Por las informaciones de los medios pareciera que el tema ambiental ha cobrado importancia en muchos países. Hay sitios donde se puede decir que hay bastante conciencia, que la gente está clara sobre la importancia de prevenir los daños ambientales, porque entienden las consecuencias de dañar el ambiente. Sí destruimos el mundo que nos rodea, pues sencillamente no podremos vivir.

From media reports it seems that the environmental issue has gained importance in many countries. There are places where we can say that there is a lot of awareness, that people are clear about the importance of preventing environmental damage, because they understand the consequences of damaging the environment. If we destroy the world around us, we simply cannot live.

I live in a mountainous area, where there are numerous river springs, where fresh water is still abundant. In spite of the incessant deforestation, the cloud forest still occupies an important part of the mountain, which maintains sufficient environmental humidity for the rivers to have water all year round.
Pero existe un gravísimo problema de contaminación que comenzó hace unos sesenta años, cuando se establecieron los primeros pobladores del sector. Desde el principio la gente resolvió el problema de las excretas, de las aguas negras, mediante la construcción de pozos sépticos, nunca se logró que las autoridades hicieran un moderno sistema de alcantarillado.
Cuando eran pocas casas el impacto ambiental de esas excretas subterráneas era casi insignificante. Pero al día de hoy en la zona debe haber al menos veinticinco mil o treinta mil personas. Casi todos descargando las aguas negras a los pozos subterráneos, porque otra buena parte de la gente descargan sus aguas residuales directamente en los numerosos arroyos que corren por la zona.
But there is a very serious pollution problem that began about sixty years ago, when the first settlers in the area settled. From the beginning, the people solved the problem of excrement and sewage by building septic tanks, but the authorities were never able to build a modern sewage system.
When there were only a few houses, the environmental impact of these subway excreta was almost insignificant. But today there must be at least twenty-five or thirty thousand people in the area. Almost all of them discharge their sewage into the subway wells, because a good number of them discharge their sewage directly into the numerous streams that run through the area.

Nunca he sabido cuáles razones técnicas, si es que las hay, explican la ausencia de un sistema de cloacas en una zona con tanta población. Sobre todo porque el resto de la ciudad, en la parte baja del valle, sufre constantemente la escasez de agua potable, y toda esa agua que dañamos en mi sector pudiera aliviar el problema de sequía a miles de personas.
