"¿Hola? ¿Haces logos?
-No honey, you don't need a logo. You need a branding system and despite what many believe, a brand is made up of much more than just a logo".
This sounds like the everyday life of a graphic designer trying to explain to his client the importance of a solid brand identity, but few seem to truly understand its importance. That's why today I want to talk to you about one of the things I've been most passionate about since I started learning graphic design a few months ago: Branding.
And what is Branding? Well, it is basically the process of building and defining a brand and its communicational elements, whether they are visual (such as its logo, colors and typographies) or not (such as its values, tone of voice and communication pillars). Many elements can be part of this system, even aromas. Did you know that? For example, have you noticed the difference between the scent of fast food chains such as McDonalds, Arturos or KFC? Each of these companies has a scent that identifies it and is part of its system of communicational elements. The branding process includes very diverse areas such as graphic design, strategy building, creative writing, interior design and even architecture.
So if you were thinking of starting your venture with just a logo, I recommend you to stay and read this post to get advice on the whole process of creating your brand.
| Why is branding process important?
Why would that change your decision? Because we don't all know coffee, but we all know brands. Brands are part of people's lives and if you combine a good product with a brand that matches the public your success is assured. Your brand is an asset that can greatly increase the value of your product, an opportunity to invest in something that will allow you to position yourself and generate greater profits in the long term.

Características de un buen branding | Characteristics of good branding
- Sustainability: A branding process cannot be carried out based on trends because they are fleeting and when new trends arrive your brand could become obsolete and forgotten. It is better to focus on styles because these can be adaptable to the trends of the moment and in this way your brand will always be fresh but at the same time it will keep its style. A good example of this is Coca-Cola, a brand that since its launch in 1892 has maintained its familiar and classic style but constantly adapts to current trends.
- Consistency: Your graphic style or visual identity must transmit other elements of your brand, such as its tone of voice, values and personality. For example, it would not make much sense that if you want your brand to convey a sense of elegance, sophistication and exclusivity, you should use super flashy colors and artistic typographies; you would rather use neutral colors, serif typographies and a minimalist design that expresses elegance. To achieve this, I recommend you to make an audit of the brands you admire and think about what they transmit with their visual identity.
- Adaptability: It is important that your brand is adaptable to different cultures, since this way your process of expanding your market will be much easier. As I mentioned before, brands are part of people's lives, so if you want a global brand it must be inspiring for people from different countries and cultures. Only if people feel identified with your brand will they make it part of their lives. A good example is the Unilever company with its ice cream line, which changes its name depending on the country (In Venezuela it is Tio Rico, in Spain it is Pingüino).
