For Australians: How to save $99 when joining Qantas Frequent Flyer membership and get 1000 points

in GEMS2 years ago (edited)

Flights are about to start again and I thought it might be a good time to start earning Qantas Frequent Flyer points. For those of you who have not heard of Qantas Frequent Flyer points, it is probably one of the most popular points system in Australia, where there are many ways to earn points and many ways to spend points. For example you could earn points from your health insurance, and you can spend points to either get cheaper flights or buy things from the Qantas store (anything from electrical goods to everyday goods).

I want to travel a fair bit in the future and I have never had Qantas points before. I always thought that joining frequent flyer would cost money and that it wouldn't be worth it, so I never looked into it. However I found out recently that you can join for free so why not? Here is one way you can join for free (I'm sure there are many other ways). If you don't try to find a way to join for free, however, you would have to pay $99!

After you have joined, you may wish to think about some easy ways to get points. Continuing on from my last video, did you know:
a) If you are double vaccinated in Australia, you get a digital certificate?
b) If you upload your digital certificate to the Qantas app, you get 1000 frequent flyer points?
In this video I will demonstrate how to get the 1000 points! Alternatively, you can also choose to get a $20 discount off a Qantas flight or Jetstar flight, if you do not think the 1000 points is worth it.

So after getting some points you might be wondering what they're worth in terms of dollars? It is very hard to say as different types of flight seats cost different amount of points. However, for me it is most likely I will spend on something like the below screenshot, obtained from booking a flight through the Qantas website:

You can see the cheapest price for one way flight from Brisbane to Singapore would be $552 without any points. However, if you have some points, it will cost you 25,200 points plus $205. Therefore, 25,200 points is equivalent to 552-205=$347. Hence it is about 72 points for $1. In other words, each point is worth about 1.3 cents. Or you can say 1000 points is worth about $13.7 Australian dollars.

Based on this calculation, perhaps it is better in the above video to select $20 off a flight rather than the 1000 quantas points. But I think the $20 had a deadline where as qantas points don't expire as long as you earn / spend some amount of points every 18 months (according to Google on 18/12/2021).
