¡Hola, amigos de Hive! ¿Alguna vez han escuchado hablar de que los antiguos egipcios adoraban a los gatos? Seguramente que sí, pero tal vez no sepan la razón de eso, o si esa afirmación es cierta. Por eso los invito a seguir leyendo este post, y posiblemente descubrirán muchas cosas interesantes.
Hello Hive friends! Have you ever heard of the ancient Egyptians worshiping cats? Surely you do, but maybe you don't know the reason for that, or if that statement is true. That is why I invite you to continue reading this post, and possibly will discover many interesting things.
Primero debemos tomar en cuenta que los antiguos egipcios tenían una concepción del universo muy diferente a la que tenían otras civilizaciones como la judio-cristiana y la greco-romana. Estas dos percibían al hombre como la especie predominante, ubicada en el centro del universo para dominar el entorno, los egipcios, por el contrario, creían que los hombres, los animales y las plantas estaban en las mismas condiciones, y debían convivir en perfecta armonía.
First we must take into account that the ancient Egyptians had a very different conception of the universe than that of other civilizations such as the Jewish-Christian and the Greco-Roman. These two perceived man as the predominant species, located in the center of the universe to dominate the environment, the Egyptians, on the contrary, believed that men, animals and plants were in the same conditions, and should coexist in perfect harmony.
Pero ¿de dónde proviene esa «adoración» a los gatos?
But where does this "worship" of cats come from?
En biología existe un termino que se llama «Mutualismo interespecífico» es decir, se trata de la colaboración mutua de dos especies diferente para coexistir en un mismo espacio, y eso es lo que ocurría en el antiguo Egipto entre los gatos y las personas pues, la principal fuente de alimentación en ese entonces eran los cereales como el trigo y la cebada, y las personas tenían almacenes llenos de estos granos, pero los roedores constantemente asediaban las reservas, los gatos entonces entraban en acción controlando las plagas, y además se deshacían de otros animales peligrosos como serpientes y alacranes, es decir, protegían los alimentos y las casas. Las personas entonces se beneficiaban de los gatos y les brindaban a cambio atención, refugio y cariño.
In biology there is a term called "interspecific mutualism", it's the mutual collaboration of two different species to coexist in the same space, and that is what happened in ancient Egypt between cats and people, then, the main source of food at that time were cereals such as wheat and barley, and people had warehouses full of these grains, but rodents constantly besieged the reserves, cats then came into action controlling pests, and also disposed of from other dangerous animals such as snakes and scorpions, that is, they protected food and houses. People then benefited from cats and gave them care, shelter and affection in return.

The ancient Egyptians didn't worship cats as gods, but they revered them as demigods, not only because they provided domestic protection, but because they viewed them as the physical representation of feline gods.
Los humanos le tenían gran cariño a los «Mius» (así llamaban los antiguos egipcios a los gatos) y los respetaban tanto que cuando morían, le presentaban honores funerarios como la momificación e incluso, sus dueños se afeitaban las cejas como señal de luto, además, a quien osara matar a un gato intencionalmente, le caía todo el peso de la ley.
Humans had great affection for "Mius" (that's what the ancient Egyptians called cats) and respected them so much that when they died, they presented funeral honors such as mummification and even their owners shaved their eyebrows as a sign of mourning, in addition, whoever dared to intentionally kill a cat, the full weight of the law fell over him/her.
Si bien los egipcios no adoraban a los gatos que tenían en la tierra, sí existían algunas deidades felinas a las que les tenían gran respeto y hasta temor.
Although the Egyptians didn't worship the cats they had on earth, there were some feline deities to whom they had great respect and even fear.
Bastet
Entre las deidades felinas, la diosa Bastet era la más importante para los antiguos egipcios, representada con cuerpo de mujer y cabeza de gata.
Among the feline deities, the goddess Bastet was the most important for the ancient Egyptians, represented with the body of a woman and the head of a cat.
Ellos creían que cuando Ra, el dios sol, creó al mundo, se decepcionó mucho al ver la maldad que predominaba entre los humanos, entonces envió a la tierra a su hija, Bastet para instaurar el orden y detener la maldad.
They believed that when Ra, the sun god, created the world, he was very disappointed to see the evil that prevailed among humans, so he sent his daughter, Bastet, to earth to establish order and stop the evil.
Sin embargo, cuando Bastet llegó a la tierra, se transformó en la temible Sejmet, conservando el cuerpo de mujer, pero su cabeza ahora era de leona. La criatura estaba sedienta de sangre y en su ira exterminó a buenas y malas personas por igual, no tuvo piedad de nadie.
However, when Bastet came to earth, she transformed into the fearsome Sekhmet, retaining the body of a woman, but her head was now that of a lioness. The creature was thirsty for blood and in its anger it exterminated good and bad people alike, it had no mercy on anyone.
Ra tuvo misericordia de la humanidad y le pidió ayuda a los otros dioses para detenerla, pero no pudieron hacerlo, ella estaba incontrolable. De esta forma, los seres humanos que todavía quedaban, recurrieron a una astuta estratagema. Prepararon grandes recipientes con cerveza y la tiñeron de rojo, la temible Sejmet bebió el contenido de las vasijas, creyendo que era sangre, entonces se embriagó y se quedó dormida. Al despertar, su ira se aplacó y ella volvió a transformarse en Bastet, la diosa apacible.
Ra had mercy on humanity and asked the other gods for help to stop her, but they could not do it, she was uncontrollable. In this way, the remaining human beings resorted to a cunning stratagem. They prepared large containers with beer and stained it red, the fearsome Sekhmet drank the contents of the vessels, believing it to be blood, then became drunk and fell asleep. Upon awakening, her anger subsided and she transformed back into Bastet, the gentle goddess.
Bubatis
Por esta razón, en la ciudad de Bubastis se construyeron templos para adorar a Bastet, y allí celebraban grandes festivales donde bebían cerveza en honor de la diosa gata, para mantener su ira apagada.
For this reason, in the city of Bubastis temples was built to worship Bastet, and there they held great festivals where they drank beer in honor of the cat goddess, to keep their anger quenched.
Hoy en día, los arqueólogos han encontrado muchos indicios de esta época en Bubastis, y comenzaron a llamarla «La ciudad de los gatos» debido a la gran cantidad de vestigios de templos construidos en honor de la deidad felina.

Como ven, amigos, eso de la «adoración» de los egipcios por sus gatos, no es más que una tergiversación o mala interpretación de la forma en que ellos los percibían, es decir, los gatos sí eran respetados, admirados y hasta venerados por ser la representación física de sus dioses felinos, además de que se beneficiaban de sus servicios como cazadores y exterminadores de plagas, con lo que los consideraban protectores del hogar, pero no eran considerados dioses.

Recuerdo que una vez leí que si alguien en el antiguo egipto mataba un gato, corría el riesgo de ser linchado por la población. Se trataba de un libro sobre gatos en general. Después leí sobre el antiguo egipto como tal, sin que hubiera una conexión entre ambas lecturas, más por curiosidad que por otra cosa, y supe lo que comentas sobre la convivencia entre los egipcios y los gatos.
