It's the 7-Day Countdown
New posts gain earnings the first 168 hours after they're published-- 7 days. After that, any upvotes made will generate error messages. Good or bad, it's during the first 7 days when authors can earn for content and curators earn for upvotes. If we catch a post 169 hours after it's posted, no one gets anything beyond useful content.

Engagement should be high during the first 7 days, and in many cases that's true. However, after 7 days engagement tends to fall off the cliff and posts make the long journey into Whatwasthat Land--
What was that post about again? I know it was posted 20 days ago.
What Can We Do Now?
Commenting on older posts is rewarding in the human sense, even if rewards for author and commenter are 0.00000000. It feels as if we should do more to reward older posts. There are 4 ways I can think of to do "more" for them:
- Reblog/Re-Hive;
- Send Gift Points;
- Send Wallet Money;
- Send Engagement Tokens
Reblog/Re-Hive
I have to confess that I hadn't understood the true value of reblogging or re-Hiving a post until I typed that list above. Whether there are earnings or not for the act of reblogging, it's a way for a post's author to gain visibility beyond the 7-day earning window. It's also a way for you to become known to authors you follow or to anyone whose post you chose to reblog. It's still a win-win situation even if no rewards are involved.
Send Gift Points
If your front-end allows it, send the author a gift of Points. When I use #Ecency to engage with a post, I can comment at any time and I can send a gift of Ecency Points at any time. Even D.Buzz let's you "tip" the author of a buzz. Depending on the front-end you use, you may be able to do something similar.
Send Wallet Money
It doesn't get more gift-y than sending someone money straight from your wallet to theirs. You can use the front-end of your choice to send HIVE to other Hivers. If you want your gift to be in Layer 2 Tokens, Hive Engine (or anything which accesses your wallet) is the way to go. Just make sure the gift is worthwhile given what's in your wallet.
Also, if you have Layer 2 tokens you don't want but you know someone who's keen on them, send those as a gift. A few of these tokens fall into the Engagement Token category. Some of these are harder to acquire than others, so it would be like found money to the person receiving your unwanted Engagement Tokens as a gift.
Send Engagement Tokens
We've seen comments and replies sent by bots saying they sent someone a token on behalf of someone else. These bots are invoked when the "!" is placed before the symbol of the engagement token. Many bots exist which do this, but the most common ones I've seen are for PIZZA, BEER, and LUV.
To use one of those bots, you have to qualify to do so. This means you need to have in your wallet some minimum quantity of the engagement token in question. For the engagement tokens I mentioned earlier, here is a table showing relevant details:

Having those minimum quantities lets you use the "!" in a comment or reply to send to an author. When the "!" is used, it sends a token from its pool of staked tokens; you still retain the amount that's in your wallet.

How To Acquire Engagement Tokens
Short of spending money at the DEX to acquire Engagement Tokens-- and there are more I don't even know about-- the only way a new Hiver can acquire them is by accumulating those which come your way. It could be from a bot, or it could be from a benefactor who knows of your intesrest in the particular Engagement Token.
If your upvote is still close to either end of the dusting threshold (whether you're a new Hiver or not), the Engagement Token you send may be more valuable at that moment.
Conclusions
Sending Engagement Tokens is a great way to show support for an author when a post is older than 7 days and makes its way to Whatwasthat Land.
While feedback is appreciated, using Engagement Tokens for older posts does for them what upvotes do for content younger than 168 hours (7 days).
