Happy week Hivers! Today I want to talk a little about the celebration and traditions related to the so-called Holy Week around the world. As we know, since last year, many public activities have been suspended or limited in order to prevent a further spread of the pandemic, but that is not a reason to deprive ourselves of knowing a little, as a general culture, about some of the most typical customs of this period.

¡Feliz semana Hivers!

Around early spring Easter is commemorated. In many countries of Christian tradition, this season is generally known as Holy Week or Greater Week; during these days the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth are commemorated. This tradition is celebrated in different ways depending on each country.

In countries and towns where Catholicism is official, such as Spain and Latin America, commemorations are held from the Friday prior to Holy Week (Council Friday). On Palm Sunday the celebration of the blessing of the palms takes place. Between Monday and Holy Saturday, there are masses and ecclesiastical activities in which the most religious devotees participate; Among these activities is the visit to 7 temples and fasts are also carried out, avoiding eating red meat. Finally, on Sunday the mass of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is celebrated. In the case of Venezuela, people carry out processions with images of saints and usually make dolls representing Judas the traitor to burn in the streets.

In Eastern European nations it is customary to decorate eggs and make special dinners. In Germany they usually prepare a seven herb soup and a lamb shaped pie. For their part, the Finns light bonfires to scare off evil spirits and prepare sweet dishes. In some Nordic countries the celebration of Easter is similar to Halloween, as children dress up as witches and ask for sweets in the neighborhood.

Jumping to the other side of the world, it strikes me that, in the Philippines, a country with the largest number of Catholics in Asia, the so-called Bloody Easter is held, in which the parishioners flagellate themselves until they bleed, with the purpose of imitating vividly the crucifixion of Christ.

The beginning of Easter is practically a sign of a new beginning, since in some parts of the world it coincides with the beginning of the flourishing spring season. I think that it is very important to preserve the ancestral traditions and customs of each people, but above all we need to keep faith and hope alive.
