Pick One, Throw Other

Make your decision, and stand by it.

You can't chose everything. You can't be everywhere. You can't win every time.

The word decision means you cut off the alternate options. When you chose one thing, you are turning away from all the other options.

There is a lot of hype around splinterlands now. Last year, I chose to invest in dcity instead of splinterlands game.

While the value of a lot of splinterlands cards is 5x now, the value of my dcity investment is slowly decreasing.

I am optimisitic about the future of both games and the whole crypto gaming.

But the thing is, there is always opportunity cost.

When you decide to invest your money in cryptocurrency, you can't invest the same money in stocks, or on yourself, or on a vacation.

Sure, people who have unlimited money can divide their investment. But they can't invest their time in 10 different things.

Everyone has constraints. Usually people have constraints of time and money.

When you chose to invest in one thing, because of the opportunity cost, you are chosing one thing over the other.

Pushing yourself in work means you are choosing to spend more time and energy at work, and less with your family.

Being more focused on family means you have to cut some energy and focus from your work, and direct it towards your family.

Maybe you feel like you can manage it all. But it's difficult for most people.

Decisions, small or big, always have an opportunity cost.

And that's why making decisions is so hard. It's hard to be dedicated to one thing for years, sometimes for a lifetime.

Along with an opportunity cost, a decision involves commitment, risk and uncertainty.

Suppose, you are writing on hive for five years, and one day it all goes down. It's a risk. Investing in crypto is a risk. Investing in stocks is also a risk.

Not investing in anything at all is also a risk.

To make the right decision, you have to look at your long term plan to understand and see clearly what's important for you.

Set your priorities straight. Pick one thing, and drop others.

That's why, it's better to focus on less but important things. Things that matter to you.

Focus on Less Things

There is a common notion that if you set your mind on something you truly want, you can achieve it. But that doesn't work.

To be really successful at work, to achieve remarkable results, you have to be devoted to your work.

You have to be extraordinary in your work ethics. You have to be insane to a level.

When you focus it all on your work, you lose interest in other things, like socialization, friends, hobbies, weekend enjoyment, sometimes family time.

However, when you try to have it all, your focus will be shared between 10 different things.

If you are focused on a couple of dozen things, you are not focused at all.

To succeed in one thing, you have to invest time and energy. Be patient. Figure out new plans and work on new strategies.
Most important of all, you should have a clear vision about it.

Otherwise, your interest will slowly fade away.

A new relationship is always exciting. A new project idea is always thrilling.

When you start a new project, the excitement of doing something novel keeps you at it for a long time.

But once you do something for a while, you will be hit with reality. And when you continue to do it for years, you understand what it takes to keep things going.

It becomes boring and mundane. No more thrill and excitement.

It's easy to drift.

And if you don't pay attention on what you are doing daily, your life will absolutely drift in a direction you won't be able to control.

Once the excitement wanes off, you will need clear understanding of why you are doing something to keep at it.

You have to consistently invest your time and efforts to keep your motivation up.

Set your priorities right

I think people who suffer in their life and while doing their work, don't have a clear understanding of their priorities.

Most people can define their priorities in a vague way. Usually in a mixture of three to five words, like money, family, health, happiness, and comfort.

But they don't have a clear understanding of what they prefer over what. And that's why they are always so confused.

If you can't clearly specify what you want, you will start looking at what others have. Others priority will become your priority.

And that will make you miserable.

It's simple. If you don't get your priorities sorted out, your life will tear itself apart.

Clearly defined priorities gives you a purpose.

Whenever I look at people who work 10 hours a day earning minimum wages, but with a big smile on their face, I question myself. What are they up to. What have they found?

I am sure they are not living in a disillusion. Hopefully, they have set straight their priorities.

It doesn't matter whether you chose more money or more time, or more freedom. The only thing that matters is you know what you want.

Clearly, workaholics have a priority to work more. And people who chose less money but more time with their family have family as their priority.

Athletes have priority to workout daily.

Anyone who clearly understand what he wants, will live happily with his choices, even if it sounds absurd to others.

You will be happy to sacrifice other things for the sake of your priority.

However, if you are not completely clear about what matters to you and why you have to push yourself forward in that direction, daily. You will be like a ship in an ocean without a compass or a strong wind. You will be directionless, slowly drifting into abyss.

There will always be hurdles. Obstacles. So, set your priorities straight before committing to something for long term. Do it with a complete rookie mindset. You will be able to pull all sorts of creative energies to do mundane things daily.

Nice one! Opportunity cost is a concept we all must understand. I learnt it in my MBA and at that time didn't realize how important it was. But now, I relate it to almost everything I do. If I plan a vacation, what are the things I'm giving or If I want to but something for my house, what are the other things I have to pause for now. Happens all the time with me.

True. I was thinking about the opportunity cost. Clearly, spending and investing time on hive means we are missing on something else.

But we make our decisions and stand by it. And hopefully it will pay off nicely in the future😎
