The weekend was quite exhausting but enjoyable for me as I suggested to my old friend that we should visit Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn). In fact we should have been to a temple a few days ago; it’s our tradition to pay respect to Buddha statues on New Year Day. But this year, the authority has canceled the customary overnight praying in all temples to prevent the spread of virus infection.
Most Thai people would visit a few temples on early January days; there used to be temple tours of nine famous temples in one day. An old college friend of mine used to hire a bus for bringing all members of her families and interested friends to visit nine temples around Bangkok in one day! That really put me off visiting temples for a while as the rush and exhaustion from the day tour was quite memorable. So, I decided to take a boat trip to the quieter temple by the river this year.
We waited for about thirty minutes at Sathorn Pier for the supposedly ‘express’ boat. There were about fifteen people boarding the same boat. The weather was exceptionally good with warm sunshine and cool winter breezes. The water level was very high as the moon was full a few days ago. There’s so many empty seats on the boat. It felt strange not seeing crowds of tourists around the pier and on the boat. They would have enjoyed such a wonderful boat trip with fresh air and energising vibes from the river.
Everyone seemed to have fallen under the spell of the boat’s loud engine and sounds of the boat hitting the water. Everyone became silent and their eyes just moved along the riversides. I just couldn’t understand how people could keep their faces so flatly calm while I was hyped up by the river vibes. I just couldn’t keep still; my head bounced in all directions depending on the interesting views along both sides of the river. So, I kept hopping from left side to the right side of the boat to take photos of buildings along the river. Others must have thought I must have been a Chinese tourist who never saw a river before.
Although I have traveled along this old river so many times, I still felt excited as if this was my first river tour. I was eager to absorb all the sceneries along the way and I would take the same photos over again and again. The experience seemed so new each time; I could detect the changing moods of the river and her surroundings. So, I could never get bored by the same boat trip. The energy of the river is always new and changing. My friend became very subdued and calm during the boat trip. The river did have a perceptible effect on many people.
The blue sky and the flowing river seemed to have overwhelming quiet vibes or power over all the material manifestations such as the skyscrapers and modern condominium clusters along the river. Questions about life, meaning of happiness and destiny of my life were often thrown into my mind whenever I was close to the river’s vibes. It was as if powerful vibes from an old Buddha statue in a sacred temple pierced through my fuzzy mind and had woken the presence of the mind. Sometimes I discovered a big emptiness looking for an anchor of certainty and meaningful life. I wondered if the river goddess was trying to enlighten me about life and how to be happy amidst changes and uncertainty of the future world.
วันหยุดยาวที่ผ่านมา เราชวนเพื่อนเก่าไปนั่งเรือเที่ยว เพื่อไปไหว้พระขอพรช่วงปีใหม่ ปีนี้การสวดมนต์ข้ามปีไม่ได้รับการอนุมัติให้ดำเนินการเหมือนปีก่อน เพราะคนกลับมาเจอปัญหาโควิทระบาดอีกครั้ง สร้างความตื่นตระหนกให้กับคนทั่วไปอีก เราก็เลยคิดว่าเดินทางไปวัดอรุณเพื่อไหว้พระช่วงปีใหม่น่าจะดีกว่าไปวัดดังในฝั่งพระนคร เราชอบนั่งเรือเที่ยวขมวิวมาก เพื่อนก็ชอบความคิดนี้ เราก็ไปคอยเรือด่วนที่ท่าเรือสาทรมากกว้าสามสิบนาที เรือด่วนไม่มาด่วนเสียแล้ว แต่เราก็คอยได้เพราะอากาศที่ริมแม่น้ำนั้นดีสุดๆ แดดออกสดใส แต่มีลมพัดเย็นสบาย ไม่หนาวไม่ร้อน แม่น้ำก็เกือบล้นตลิ่ง เพราะพึ่งผ่านวันพระใหญ่มา ที่ท่าเรือมีคนไม่ถึงสิบห้าคน สถานที่ค่อนข้างโล่ง ไม่มีนักท่องเที่ยวเป็นร้อยกว่าคนเหมือนสมัยก่อน

ในเรือเองก็มีคนนั่งอยู่ไม่ถึงยี่สิบคน เก้าอี้ว่างเต็มไปหมด ดูแล้วก็น่าใจหาย มันดูโล่งจนผิดปกติ ทุกคนนั่งเงียบกริบ สายตาก็จ้องไปที่วิวริมแม่น้ำ เสียงเรือและคลื่นที่กระทบกาบเรือทำให้คนตกอยู่ในภวังค์ มีแต่เราที่มีความรู้สึกตื่นเต้นกับสภาพแวดล้อมตลอดทาง เรารู้สึกเหมือนกับว่าเราพึ่งเดินทางโดยเรือเป็นครั้งแรก ทุกอย่างรอบข้างดูน่าตื่นตาตื่นใจมาก เราจะถ่ายรูปตึกระฟ้าและบ้านเก่าๆตามสองข้างฝั่ง ซึ่งเราก็ถ่ายรูปพวกนี้หลายครั้งแล้ว แต่เราก็รู้สึกว่าแต่ละครั้งนั้นทุกอย่างได้เปลื่ยนแปลงไปแล้ว เราจึงไม่รู้สึกเบื่อเลย
ปีนี้เป็นปีที่คนจะจดจำไปนาน เพราะปัญหาของโควิทที่คนนำมาแพร่เชื้อไปหลายแห่ง ทำให้ชีวิตต้องเปลี่ยนแปลงไปมาก ทำให้เศรษฐกิจพังไปหลายส่วน โชคดีที่ครั้งนี้รัฐบาลได้เรียนรู้จากความผิดพลาดของการตัดสินใจในครั้งก่อน ที่ทำให้คนธรรมดาได้รับผลกระทบกันอย่างสาหัส การนั่งเรือเที่ยวทำให้สมองและจิตใจได้พักผ่อน และได้ทบทวนสิ่งที่ผ่านมา ตลอดจนทำให้คิดพิจารณาว่าอนาคตอันไม่แน่นอนนี้ เราจะมีการเตรียมการรับมือได้อย่างไรบ้าง
เราได้รับพลังดีๆจากแม่น้ำ ท้องฟ้า และสายลม ทำให้เราได้ชาร์จพลังเก็บไว้ใช้ต่อไป การได้ไปเดินเล่นที่วัดอรุณและวัดหงส์ฯก็คล้ายกับการกลับไปในที่เก่าๆ เพื่อนที่ไปด้วยกันบอกเราว่าเหมือนได้กบับไปบ้านเก่าที่เคยอยู่มาก่อน เรารู้สึกว่าในอดีตชาติเราเคยเดินอยู่ในระแวกนี้เป็นประจำ ชีวิตคนเราก็มีเรื่องที่เป็นปริศนาให้ติดตามไปเรื่อย เราก็กวังว่าทุกอย่างจะคลี่คลายไปในทางที่ดีขึ้นเรื่อยๆ

Such great photos @kaminchan, there is certainly a lot to look at but I can understand why a lot of people chill during the boat ride. The water spirits can be so fickle, rocking some people to a contemplative state while enlivening others.... either way they are powerful and very much in control of us. We are water beings after all so being in close contact with water spirits has a noticeable influence always.

Oh, I am the same way. When I travel or see beautiful scenery, I just can't stop taking pictures, even if the ones I am snapping are very similar to the ones I just took. It is as if I fear I will not remember enough of what I saw and want to be able to revisit every little bit of it later.
