Recomendación: The Zookeeper's Wife 🍿 // Recommendation: The Zookeeper's Wife 🍿

Today I want to tell you about a movie I saw a few days ago: The Zookeeper's Wife. So unexpected, that it was not in my plans to see it. I even saw it on TV on Channel E! and learned about its broadcast that same day. I think I'm still a fan of movies broadcast on television because, although they are not recent releases, they allow me to discover some good movies that I didn't know about, as is the case with this movie.

Below you will read a description of the film from my perspective. Of course, the text is full of some spoilers, although I will try to tell things in a very general way. Anyway, I think it's a film that, even if you read what's going on, is worth watching.

The film is based on the true story of Jan and Antonina Żabiński, a couple who, together with their son, lived in Poland for the summer of 1939 (the date when the film's story begins). They owned a zoo which, according to the recreation, was quite large, had a great variety of animals (rabbits, elephants, hippopotamus, tigers, lions, monkeys, etc.) and was very frequented.

From the beginning we saw the love for the animals that this couple had, since they took good care of them, treated them with love and some even walked inside their house. This love was transmitted to us by the actors who worked at the zoo, as you can felt each of the next losses as your own.

As time goes by, they relate how the invasions of the country as a result of the Second World War took place and the mistreatment and abuse of power by the Germans towards the Jews became evident. It all begins with a bombing at the zoo in which many animals die and the facilities are badly damaged. Then, a group of German soldiers use the zoo as a base where they spend most of their day. In addition, Lutz, a Nazi zookeeper and the villain of the film, stay for a long time to the day on this zoo to conduct his experiments to return the species of an extinct animal.

Terminaron refugiando a aproximadamente 300 personas, incluyendo mujeres, niños y hombres.

In spite of this, when the couple found out what the Jews were living through, many of their friends being affected, they decided to start using the basement of their house as a refuge for several of these people, known and unknown. Thanks to several allies, this family shelters many people and then helps them escape from the basement by making, for example, changes in their looks to help them go unnoticed. They ended up sheltering approximately 300 people, including women, children and men.

The film shows how this family, including their son, put their beliefs first, their desire to help others in any way they can, even if it means risking their lives.

I would like to add some details read in Wikipedia along with my opinion:

  • The actors in this film were: Jessica Chastain as Antonina Żabiński, Johan Heldenbergh as Jan Żabiński and our villain Daniel Brühl as Lutz Heck. At first I didn't have much connection with the character of Jan Żabiński, I even thought that he was one of those characters that if he left, everything will be ok. However, when things start to get ugly, so to speak, this character shows himself as one of the most interested in helping all the Jews within his reach. On the other hand, this is the second time I see Daniel Brühl playing the role of the villain and he has a great talent for becoming unbearable.
  • Although in real life Lutz Heck did perform his experiments on animals, his relationship with Antonina is not as it is portrayed in the film. I suppose every story needs its villain, and I think the inclusion of this relationship symbolically demonstrated that the family had to make many sacrifices in order to keep this group of people they were hiding alive.
  • The film was released in 2017. As I had told you before, I did not know previously about this film, I do not know if this criterion indicates that it was popular or not in its time, but the truth is that it caught my attention because I like films where there is love for animals, and for having Jessica Chastain as the main character.
  • The Warsaw Zoo is still open to this day. This fills me with opposite emotions, as I would love to visit this place that was where hundred of people were able to save their lives, but it is also a memory of a dark time, a place where hundreds of people lived in animal cages and, although they were alive, they were not free.

In spite of being a film about the Holocaust, I believe that we must rescue its happy ending, which becomes much more special when we know that this happened in real life. The family Żabiński was an example of courage, altruism, sacrifice, togetherness, compassion and I think I lack positive words. In an era where you couldn't trust anyone, where trusting the wrong person could cost you your life, what this family did showed that human kindness still existed, that there will always be good people unconditionally, even though sometimes we don't think so, that there are people who can represent that light at the end of the tunnel.
