Fungi Friday: REVIEW: Fantastic Fungi (2019): Fanfungitastic!

I'd like these mushrooms waiting for me in my kitchen!

That's a lot of fungi in your title. Deal with it 😎

A documentary film directed by Louie Schwartzberg and narrated by Brie Larson showing us the wonderful aspects of fungi.

We receive a nice introduction to what fungi are and their role in the world. Fungi exists in everything, is found everywhere and is even inside us as the narrator mentions. Nature is all around us but we may not know how to communicate with it. They know how communicate among themselves while we watch in awe.

You're a pretty one, I mean many.

The documentary takes us through the many different uses of mushrooms and we delve into the areas of environmental uses such as cleaning up oil spills, potentially regrowing neural pathways with those afflicted with dementia and helping those with severe anxiety or even ptsd.

There are several video clips from TED talks explaining the differing benefits not only to ourselves but the world as a whole. As with any documentary you will have a lot of talking heads, this is to be expected. I was a little surprised hearing people pronouncing the word fungi, some with a soft or a hard G sound. You usually hear one or the other but not both.

New life sprouts from the ground.

The tree huggers were out in full force as to be expected but nothing over the top. We delved back to the beginning of time and also the 1960s when dealing with everybody's favorite magic mushrooms. At points we had some nice trippy colorful moments of visuals straight out of a art house film. Spirituality is a subject this is breached gracefully and goes hand in hand during this segment. There are some very personal stories in regards to mushrooms and how they have had a profound effect on the lives of those after consuming a single dose. This in tandem with a commentary on western medicinal use or usual lack thereof was interesting to hear. Some individuals were given literal death sentences and straying outside the traditional medicinal avenues helped them in their time of need. There's no preaching, simply their own personal experiences and that was something I commend. Sometimes it doesn't go this way and will pull me right of the experience, not here thankfully.

Is this a reference to the horn of plenty in fungi form?

There was also mention of pandemics of the past with fungi being used as a means to understand and combat these situations. This film was released in 2019 so I figure filming must have been done in pre-pandemic times. They didn't touch on our current situation even though it alludes to mushrooms and fungi paying a large role combating previous world issues such as this.

Wow, look at these.

The evolution of man and the expansion of the size of the human brain to three times it's normal size was proposed in part to fungi early man would consume. The experiences brought forth by the mushroom supposedly aided in literal mind expansion. There are some interesting sequences here showing life pre-man and what the world would have looked like in this period of time.

Penicillin made an appearance as it should in this documentary suggesting that the Allies had a huge advantage during World War 2 due to its usage. I can't argue with that.

These mushroom stones are a fascinating piece of art.

Mushroom stones from Mayan cultures were brought forth and were apparently a large part of their culture. Worshiped and used as predictors of the future among varying other aspects. Fascinating and something I've never known. They were big mushroom lovers according to this documentary.

Last but not least we're left with a new generation of fungi hunters and what this all means to them. Personal stories abound with the different ways fungi have touched the lives of those on film. They're regular people like you and I that have been bitten by the mushroom bug.

I wonder where this hashtag came from? Oh right, I added it. The wait is worth it!

Time-lapse filming abounds and is absolutely fascinating. I don't see very many different types of mushrooms in my travels. Watching these grow before your eyes is a real treat.

The musical score is standard nature documentary type music. Piano, strings and hushed vocals. Nothing that was greatly overwhelming and thankfully nothing that draws you out of the moment.

There are a few cg sections illustrating the growth of mycelium and its purpose in the forest. Everything is done tastefully that helps emphasize what is being spoken of on film.

This is a type of shot I'm confident I could capture. I only need a willing subject.

Overall, this is worth the watch. I learned many new things in a brisk 80 minute documentary film format. The talking heads were kept in check while focusing your attention on differing subjects without lingering too long on any single subject. The director treated the audience with respect and didn't waste anybody's time. My attention was held and I think it will for you too.

We get a good overview of what fungi provides the world and its many practical benefits. The message is clear. Fungi and nature preservation is paramount in helping the world progress and combat anything that is put in our path. The documentary leaves us on a positive note and that's all we can ask for in this interesting journey into nature and fungi in general.

A few more screen captures of fungi I'll never run across.

This looks like a skirt.

Hello and welcome to the world. Nice to meet you.

Orange looking fungi. I haven't seen this type before.

013.png

With gills like this I might mistake you for a fish. Beautiful!

Bioluminescent fungi otherwise known as "Glow in the Dark" mushrooms. Nature is amazing.

Thanks for the read 🙂
