Recently is there a new song relesed by Indonesian group band Weird Genius feat. Sara Fajira, entitled "Lathi" which become viral online. A challenge in Tictoc called Lathi Challenge emerged and made this song even more popular in Indonesia and Malaysia.
The song has a simple theme: Lathi which means tounge in Javanese Language, (a native local language in Indonesia) and in this context it refers to words. (the words that we say.)
The lyric is mostly in English, but a Javanese sentence is inserted at the reff parts.
Kowe ra iso mlayu saka kesalahan
Ajining diri ana ing lathi'
You can not run from your mistake a person respect is in his tounge (a person is respected because of he keep his words). I am not fluent in Javanese, but that's how I would explain the meaning of those words.
The song is about a toxic love relationship. The story is about someone who suffer and felt enchained by the relationship and how she finally got away from it.
There was actually NOT wrong or demonic with the lyrics. It is just plain story of a bad relationship. But why it is percieved as demonic ?
Probably because of the melody on the part where the lyrics into Javanese language. Or probably because of the video clip. In the video, when the singer had enough of the tourture and pain (of the bad relationship) her face turned fearsome.
The part where the singer face turned demonic was the part used as tictoc challenge. Many people, mostly girls joined the challenge. But later I found out also the challenge was also done proffesinally by artists.
It created quite a buzz for the song, now even many people knew the song. I knew the song from the tictoc challenge. Before the challenge, I did not even know about this group since it was relatively new.

While in Indonesia, the song has become very popular, in our neigbouring country Malaysia it become a controversial topic. The tictoc challenged is considered as a way of summoning demon hence it should be forbidden and the tictoc challnged should be stopped,
At the time I write this, the challenge is Indonesia's top trending in twitter.

Interesting song, I had never heard of it. Nor the challenge.
I don't think forbidding such a challenge is going to work. When things like this are forbidden it usually backfires and make it go viral around the world.
That's what I thought too. There are more people talking about it, and want to join the challenge. In the end, it makes the song become more popular.
