Your Top 3 Contest For Month - Favorite Video Games

in GEMS4 years ago

How is it already the 9th? Seems like June just arrived, then all of a sudden - boom, it's almost the deadline for the @yourtop3 contest over on the Hive platform.! And what a wicked cool, if extremely brain hurty, topic it is - this month we get to pick our top 3 favorite video games...which for me is right up there with narrowing down my three favorite books or movies....argh! 🤣

I briefly considered using the random picker thingy that I've used in the past, to make the decision for me, but instead I went with closing my eyes and pointing at the list on my screen the virtual games that had a significant impact on my actual life. So before I change my mind for the billionth time, here they are!

My Top 3 Favorite Video Games

Nomination 1 - Asteroids

REASON

Growing up, I enjoyed playing the arcade version of this, and I remember being ridiculously excited when my late father showed me the floppy disk with the word, "Asteroids" he'd written with a sharpie. I don't recall where he got it from - I have a vague recollection that one of his customers (he had a home security alarm business) gave it to him, but I can recall the sense of awe I felt when I saw a decent facsimile of the game appear on my dad's first home computer screen.

Since his business was at that time, literally a home security business (as in, he ran it out of our attic and garage), I had plenty of time to goof around with the game. In fact, Dad and I had many conversations about computers, video games, and the like while he worked. Oh, and for the record while he enjoyed Adventure and Chess, Asteroids became my favorite game to pass the time in between answering phone calls when I helped out in the office.

Nomination 2 - Myst

REASON

I've thought about this since the topic was announced, and I'm fairly certain that this is the game that turned me from a gaming "fan" to a "fanatic." Granted, I didn't buy any associated bling (was there even Myst bling? LOL!) or cosplay or anything, but soon after hubby & I bought our first home computer, he bought the game for me. As soon as I figured out how to play, I was hooked! I couldn't stop until I finally finished - which, given it was 1995 and I was also a first time mom, took me longer than I expected.

Now, all these years later, I don't even remember the outcome of the game, but memories of my late father are also tied up in this one. Not too long before his Alzheimer's diagnosis in '96, I remember showing him how Myst worked (in kind of a bittersweet bookend to Asteroids) and how amazed he was at the graphics, as well as the intricacy of the game play. And since Adventure was a favorite of his, he really enjoyed the short time he was able to play Myst when he and my mother visited, before he "went offline" in December 2001.

To this day, whenever I'm particularly impressed by some video game, I think to myself, "Hey Dad - can you believe how cool this is? Look how far we've come since ASCII!"

Nomination 3 - World of Warcraft

REASON

Flash forward almost a dozen years (and countless computers) later, and our three kidlets were discovering & loving video games too. I can't remember for certain which one discovered WoW, but I do know in short order, everyone in the house had an account, except me.

At the time, I was working on my first NaNoWriMo novel, and knowing how easily I could become obsessed distracted, I decided not to tempt myself. I eventually got an account and created a character, but since my helpers were mostly below the age of ten, I really didn't understand the draw of the game at first. In fact, I spent most of my early days wandering around Stormwind fishing, since I thought that was the entirety of the map! 🤣

Once hubby got involved, a family guild (or should I say guilds, since we had both Alliance and Horde toons) was formed, and we all spent lots of time playing, either together or with peeps we met online. While our family guild had only (with just a handful of exceptions over the years) the five of us, we all also belonged to other guilds.

Also, since we homeschooled, one of the family WoW playing rules was that any chatting, be it trade, guild, or other, had to be with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Who says learning is a pain when your parents are involved can't be fun?

There are my choices! Apologies to all of my other favorites, including Space Invaders, Wolfenstein, Halo, Serious Sam, Left 4 Dead, Solitaire, NFL Football (Intellivision), Dragon's Lair, Mahjong, Red Dead Redemption (original & prequel), Flyff (Fly For Fun), Fable, and Neopets - I still love you all too!

Also, while the prizes for this contest are limited to bloggers on the Hive blockchain, I figure there might be some WordPress (or other) bloggers who might want to share their faves too. Instead of offering crypto prizes like the @yourtop3 crew, I thought I’d offer a little social media exposure instead.

So if anyone wants to jump aboard and share your Top 3 Favorite Video Games , please feel free to drop a link to your own post (no time limit) in my comment section (along with your Twitter handle, if you have one), and I’ll do my best to take a peek and give it a tweet!

One last thing - a big thank you to the awesomesauce peeps behind this monthly crypto contest (now with the wicked awesomesauce addition of a Champions League!) @plantstoplanks, @nickyhavey, @foxyspirit, and @cheese4ead - you guys and gals ROCK!

See you all at the Dpoll & have a great month!

Hi dear I looked every day but streetstyle isnt here anymore. Maybe he will be later this month but I want to know are you taking the honors if he is not? We always had the Pre HivePud blog and the blog on the 1st to power up. We have that as an assignment for the ralliers in the redfishrally so I am keeping that up. We reward than for powering up. But the contest blog it self are you doing that this month?

Hey lovely lady! Yes, I've been looking for him too, but nothing yet. I already have an alarm set on my phone for Wednesday the 24th to put out a PUD announcement post, so yes, I'm planning to get it done if he still isn't around by then. Would you like me to include anything about the redfishrally assignment in the post too? I'm also making plans to spread the word on social media (like FB, LinkedIn and Twitter) to see if we can increase participation by shouting about it for the week before. And with all my preparations, I'm hoping that @streetstyle will pop up at the last moment and we can say, "No worries - we've got it covered!"

Great because we ladies got it covered. Yes please Discord the terminal will have as many members and redfishralliers do a power up blog and power up on the 1st to join in the winning of some prizes. So gladly. Let me know if you need names or info at the end of the month.

Nice selections! When WoW first came out I started playing on day 1, such a fun game, but eventually I got bored with it, too much to do, too little time...

Oh the floppy disk games... LOVE IT! Asteroids is definitely a classic and remember the higher levels would require so much dexterity to avoid them... needed some serious training lol!

I never came across Myst or played World of Warcraft but can fully appreciate the feeling of "better graphics" in those days, it was like a new world opening up!

Good luck in the contest!

Hey, it’s Q here - the mascot of the Your Top 3 Contest - just swinging by to say thanks for these awesome suggestions for our contest this month! I've given you an upvote and logged your nominations, ready for the dpoll - keep an eye on my blog for the dpoll post!

Make sure you set your post payout to 50/50. You keep the HP and then transfer the HIVE and/or HBD (whichever is paid out at the time) to @yourtop3 with a link to your blog post entry in the transfer memo. This is the minimum entry fee, but you can add as much as you like to it! The more you add, the more you can win. There is no maximum entry fee.

Not sure how to find your post payout? Look in your Hive Wallet under Author Rewards to find the exact payout for your post. In the example below you would send the 0.011 HBD and 6.441 HIVE over to the @yourtop3 account as your entry fee. I take it from there and convert all of the prize pool to SBD for easy prize distribution at the end of the month!

Sliding in with time to spare! ;) As always, I love the back stories just as much as the actual choices. Well, in this case more since as par for the course this month, I haven't played any of these! I'm sure if my family had been into it like yours then maybe I would have played more of the choices. As I told Fiona, though, we were a deck of cards kind of family. At least with my grandmother. Though to be fair, even she had her portable digital solitaire game that she used in her recliner when her hands started bothering her enough to not want to shuffle cards all of the time! I still remember playing on the first tiny little screen. As time went on every few years we would upgrade her to the latest offering, with bigger screens and buttons. Oh boy, sorry for the little trip down memory lane on your post. I'm sure the games themselves were great, so hopefully they'll score well in the polls! :)

I miss playing arcades. I spent so much money and time playing Mortal Kombat at the arcades, slamming those buttons to pieces! It was an awesome place to gather with other friends and compete in all sorts of games, why don't they still have those today? Maybe they do in some places but not here, not anymore. So sad.

Im happy you chose WOW. That is a huge game and even though I didn't get into it, I still respect it as a game and the style.

Thank you for joining in this round my friend!

A great set of games here! Myst is something that I rarely hear about, and one that I'm intrigued to play. I do enjoy the calming atmosphere of running around, casually solving puzzles :-D

Never really got into games as such, did pin-ball on a machine in a local cafe, did space invaders in another part of town years later and that was the sum total of gaming.

Both my sons are ardent gamers. alas I do not have time nor patience. Enjoyed reading why certain games appealed to you over the years.

Great post @traciyork and impeccable timing as usual.

I love your gaming history. Very cool. All started off by your father which is similar to my history too.

Asteroids is awesome. I've played it on so many different platforms and it's always a good game. Playability is second to none. This is true retro gaming. I've never played Myst but it sounds right up my street. I too love the change up of puzzle/mystery games in beautifully crafted settings.

I have never given WoW a go. It sounds like the sort of time draining, soul dominating experience that would hook me right in. I'll skip it whilst I have the will power.

Great job and best of luck.
