The "Quarantine Coffee"

Hello everyone in this community. This is my first ever post here, thanks to @galenkp's posting contest on Coffee and Coffee Shop Moments I got to know about this community. For those still unaware of this the contest post can be found here. Read about it and try catching up with a post about the topic. There's still a little over a few hours left before the contest closes.

In 2020, that's last year, the whole world felt the effects of the pandemic that was Covid19. Practically every country initiated some form of lockdown or quarantine to prevent the spread of the virus. Most people were confined in their homes and only allowed to go out to buy food and medicines. The terms WFH (Work From Home) and skeleton force and face masks became the bywords that most people followed and lived with. It was also during this time that malls, shopping centers, restaurants and coffee shops had to stop operations and only supermarkets and drugstores were open. As a result, a lot of establishments were forced to close. Those that did not had to let go of staff and help just to keep afloat. Here in our city, at the start of our Enhanced Community Quarantine, the place was a virtual ghost town. Hardly anyone was outside. Almost everyone stayed inside their homes.

Can you imagine what this could do to someone who regularly goes to a coffee shop, say Starbucks? When someone realizes that he cannot have that Caffe Latte or Latte Macchiato to start his day?

It was during this time that a particular coffee beverage became famous and was known as the "Quarantine Coffee." This coffee, also known as whipped coffee, dominated social media feeds in March 2020 while many quarantined themselves at home during the coronavirus pandemic. The whipped coffee caught on among Korean YouTubers and then eventually became a worldwide trend online. I am talking about the Dalgona Coffee.

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona Coffee is a DIY coffee trend that originated from South Korea. Not only is it visually attractive. It is also a delicious treat that is so easy to make. It became a viral trend in the internet probably because people miss their regular Starbucks coffee because of the lockdowns and quarantines in most places in the world. For want of a special coffee, one that is so easy to make, the Dalgona Coffee zeroed in on a need that craved to be satisfied.

And it is so easy to make. Here are the ingredients you will need.

2tbsp coffee granules
2tbsp sugar
2tbsp hot water
200ml milk
4-5 pcs ice cubes

Procedure:
Pour coffee, hot water and sugar in a bowl.

No need for special coffee. Just the ordinary instant coffee such as this famous brand in our country will do.

Whisk together or use a hand mixer until it thickens and becomes foamy.

Afterwards, pour the ice cubes and cold milk in a glass and top with the coffee foam by scooping it with an ordinary spoon or a spatula.
And voila!

Before drinking, mix the milk and ice with the thickened coffee. Before you know it that tall glass will all be gone before you know it.

Burp. Deeelicious.

Wow - I had no idea about this trend! Amazing what lockdown made - or forced - people to do!

It was my son who discovered this and told me about it. He used to work for Manga Eoshokan Cafe, a Japanese comic library coffee shop. He avidly follows coffee trends, especially during the height of the lockdown. You're absolutely correct. The lockdown had caused some really amazing creations.

Thanks for visiting. Appreciate your comment very much 🥰
