El día de hoy vamos a hablar un poco con respecto a un tema que muchas personas dan por entendido porque consideran que no es necesario entenderlo ya que solo buscan hacer la foto y ya pero la verdad es que todo lo que está detrás de la distancia focal es mucho más interesante de lo que creen.

Today we are going to talk about a topic that many people take for granted because they consider that it is not necessary to understand it since they only want to take the photo and now, but the truth is that everything that is behind the focal length it is much more interesting than you think.

Y si, es sobre la distancia o longitud focal de lo que vamos a hablar hoy. Son esos números acompañados por las dos "mm" o "milímetros" que están en todos nuestros lentes u objetivos, van desde los 10mm hasta los 300mm y hasta más dependiendo del teleobjetivo.

Vamos entonces a empezar hablando un poco sobre que es exactamente este termino fotográfico para poner las cosas un poco en contexto.

So let's start by talking a bit about what exactly this photographic term is to put things in context.

- Distancia Focal // Focal distance.

Cuando hablamos de la distancia focal no estamos hablando de la medida real de distancia de determinado lente, es más bien un cálculo de dicha distancia óptica a partir del punto donde coinciden los rayos de luz hasta el momento de formar un imagen nítida, algo como pueden apreciar en la imagen referencial.

When we talk about the focal length we are not talking about the real distance measurement of a certain lens, it is rather a calculation of said optical distance from the point where the light rays coincide until the moment of forming a clear image, something like they can appreciate in the referential image.

Ella nos indica el ángulo de visión, es decir, que tanto va a aparecer en la escena o encuadre de nuestras capturas. Por tanto, mientras más larga sea la distancia el ángulo será menor y la imagen la notaremos un poco más "comprimida". Cuando la distancia es más corta pues en ese caso el ángulo será mucho más ancho y la imagen se apreciará más abierta.

She tells us the angle of view, how much will appear in the scene or frame of our captures. Therefore, the longer the distance the angle will be smaller and the image will feel a little more "compressed". When the distance is shorter, in that case the angle will be much wider and the image will be more open.

Vamos entonces con unos ejemplos y una explicación breve de cada uno de ellos:

Como dijimos anteriormente mientras más corta sea la distancia el ángulo será más abierto. Acá podemos ver con gran detalle todas las flores sin ningún problema ni desenfoques. Por lo general estos números son ideales para paisajes pero también aplican para cualquier situación al aire libre.

As we said before, the shorter the distance, the more open the angle. Here we can see in great detail all the flowers without any problem or blur. These numbers are generally ideal for landscapes but also apply to any outdoor situation.

En esta segunda fotografía empezamos a subir la distancia al punto de llegar a 55mm. De igual manera comenzamos a visualizar un poco más de detalles en las flores y la profundidad de campo comienza a mostrarse un poco. Recuerden que esta profundidad es el desenfoque que ven al fondo de la captura.

In this second photograph we begin to climb the distance to the point of reaching 55mm. In the same way we begin to visualize a little more detail in the flowers and the depth of field begins to show a little. Remember that this depth is the blur you see at the bottom of the shot.

Ya aumentamos considerablemente la distancia y con el número también los detalles. Vean como se aprecia el centro de la flor, esto es producto de que a mayor distancia el ángulo se va cerrando y la foto se va tornando más compacta para terminar con un efecto parecido al que si usáramos una lupa.

We have already considerably increased the distance and with the number also the details. See how the center of the flower can be seen, this is the result of the fact that at a greater distance the angle closes and the photo becomes more compact to end up with an effect similar to that of using a magnifying glass.

Aquí con esta última foto llegamos a 140mm. No es la distancia más larga a la que puede llegar mi lente pero para efectos de mostrarles las diferencias funciona perfectamente. Vemos como únicamente está enfocado el centro de la foto y esto es porque al ser tan larga la distancia el ángulo se cierra logrando que salga enfocado esa parta de la captura nada más.

Here with this last photo we get to 140mm. It is not the longest distance my lens can go but for the purposes of showing you the differences it works perfectly. We see how only the center of the photo is in focus and this is because the distance being so long, the angle closes, making that part of the capture only focus.

Cada numero representado en milímetros debería de ser usado para ciertos tipos de fotografías, no es una regla pero casi siempre se aplica de esa manera. Las distancias más cortas son ideales para paisajes y lugares con poca iluminación, a medida que las distancias se vayan alargando pues las utilizaremos para retratos, fotografías de animales y naturaleza.

Each number represented in millimeters should be used for certain types of photographs, it is not a rule but it is almost always applied that way. The shorter distances are ideal for landscapes and places with little lighting, as the distances lengthen as we will use them for portraits, photographs of animals and nature.

Distancias de más 100mm son ideales para retratos poco invasivos y para locaciones con mucha iluminación. Como ven es toda una ciencia entender y saber estas cosas que, en mi opinión, son muy necesarias a la hora de hacer fotografías.

Distances over 100mm are ideal for minimally invasive portraits and brightly lit locations. As you can see, it is a science to understand and know these things that, in my opinion, are very necessary when taking photographs.
