Have you heard the complete cycle of Bachianas Brasileiras by Heitor Villa-Lobos ?!

They are a series of nine sets of works written between 1930 and 1945 for different formations. In general lines in these collections, the composer sought to mix his folk-inspired melodies (except the Bachiana Prelude n4) with the pre-classical forms typical of the Baroque period, in which the name is a tribute to the greatest exponent of this period, J. S. Bach.

One of my favorite records is the recording of the “Nashville Symphony Orchestra” released by Naxos in 2005 as a triple CD. Here the record of Bachiana n4 originally written for solo piano, is presented in its version orchestrated by the composer himself in 1941. Available for listening on all digital platforms.

Personally my favorite Bachiana is number 6, from 1938 written for flute and bassoon, in two movements, “Ária (Choro) - Largo” and “Fantasia - Allegro”, a relatively short work of contrapuntal character, which contrasts with lyricism from Bachiana 5, for soprano and eight cellos, and with the grandeur of Bachiana n7 for orchestra.

And you, have a favorite? Write in the comments

Hope you enjoy
A great hug
