I had to do a lot of research because the truth is that I had not touched the subject of minerals for a long time. As an engineer I have worked a little with the subject but it is not my forte.
Minerals / Origin and matter
In the first instance I was quick, I left the office and took some pictures. When I read minerals I immediately thought of trees, their process and the final product when we use it in other things like chairs or tables.
And after reading on several sites I realized I was a bit lost 😜.
I kept researching
And I came across a quick easy and simple classification, to differentiate and understand when we talk about Minerals.
- A mineral is non-living matter, often solid. Ex: sand, a rock. A mineral does not move, does not breathe, does not reproduce.
- A plant is a living thing that needs soil, water and light to live and develop. A plant does not move, or moves very little, but reproduces and breathes. E.g.: a tree, a seaweed.
- An animal is a living being, which needs to eat to grow. Often (but not always) an animal moves to find food. E.g.: an ant, a tadpole. An animal reproduces and breathes.
With this in mind I kept looking for information and of course a reason to detail in my publication and justify some "good" pictures.
This is how I kept finding tips that gave information that I could continue to expand on;
- Lava (molten rock), sand (crushed rock) or a pebble (weathered rock) are three examples of minerals because they originated from rock which is a mineral.
- A fruit, a leaf, a seed, a flower are parts of a plant.
- A feather, parchment (animal skin), ink (squid), ossicles are all of animal origin because they are parts of animals.
Then light was made;
- A can is made of aluminum. It is a metal extracted from an ore (bauxite) and processed by man in a metallurgical plant. Its origin is mineral. This is also the case with salt, which is a mineral dissolved in seawater and extracted by man by evaporation.
- A piece of furniture is an assembly of wooden plates carved by man. This wood comes exclusively from the trunk of a tree. So its origin is vegetable. The same applies to sunflower oil or maple syrup, which come from pressed seeds and boiled sap, respectively.
- The leather of a shoe comes from the skin of an animal, prepared in a tannery, then sewn. Cheese is also of animal origin as it consists of fermented and then matured milk.

My everyday office glass is a simple and perfect sample of a mineral, matter and origin.
- Aluminum* is a non-ferromagnetic metal.
This metal is extracted only from the mineral known as bauxite, by transformation first into alumina by the Bayer process and then into metallic aluminum by electrolysis.
This metal possesses a combination of properties that make it very useful in materials engineering, such as its low density and high resistance to corrosion. By means of suitable alloys, its mechanical strength can be significantly increased. It is a good conductor of electricity and heat, is easily machined and is very cheap. For all these reasons, since the middle of the 20th century it has been the most widely used metal after steel.
Bauxite](https://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bauxita) is a sedimentary rock with a relatively high aluminum content. It is the main source of aluminum in the world.
So I can tell you, we are surrounded by interesting things that without realizing it represent more than we thought. A simple glass, something that is part of our daily lives, carries a whole process and an interesting dynamic in its origin, to then convert the matter and become what it is for the use and improvement in our lives.
I want to thank for this kind of initiative that makes us see beyond the everyday and learn from the simplest. *A mineral that became part of our lives.

Tuve que investigar mucho porque la verdad tenía mucho tiempo que no tocaba el tema de minerales. Cómo ingeniero he trabajo un poco con el tema pero no es mi fuerte.
Minerales / Origen y materia
En primera instancia fui rápido, salí de la oficina y me toma algunas fotos. Al leer minerales de inmediato pensé en los árboles, su proceso y el producto final cuando lo usamos en otras cosas como sillas o mesas.
Y luego de leer en varios sitios me di cuenta que estaba un poco perdida 😜

Y me encontré con una clasificación rápida fácil y sencilla, para diferenciar y entender cuando hablamos de los Minerales.
- Un mineral es materia no viva, a menudo sólida. Ej: arena, una roca. Un mineral no se mueve, no respira, no se reproduce.
- Una planta es un ser vivo que necesita del suelo, agua y luz para vivir y desarrollarse. Una planta no se mueve, o muy poco, pero se reproduce y respira. Ej: un árbol, un alga.
- Un animal es un ser vivo, que necesita comer para crecer. A menudo (pero no siempre) un animal se mueve para encontrar comida. Ej: una hormiga, un renacuajo. Un animal se reproduce y respira.
Con esto en mente seguí buscando información y por supuesto un motivo para detallar en mi publicación y justificar unas "buenas" fotografías.
Fue así como seguía encontrando tips que daban información que podía seguir ampliando;
- La lava (roca fundida), la arena (roca triturada) o un guijarro (roca erosionada) son tres ejemplos de minerales porque se originaron en la roca que es un mineral.
- Una fruta, una hoja, una semilla, una flor son partes de una planta.
- Una pluma, un pergamino (piel de animal), tinta (de calamar), osículos son todos de origen animal porque son partes de animales.
Entonces se hizo la luz;
- Una lata está hecha de aluminio. Es un metal extraído de una mena (bauxita) y procesada por el hombre en una planta metalúrgica. Su origen es mineral. Este es también el caso de la sal, que es un mineral disuelto en el agua de mar y el hombre extrae por evaporación.
- Un mueble es un ensamble de placas de madera talladas por el hombre. Esta madera viene exclusivamente del tronco de un árbol. Entonces su origen es vegetal. Lo mismo aplica para el aceite de girasol o la miel de maple que provienen de semillas prensadas y de savia hervida, respectivamente.
- La piel de un zapato viene de la piel de un animal, preparada en una curtidora, luego cosida. El queso también es de origen animal pues consiste de leche fermentada y luego madurada.

Mi vaso de uso diario en la oficina es una muestra simple y perfecta de un mineral, materia y origen.
El aluminio Se trata de un metal no ferromagnético.
Este metal se extrae únicamente del mineral conocido con el nombre de bauxita, por transformación primero en alúmina mediante el proceso Bayer y a continuación en aluminio metálico mediante electrólisis.

Un simple vaso, algo que es parte de nuestro día a día, lleva todo un proceso y una dinámica interesante en su origen, para luego convertir la materia y ser lo que es para el aprovechamiento y mejora en nuestras vidas.
Quiero dar gracias por este tipo de iniciativa que nos hace ver más allá de lo cotidiano y aprender desde lo más simple. Un mineral que se volvio parte de nuestras vidas.
