Well first of all the castle has the name palmela because it is the same name of the city where it is located, the city of palmela is a small town that is located in the southern margin of Portugal about 50km from the center of Lisbon, its location is splendid because it was built in the sierra da arrabida and in front of the beautiful Troya peninsula, which gives you the opportunity to enjoy a view of the Atlantic Ocean and a mountain range.😮😮
When the castle of Palmela was built, it was placed in this strategic point to alert the dangers that came from the sea, from the English, Spanish, Dutch troops to pirates! It is interesting because there are historical records of how this castle communicated with fire and smoke signals with the castle of Sao Jorge, which was in the center of Lisbon; As I mentioned before, it is not my favorite castle, but it is the most complete because inside there are several rooms that narrate a lot of Portuguese history, including the occupation of the territory by the Muslims. It is rare to find us with a castle that other museums have inside, so for me this one is special! besides being free and easy to get to and park!🤔😮😮
As I was telling you, the castle of Palmela has a series of museums inside where you take a trip to the past to see all the evidence that was found in excavations that reveal what the towns were like before Portugal became a nation! These records date back to the Neolithic, that is, the time when society was established as farmers, fishermen! I mean, when we stopped being nomads and began to exploit resources permanently, several studies were carried out to measure carbon 14 in certain materials and structures in the Palmela area and it was discovered that in 310 BC there were already people inhabiting what which is currently the castle!🎨🎭🖼
Here in the photos you can see all kinds of material that was discovered between about 180 to 200 meters deep, which technically is the soil that belonged to the Neolithic period, it is believed that before being the city that we know today, Palmela was a fortified town that was used to be inhabited by the Romans, and the most incredible thing is that a Roman praetor lived here whose name was: "Áulio Cornelio Palma" and wow.... I more or less know where the name "Palmela" comes from...🤴👸💂♂️💂♀️
A team of Portuguese historians revealed that the Romans could not settle for a long time in the Palmela region because according to there is evidence that the Visigoths conquered it shortly after the Romans settled, later there are records that the Muslims also dominated the lands of Palmela for many Years even centuries, the Muslims were the ones who fortified the city of Palmela between the 8th and 9th centuries, after the Arab tribe began to grow in military power they added more fortifications to Palmela between the 10th and 12th centuries.💥😮😮
Many of the ancient societies from the Romans to the Visigoths learned to take advantage of the resources that nature offered them, for example this room that was built almost underground had a hole in the rocks that turned it into a water reserve chamber, when it rained the water entered through the opening in the roof and fell into earthen jars!💦💦
ABOUT THE CASTLE😜🌅🚙/ SOBRE EL CASTILLO🚩🚩
Between the years 1112-1185 one of the most important conquests of the country took place in Portugal since basically Don Alfonso managed to recover the territory that is currently the center of Portugal, including Lisbon, Almada and Sintra! when Alfonso's troops defeated the Arabs in 1147 they moved seeking refuge in Alcacer, but the story with the Muslims would not end here... Because after gathering and organizing their troops they managed to stay and retain the entire area to the south of the Tejo River. But once again it fell into the hands of the Christians who, in a war, the Portuguese managed to reconquer Palmela for the last time!😮😮
In the year 1186 it could be said that Palmela was already a consecrated city under the laws of the monarchy, and ceased to be only an area of military establishment and fortification, incredibly Palmela fell again under the domination of the Arabs in a brutal bloody battle, they They came from having conquered the south of Portugal and wanted to eliminate the Portuguese from the territory! Between the 12th and 13th century the Arabs had been expelled from the territory but wars would come that would change the course of the country! because now Palmela would have to endure looting, burning and fighting against the Castilian troops!😣😮
AN EVENT THAT WOULD MARK HISTORY😜🌅🚙/ UN SUCESO QUE MARCARIA LA HISTORIA🚩🚩
Between Portugal and Spain, the so-called "crisis period" was established in the timeline, this was at the end of the 13th century and it was the exact period when Spain and Portugal went to war, there is an event that was very interesting and that is that the " battle of the Atoleiros" was a defeat to the Spanish army by Nuno Pereira climbed to the top of the tower to create a large fire that would alert the army that was positioned in the castle of Lisbon.🤔😮
At one point in the Spanish attempt to conquer Palmela Castle only the Black Death would prevent the Spanish from continuing the struggle to settle in Palmela and it was all due to the Black Death! Later, in the 17th century, the castle received some improvements and restorations, but when the great earthquake hit Portugal, it was very destroyed, but in the face of that natural disaster, the castle of Palmela survives to this day!💥💥
As a last interesting fact, the castle is almost 300 meters high, currently there is a government office that has a tourist function, in addition to having a room that allows you to see the history of the castle in the 19th century as it was used as a "strategic base of radar" was a great experience because I learned a lot and had a lot of fun in this piece of Portuguese history!💥🤔
