Gamification: How to Hold Our Increasingly Short Attention Spans!

Whether we are willing to admit it or not, most of us like to compare and to see our name in print in some context of our social circles.

"Ranking" is one of the most broadly used aspects of social interaction.

It's not necessarily a negative thing, though... and far removed — and more subtle — than the classic stereotype of "keeping up with the Joneses," or wanting to "rule the world."

The Hive ecosystem is, of course, one big game!

It's filled with a myriad opportunities to become part of that "ranking" process, and that's often what keeps us interested. We live in a world where it feels like our spans of attention get shorter and shorter... so the challenge for community builders is to find ways to hold our forever diminishing spans of attention!

Whereas I definitely do enjoy many of the purely social spacts of being part of Hivelandia, I'll also be the first to admit that it is often the gamification aspects that keep me coming back, on a regular basis... keeps me interested in finding something worthy to pu in my next blog post.

Part of what makes gamification such a valuable tool is that it had tremendous pulling power, even when you are not directly offering to pay people for taking some action.

It might be a "hard sell" to die-hard money seekers, but many of the "ranking features" we have here in Hivelandia are not directly about financial rewards.

We could start simply with building our Hive Power. Sure, there's an underlying financial incentive... but the game of building the biggest stake is about keeping your stake, not about turning it into cash money! Same holds true for Hive's 100's of offshoot communities.

Of course, part of our ecosystem is also about actual games, and there the objective is winning, as well. And I'm sure more than a few people have checked their Rep. score from time to time, and perhaps have had a look at HiveBuzz to see "where they stand." I know I certainly have!

Halogen lamps can be a pretty good substitute for sunny spots!

But what really "makes it" for me is our variety of level 2 communities because they allow small users who don't have a lot of influence to move up in the rankings fairly readily.

And there are so many to pick from that you can easily find something that aligns with your interests! And that's a pretty cool thing!

And it definitely holds my short little span of attention!

Hive has communities that are active and reward engagement and content. This spirals as the price of Hive and HBD becomes fun to play with. Cashing out is not really an option at this point in the game.
