Hoy 12 de agosto se cumplen 31 años de la publicación del álbum negro de Metallica, el denominado popularmente como “Black Album”.
Aunque personalmente no es mi disco favorito de la banda y considero que no se encuentra a la altura de "Master of Puppets" o de "Ride the Lightning", si le reconozco su calidad y su gran aportación a la historia del rock.
Today August 12th marks the 31st anniversary of the release of Metallica's black album, popularly known as the "Black Album".
Although personally it is not my favourite album by the band and I consider that it is not on the same level as "Master of Puppets" or "Ride the Lightning", I do recognise its quality and its great contribution to the history of rock.
Recuerdo haber descubierto a Metallica durante la gira Monsters of Rock del año 1988. Tocaron en Madrid como teloneros de Iron Maiden y junto a Helloween y Anthrax. Hasta ese momento había escuchado vagamente su trabajo y los veía como un grupo excesivamente duro y estruendoso. Pero mi sorpresa fue muy grande y me llamó la atención el poderío de su puesta en escena. Reconozco que fue el grupo que más me gustó aquel día a pesar de mi gran debilidad por los Maiden.
I remember discovering Metallica during the Monsters of Rock tour in 1988. They played in Madrid as opening act for Iron Maiden and alongside Helloween and Anthrax. Until then I had vaguely listened to their work and saw them as an excessively hard and thunderous band. But my surprise was very big and I was struck by the power of their staging. I admit that it was the band I liked the most that day, despite my great weakness for Maiden.
A partir de entonces comencé a seguirlos mucho más y a comprar toda su discografía existente hasta el momento. Años después y recién publicado el “Black Album” los vi de nuevo en otro Monsters of Rock, esta vez en Barcelona teloneando a AC/DC, mi banda favorita de toda la historia del rock. Fue un concierto raro pero fantástico al mismo tiempo. Ambas bandas dieron un grandísimo espectáculo, pero digo que fue raro porque era palpable la rivalidad entre los fans de uno y otro grupo; si eres de Metallica tenías que minimizar la actuación de AC/DC y viceversa, algo que me parece absolutamente ridículo.
From then on I started to follow them a lot more and to buy all their discography up to that moment. Years later and just released the "Black Album" I saw them again in another Monsters of Rock, this time in Barcelona opening for AC/DC, my favourite band in the history of rock. It was a rare concert but fantastic at the same time. Both bands gave a great show, but I say it was weird because the rivalry between the fans of both bands was palpable; if you were Metallica fans you had to minimize AC/DC's performance and vice versa, something I find absolutely ridiculous.
Al año siguiente los vi de nuevo en Madrid, esta vez como cabeza de cartel en su gira oficial junto a The Cult y Suicidal Tendencies. Concierto increíble, con Metallica en pleno apogeo. El "Black Album" había triunfado y las críticas eran demoledoramente buenas.
Todo el posterior trabajo de Metallica me parece cuando menos decepcionante por no ponerle otro calificativo. No los he vuelto a ver ni me ha interesado nada de lo que han hecho. Así que reconozco que para mi el “Black Album” supuso un punto de inflexión para la banda. Llegaron a lo más alto para hundirse irremediablemente a pesar de que hoy en día siguen contando con una impresionante legión de seguidores que siguen llenando estadios para verlos una y otra vez.
The following year I saw them again in Madrid, this time as headliners on their official tour with The Cult and Suicidal Tendencies. It was an incredible concert, with Metallica in full swing. The "Black Album" had triumphed and the reviews were devastatingly good.
All of Metallica's subsequent work seems to me to be disappointing to say the least. I haven't seen them again nor have I been interested in anything they've done. So I admit that for me the "Black Album" was a turning point for the band. They reached the top only to collapse irremediably, although today they still have an impressive legion of fans who continue to fill stadiums to see them time and time again.
Como curiosidades de este “Black Album” hay que reseñar que se tardó ni más ni menos que 10 meses en grabarse y que fue realizado en directo, con todos sus integrantes tocando al mismo tiempo en lugar de grabarse los instrumentos por separados y en pistas independientes.
A pesar de que todo el mundo lo llama "Black Album", el título real del disco es “Metallica”. James Hetfield era un fanático seguidor del director de cine italiano Sergio Leone, autor de los denominados spaghetti western. Leone utilizaba en sus películas la figura del “hombre sin nombre” personaje que solía interpretar Clint Eastwood. Así que a partir de esta idea Hetfield propuso que el albúm no tuviese nombre y que la portada fuese negra en homenaje al Black in Black de AC/DC cuyo disco también es totalmente negro. También surgió la idea de iniciar siempre sus conciertos con la intro de la película "El bueno, el feo y el malo" con banda sonora de Ennio Morricone, tradición que han mantenido hasta hoy en día.
As curiosities of this "Black Album" it is worth mentioning that it took no less than 10 months to record and that it was made live, with all the members playing at the same time instead of recording the instruments separately and on independent tracks.
Although everyone calls it the "Black Album", the actual title of the album is "Metallica". James Hetfield was a fanatical fan of Italian film director Sergio Leone, author of the so-called spaghetti westerns. Leone used the figure of the "man with no name" in his films, a character often played by Clint Eastwood. So from this idea Hetfield proposed that the album should have no name and that the cover should be black in homage to AC/DC's Black in Black, whose album is also completely black. They also came up with the idea of always starting their concerts with the intro of the film "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" with a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, a tradition they have maintained to this day.
