge era is in progress and in every Seattle´s corner is a band rehearsing, there is a big brotherhood feeling between them, they know each others, they support each others and even if they still don´t know it they will create a new sound in rock music, grunge.
Para 1989, Mother Love Bone comienza sus sesiones de estudio para lo que será su primer disco. Andrew Wood se muestra como un frontman único y todo parece indicar que será la primera estrella del nuevo sonido que está naciendo en Seattle. Sobre la tarima Wood es explosivo, carismático, extrovertido, con una poderosa voz y puesta en escena y tan talentoso como adicto. Sí, Andrew apenas tiene 22 años y ya cuenta con un largo historial de visitas a clínicas de desintoxicación para tratar de vencer su adicción a la heroína, objetivo que nunca logró porque en Marzo de 1990 murió a causa de una sobredosis. Sólo tenía 24 años. Aunque no logró alcanzar la fama mundial, como ocurriría poco después con muchos de sus amigos, su muerte tuvo un gran impacto en la naciente nueva escena musical de Seattle.
In 1989, Mother Love Bone starts the studio sessions for their first record. Andrew Wood seems to be a unique frontman and everything points that he would be the first star of this new Seattle sound. On stage Wood is explosive, charismatic, extroverted, with a powerful voice and staging and as talented as addict. Yes, Andrew is only 22 and he has already a long background of visits in detox clinics to stop his heroin addiction, something he never achieved because in March of 1990 he died from an overdose. He was only 24 years old. Although he didn´t get to be famous, as many of his friends did a little bit after, his death had a big impact over the upcoming Seattle´s new musical scene.
Uno de los más afectados con la muerte de Andrew Wood es Chris Cornell, su amigo y antiguo compañero de piso. En pleno duelo y con los sentimientos a flor de piel, Cornell se inspira y escribe dos canciones en honor a su fallecido amigo, Say hello 2 heaven y Reach Down que luego muestra a Stone Gossard y Jeff Ament de Mother Love Bone que han decidido no seguir más con el nombre y ya han formado junto a Mike McCready otra banda, Mookie Blaylock, con un tal Eddie Vedder como cantante.
One of the most upset with Andrew Wood´s death is Chris Cornell, his friend and old roommate. During the sorrow and with skin-deep feelings, Cornell inspires and writes two songs for his friend, Say hello 2 heaven and Reach Down that some months ago shows to Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament of Mother Love Bone guys. Stone and Jeff have decided to stop using that name and they are already working with Mike McCready in a new band, Mookie Blaylock with someone called Eddie Vedder as singer.
En Noviembre de 1990 y tras continuos ensayos, las dos canciones de Cornell dan paso a un álbum de diez temas y Chris Cornell y Matt Cameron de Soundgarden se unen a Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament y Mike McCready de la ya extinta banda de Wood y se convierten en Temple of the dog, una banda que fue creada con un único propósito, homenajear al fallecido Andrew.
In November of 1990 and after continous rehearsings, the two songs that Cornell wrote open the way for a ten songs album and Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden joined Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and Mike McCready of the now extint Mothe Love Bone and became Temple of the dog, a band created with just one intention, pay homage to the late Andrew Wood.
Hablar de Say hello 2 heaven es hablar de una hermosa letra del rock, una dedicatoria profundamente emotiva a un amigo que se ha ido y que en la espectacular voz de Chris Cornell se transforma en una joya. Entre las referencias que aparecen en la letra de la canción resalta la de Stargazer (Soñadora), donde Cornell no sólo trata de darle consuelo sino que también describe la tristeza que la embarga y como sólo el amor logrará curar esa herida tan profunda que ahora está en su corazón: “Pobre Soñadora / ella no tienen lágrimas en sus ojos / Suave como un susurro / Ella sabe que con el tiempo el amor sana todas las heridas”. Stargazer (Soñadora), era el apodo que Andrew Wood le tenía a su novia Xanna LaFuente.
Talk about Say hello to heaven is talk about a beautiful rock lyric, a deep and emotional dedicatory to a friend that have gone and that on Chris Cornell´s amazing voice turns into a jewel. Between the references that appear in the lyrics, the one that most stands out is the Stargazer, where Cornell not only tries to consol her but also describes the sadness that overcomes her and how with time love will get to heal that deep wound that is now in her heart: “Poor Stargazer / she´s got no tears in her eyes / Soft like a whisper / She knows love heals all wounds with time”. Stargazer was Andrew Wood´s girlfriend Xanna LaFuente nickname.
La intensidad de Say hello 2 heaven va aumentando en cada frase como si se estuviese experimentando el mismísimo ascenso al cielo de Andrew Wood. Esta canción es una de las más notables interpretaciones vocales de Cornell donde utiliza todas las cualidades que posee frente al micrófono para emocionar, deleitar y sacudir nuestras almas. Es tierna y a la vez poderosa, nos invita a llorar pero sin hacernos perder la esperanza. No hay manera que nuestra piel no se erice al escucharla.
The intensity of Say hello 2 heaven grows in every phrase like if we were experienced Andrew Wood´s ascent to heaven. This song is one of the most remarkable Cornell´s vocals performances where he uses all the qualities he has in front of the microphone to touch, delight and shake our souls. The song is tender but at the same time powerful, invites us to cry but without make us lose hope. There is no way to listen it and our skin doesn`t bristle.

El video que les pondré es del 22 de Diciembre de 1990, esta fue la tercera vez que Say hello 2 heaven fue interpretada en vivo junto a los nueve temas restantes del disco que homenajeaba a Andrew Wood. Esto ocurrió en el Teatro Moore de Seattle.
The video I choose is from December 22 , 1990, this was the third time that Say hello 2 heaven was performed live with the rest of the nine songs of the record that honoured Andrew Wood. This happened in Seattle`s Moore Theater.
