Christmas has an authentic and particular meaning for each person. Some of us consider it a beautiful, happy and fun holiday. However, there are those who do not necessarily like this time, and they must have their own reasons. Now, in general terms, it should be agreed that Christmas is one of the most special times of the year.
During the holiday season certain traditions are put into practice depending on each region; people prepare typical dishes, exchange gifts and decor their houses and environments with Christmas trees and nativity scenes; in short, a very festive and dynamic atmosphere is experienced.
La navidad tiene un sentido autentico y particular para cada persona. Hay quienes la consideramos una festividad bonita, alegre y divertida. Sin embargo, hay a quienes no necesariamente les agrada esta época, y han de tener sus propias razones. Ahora bien, en términos generales habría que convenir que la navidad es una de las épocas más especiales del año.
Durante la temporada decembrina se ponen en práctica ciertas tradiciones dependiendo de cada región; se preparan platillos típicos, se intercambian regalos, y se adoran las casas y los ambientes con árboles de navidad y pesebres; en fin, se experimenta un ambiente muy festivo y dinámico.
If we take a look at different countries of the world, we will find diverse and interesting customs. In countries with a Christian tradition, this celebration focuses on the birth of the baby Jesus. In Latin America, they usually celebrate rooster masses, where praises and Christmas carols are sung. In Venezuela in particular, we also play or listen to musical rhythms typical of this time such as parrandas and gaitas, along with the preparation of a special dinner for Christmas Day, which consists of Hallacas, chicken salad, baked pork leg and ham bread, accompanied with cream punch, sweets and fruits.
Si damos una mirada a diferentes países del mundo, nos encontraremos con diversas e interesantes costumbres. En los países con tradición cristiana, esta celebración se centra en el nacimiento del niño Jesús. En América Latina se suele celebrar las misas de gallo donde se cantan alabanzas y villancicos. En Venezuela particularmente, también toman auge ritmos musicales propios de esta época como las parrandas y gaitas, a la par de la preparación de una cena especial para el día de navidad, la cual consta de Hallacas, ensalada de pollo, pernil al horno y pan de jamón, acompañado con ponche de crema, dulces y frutas.
Meanwhile in North America, the commemorations start from Halloween, followed by Thanksgiving dinner, Black Friday, Christmas Eve and finally the New Year. The Jewish community celebrates the festival of luminaries better known as Hanukkah.
Mientras tanto en Norteamérica, las conmemoraciones inician desde el Halloween, seguido de la cena de Acción de Gracias, el viernes negro, la Noche Buena y finalmente el Nuevo Año. La comunidad de tradición judía celebra la fiesta de las luminarias mejor conocida como el Hanukkah.
In some countries in Asia and Africa, that were European colonies, they also celebrate Christmas, sharing with family and preparing special dinners with a variety of dishes and desserts. In the particular case of Japan, although it is not a country with a Christian tradition, on Christmas Eve, they usually prepare cakes, exchange gifts and go out to eat.
En algunos países de Asia y África, que fueron colonias europeas, también celebran la navidad, compartiendo en familia y preparando cenas especiales con diversidad de platos y postres. En el caso particular de Japón, aunque no es un país de tradición cristiana, el día de Noche Buena, acostumbran a preparar pasteles, intercambian regalos y van a comer fuera.
For me, Christmas means joy, sharing what we have with others, putting selfishness aside and coexist in unity. Regardless of how Christmas is celebrated in the different regions, the most significant thing, in my opinion, is to take advantage of this occasion to be with loved ones, showing them our affection and giving out the best wishes for harmony, happiness, but above all unconditional love for the neighbor.
Para mí, la navidad significa alegría, compartir lo que tenemos con los demás, dejar el egoísmo de lado y convivir en unidad. Independientemente de cómo se celebre la navidad en las diferentes regiones, lo más significativo, a mi parecer, es aprovechar esta ocasión para estar con los seres queridos, demostrándoles nuestro afecto y repartiendo los mejores deseos de armonía, felicidad, pero sobre todo amor incondicional por el prójimo.
