A Goal to gift myself a Laptop using HIVE!

in GEMS4 years ago

An idea popped into my mind today noon when I was trying to work on my laptop and realised that it was actually slowing down my work.

The idea was to actively post in Hive community for the next three months continuously and earn enough Hive coins to be able to gift myself with a laptop for my birthday in August.

My work on laptop mostly involves editing travel videos for my channel WandererOnwheels and also create content for HIVE.

My current laptop Dell Studio 15 which is over 11 years old is not able to handle even the most basic functions. It is having me wait for hours for any application to open, let alone work on that application.

The laptop I'm currently aiming for is Dell XPS 15 7590 which is among the top of the line laptops from Dell. It is rigged with all the top spec hardware and also comes with a sleek design.

I wont get into the details of the specs. I might even consider some other laptop options depending on how much I'm actually able to save during this time but the goal is XPS 15.

It costs about INR 1,64,000 which is approximately 2165 USD. So in 3 months, being able to save 2165 USD on Hive seems very difficult but it's not impossible.

The inspiration is this Paulo Coelho quote which goes to say- "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."

This is how the Dell XPS 15 looks:

Beautiful innit?

Here's a couple of photos of my old laptop which has served me well over the past:

The fact that it proudly flaunts a Windows Vista sticker should tell you how old it is. 😂
And it came with a Core 2 Duo processor which was the top model of its time like the i9 is now.

Can you see that little blue circle on the screen? That's the circle which tells you its time to hit the reset button when the laptop stops responding to any of your commands.

Yup that blue circle. So beautiful it is... yet so annoying. Can't really blame the laptop as its grown old now and has served me well in its prime years.

My question for you, reader is how long do you keep a laptop before replacing it with a new one?

We in India have this habit of extracting the full juice out of something before discarding/replacing it. Making the most of any resources we have.

No wonder we are able to build a rocket to Mars with the budget of a Hollywood Movie! 😂🤣

I would love it if you guys could support me with this and help me achieve this goal.

I'm hoping for the best.

Cheers!

I still have and old eeepc running on Linux. The battery is dead, but for writing and web browsing it runs good enough.

I say yours could work for more time... The problem is that Windows OS. If you install some Linux distro it will be like day and night. I promise.

Have a great day and greetings from Mexico.

Heyy! Thanks for the suggestion. Currently I'm planning on formatting this and installing Windows 10. I'll see if that works to make it a little better.

I would get a MacBook or MacBook Pro which is made for video editing.

Even though I have a Windows machine currently, my next one will be a Mac as they don't suffer from the over 1 MILLION viruses targeting Microsoft's OS.

Good luck! :)

I find mac OS kinda complicated as I'm not familiar with it and they are not compatible in many ways to windows pc. That's why I prefer sticking to a familiar territory. That being said, I'll check out some reviews of Macbooks. Maybe that will change my mind.
Thanks!

You can simply make anything possible. I remember you achieved your goal to steemfest 3 and succesfully made it there....so getting into this goal of a new laptoo won't lag behind....all the best dear...

Thank you so much bro! @steemflow

I tend to keep things a long time but may replace something before it’s reached the end. Depends on use. Quite often I hand down older stuff to my kids.

The XPS range is fantastic! I grabbed an XPS 13, 2 or 3 years ago (9350 if I remember correctly). Fantastic solid build quality and they perform amazingly well. No hint of slow down yet although it has been rebuilt several times. I use it for work and pleasure and it handles everything brilliantly.

Only annoyance is where the webcam is located - bottom left of the screen. I’m guessing the reason is to have a frameless screen but I’d rather have it at the top as usual.

Great plan and best of luck!

Hahaha! That's a good idea to give it to kids... they'll enjoy playing with it. I remember when I was a kid and my dad used to give me old calculators and digital phone books, I used to love it... especially when a lot of young kids didnt have them. Gave you a cool factor.
What do you use the XPS13 for? Have you tried video editing on it? Or any heavy softwares? If so, how does it perform?
I wouldn't mind the webcam position since I dont really use it much.
Thanks for you inputs!! :)

I've not tried video editing but have used Lightroom and Photoshop for photographic work flow and it seems to cope with it all fine.
