I got a comment on my post about the infighting that is going on at ProofofBrain.io that made me think back to a post I had written about using SEO to help LeoFinance.
The Comment
@yintercept commented that tag spam is causing sites to do poorly in Google's search rankings. I read his post and agree with it to a large degree. Basically his argument is using multiple tribal tags means the content is going to be repeated on multiple websites (tribal websites) and Google is applying a penalty to the sites rankings due to duplicate content.
Duplicate Content and Google
@yintercept is absolutely right that Google does not like duplicate content. But based on Google's statements, it isn't that sites get penalized for duplicate content, it is that they only show the highest ranking duplicate.
So that means all the tribes and other front ends (Peakd, Ececeny) are in competition with each other to be the highest ranked page for any duplicate material.
So Who Is Winning? And Who Has a Problem?
One quick way to see which front end is winning the HIVE content war is to do a Google search to see how many pages are indexed. It is hard to find the page rank of a site nowdays, but one way to estimate it is to see how many pages a site has indexed. The higher the overall page rank of a site, the higher the number of pages they will index (assuming they have more pages than Google will index).
ProofofBrian.io
For "site:proofofbrain.io" there are around 6,000 pages indexed. That isn't bad for a new(ish) site at all.
LeoFinance
For "site:leofinance.io" there are a very respectable 38,000 pages.
Hive.Blog
For "
Ecency
For "site:ecency.com" 871,000 pages indexed. That is also very impressive.
PeakD
Finally, lets look at "site:peakd.com". 1.9 MILLION PAGES INDEXED!
We Have Found The Problem
So yes, all the tribes have a major Google problem. And that problem is the 8 hundred pound gorrilla in the room - PeakD.com.
PeakD must be what used to be around a PR 8 site to have that many pages cached. I'd guess ProofofBrain is in the 2-3 range with just 6000+ pages ranked. LeoFinance is probably a 3-5. Hive.Blog and Ecency around a 5-7.
It isn't quite as simple as the higher the page rank of the site, the higher the page will be rated. Niche sites like LeoFinance should have some advantage with their nitch topics.
But especially for generic tribes, it is going to be next to impossible to rank well because PeakD is just going to out rank you and Google won't show your duplicate content.
Is There Any Hope?
There are certainly things that can be done to help ProofofBrain improve its site rankings.
Add Links To ProofofBrain Pages In Your Links And Comments
The great thing about having PeakD (and other tribes) show all of your content is you can gleen some of their page rank to give to ProofofBrain. Every link that points back to ProofofBrain gives ProofofBrain a bit more page rank.
Better yet, it gives the specific page you link to a big advantage in the battle for duplicate content. Now that post on Proofofbrain has links pointing to it from all the tribes and front ends giving it a big advantage in the duplicate content war.
Add Links To ProofofBrain Pages On non-Hive Sites
Same as above, but on sites like Medium or Reddit. Again, each link from those sites helps increase the overall site page rank increase and gives that specific linked page a boost.
Minimize Links To Competing Tribes
It is a dog eat dog world out there so sometimes you need to play rough. Linking to other tribal pages give those tribes a boost. If that isn't what you want to do, then don't do it.
But there are times and ways to link to other tribes that are benificial, but in general the less of your page rank you give to your competition the better.
Hope This Helps Clear Up Some Misconceptions
So tag spam isn't to blame for any of the tribes having poor Google rankings. Tribes are just going to have a hard time competing with PeakD. But we can all do a few easy things to help out our favorite tribe, be it proofofbrain or blogtoken.io

It makes sense to me because when I didn't know about HIVE (came from splinterlands), I generally got PeakD posts as my the top ranking results.

It used to be when ever I would search for how to do things on HIVE I would find steemit pages. They have 2.9 million pages indexed. Yikes!

I wrote my post this morning trying to be more mindful of the backlinks that I was using. I haven't done that in the past. In fact, I didn't really use them in the past. I'd like to change that to give my content more visibility.
