Let's talk a little about music

in GEMS3 years ago (edited)

It is true that artists are the most influential influencers, there are some famous names in both music and film. It is very difficult to separate who makes what and how much money people are making.

Especially rare that musicians do not make money on their own. We have social networking and everything is available and you can monetize. It's easier to be a manager if you know a lot about music and making videos. You can be a manager without knowing anything, you can make people think you know everything about music.

I think we have an incredibly good industry, I hope that in 10 years we will have the same problem as in the industry of the 90s, where everyone makes their fortune in the media and some of them did it without any effort.

Are those kinds of artists and groups that have emerged in recent years making enough money to support your next project?

I think they are earning a lot thanks to the Internet. I mean, I think with YouTube if you make a record and upload it for free, people are going to have to tell you, "Oh, this is a good song. They're going to be like, "Oh, I'll be interested," "Hey, I've seen this thing, and I like that video.

You can do your own promotion. With YouTube you get the highest quality you will get. You can monetize your videos on a level you never could on your own record label. YouTube is very open and you can make money with other artists if you have music.

As a side note, as a rule, every time a new artist of the genre comes along, the same question appears, "Who the hell cares what kind of music they make, or who they are? The fact is that the music world is an industry and people like the fact that we are willing to spend money on it. Being popular on the Internet is just one piece of the puzzle that has to be covered to get a living wage. The other (and possibly more important) aspect is creating something that people want to buy.

I do agree with you, the wide spread use of Internet, all the services available, including social media and all sort of video platforms, is an opportunity for musicians and artist to monetise their work without using all sorts of middlemen who take large part of the total revenues.

That said, what I also read a lot at HIVE (and other platform where people talk about musicians taking own control and cutting out middlemen), is that many believe (or at least let me believe through their posts) they they dont have to do a lot to become popular enough to be able to afford a living. Here is where in my opinion, these musicians are wrong. Yes, FB, Insta, HIVE, YT, 3Speak and all other video platforms and social networks provide tools to the artists to self promote and self sell. However, millions of other artists are around, and when all of them do the same, how will you stand out of the crowd? Most artists I know are far from business people, they simply want to create music, they dont know how to drive adoption of their work, and even when they know, they dont want to spend time on it. Added to that, the music industry is so fragmented and distributed, it very very hard to get the right contacts for the next gig and all. Thats one of the reasons why artists pay bookers, pay managers, get in contract with labels and what not. I dont foresee a different future for artists in the digital space. When an artists want to make enough money to afford a decent life, the artists will very likely require to pay others to do some to more of all the business tasks to get enough traction for the artists, whatever these artists want to achieve (production only, gigs, etc). And in the end, there is nothing wrong with that. Any product (music, a song is a product) uses many different brains and hands to get the product marketed and sold.
