Memorial Day in America

in GEMS4 years ago (edited)

The last Monday of May is Memorial Day in America.

Memorial Day in the United States is a day to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, which includes the Civil War, World War I, World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For decades, Memorial Day was observed on May 30, until Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May and also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

There are three Memorial Day traditions that are observed by many cities and towns across the United States.

The first and foremost American tradition during Memorial Day is to display the American Flag

The American flag can be displayed on all days, but in particular, it is flown on specific days of the year.

Long may Old Glory wave!

On Memorial Day, the flag should be hung at half-staff until noon, when it should be raised to the top of the staff.

A second tradition is the Memorial Day Parade.

Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C.

My town always hosts a Memorial Day parade every year, but not this year for obvious reasons.

I put together these photos taken from GettyImages.com of images of past U.S. Memorial Day Parades held in various parts of the country.

Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials.

As a girl scout in grade school, we were tasked with putting flags on headstones in the cemetery on Memorial day every year.

Early this morning, I visited the cemetery and offered prayers for those who died in wars, and most specifically for my great grandfather, grandfather, my Dad, my Mom, and my two brothers who all served in the military and have all passed away.

This is the area in my town's cemetery reserved for the fallen soldiers. There were only three headstones with the American flag on them.

Every year on the last Monday of May Memorial Day Weekend reminds us that our freedom isn’t for free. It’s the most appropriate time for remembering that the freedom we have today is the result of human dedication and sacrifice. Heroic gestures of American soldiers for our country’s honor will always be captured in our memory and Memorial Day posts.

On a lighter note, many people take weekend trips or throw parties and barbecues on the holiday. Memorial Day weekend is a long weekend comprising the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day and Memorial Day itself. For many Americans, it marks the beginning of summer.

Wow. Such an informative post filled with your personal experience. Both grandparents on my mother's side lie next to each other at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, San Diego. They served in the Navy during WW II, led long lives, and had lots of children. 😁

I hope you enjoy the rest of the day. May all their eternal souls rest in peace. 🇺🇲

Many don’t see any differences between such patriotic holidays as Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Armed Forces Day. Veterans Day and Armed Forces Day are days when we honor those people who either were serving in the U. S. military or doing it now. As for Memorial Day, it’s dedicated to those who have died in military service. Yet, soldiers and heroes never die... they live in our memories.
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a short prayer for the many who gave their lives for our beloved America! May they Rest in Peace.
Have a wonderful week ahead, my friend @inalittlewhile. Take care 🥰🌺🤙

You are so right @silversaver888 about how we owe our freedom to these heros. My dad served in WWII and was stationed in the South Pacific as a medic. He had polio as a child and was not physically fit for active duty, so they made him a medic. He also contracted malaria while serving. I vividly remember the 21 gun salute at his funeral.

Take care my sweet sis, and thank you for the reminder what today is really all about.🤗🤗😘🤗🤗💕🌸

WOW... another thing in common with us, sis! It is amazing. Yes, I know about Military Funeral Honors which was accord to each member of my family when they passed away. And I have four flags buried under boxes in storage. I have not gone to that storage for awhile now.
Do the same, my sweet sis @elizabthbit. Taka care 🥰🌺🤙and it's of love and hugs 🥰🌺🤙

With both your brothers that also served, passing on, Memorial day seems to have a special meaning to you beyond just patriotism. I'm sure I'd be feeling sad at the loss of my siblings especially if it were for such a higher and selfless cause.
Many Hugs Sis!

Sis, if I can help it, I do not want to think about it. I would have not survived losing my entire family without my sorority sisters around. All of them took me into their hearts and life, and were just there with me through it all. All are married, and I am an auntie to all their children. I am a godmother to each of their first child. I am also very blessed to have you in my social media life, my stacking sis!
Take care, my lovely sis @kerrislravenhill 🥰🌺🤙, lots of love and a million and one Hugs and Kisses 🤗💕💋!

I never knew you were supposed to fly the flag at half mast till noon on Memorial Day @silversaver888.
I put up a tall flag pole, I will remember that next time...
So sorry you have lost members of your family, both me and the Mrs have lost both Parents, and she her brother, it can be very hard.....
I am sure they are very proud of you!
Enjoy today my friend!🥰🥰😊

I am glad that I gave you some new information to you, my friend, @silvertop. I think that not many people know about that either. I always love flags in front of homes. You have a tall flag pole and you can actually do it half-mast. The pole brackets for home flag display have the two levels to hold the pole; the lower one is used for the half mast.
Have a great week, my friend and take care 🥰🌺🤙

Very good to know @silversaver888, I have new flags that I keep on hand, and it is time to take down the old flag. The Weather up here is so windy in the Winter, and the Mrs has been after me to take change the flag out.....😇
Have a lovely evening my friend!!!!😍😍😀
