How can the taste of coffee be consistent in each of your cups?

Hi Hive Lovers

Every coffee you drink, should always have the exact same taste.
For those of you coffee connoisseurs who are accustomed to a cup of coffee served by a barista at your regular coffee shop, of course there is no problem with the taste of the coffee you drink.

That's because all baristas have the right calculation between coffee and water in your cup, it's standardized. They have paid attention to the coffee to water ratio, they have the coffee grind size and also the brewing time. These three things are important factors that are taken into account in the process of serving a delicious cup of coffee and the taste character is always the same in each cup.

I got this knowledge since I was a teenager from a close friend who has a barista certificate. He works at his own coffee shop and currently has more than 10 coffee outlets spread across several cities.

He has long answered my question which I made the title of this post. It turned out that later I realized that his explanation was an international standard in the coffee brewing process.

For those of you who brew your own coffee by only mixing water and coffee grounds, it is very important to pay attention to these standards. I quote important information and hope it will also be a reference for all of you to brew your coffee so that it always tastes the same and you will be satisfied with your own brewed coffee.

This standard was issued by the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association), they call it "The Golden Cup Standard", which is a recommendation for Best Coffee Making Practices followed by baristas around the world.

The default consists of 3 main things for Brewing Best Practices, I have made them in the following table to make it easier to understand:

NoElement & DeviceInformation
1Coffee to water ratio55 gr/L ± 10%
2Water temperature200°F ± 5° (93,0°C ± 3°)
3Coffee to water contact time1-4 minutes for fine coffee grounds
44-6 minutes for drops
56-8 minutes for coarse coffee grounds

Specialty Coffee Association

Simply put, I can describe it in mathematical calculations that 55 grams of coffee for 1 liter of brewed water means the ratio is 1:18 for coffee to brewed water. If made in a cup with a capacity of 210 ml, then the ratio is 12 gr of coffee for 210 ml of water.

Because it is a standard and a recommendation, then of course you can make your own comparison ratio depending on your taste. If you want a slightly lighter coffee taste, then you just need to reduce the amount of coffee or vice versa by adding the amount of coffee to get a stronger coffee taste.

When it comes to taste, of course, each of you has your own standards and it's just a matter of "keeping the measure" to get the right and consistent coffee taste based on your taste habits.

"Taste is the absolute property of each of you. If you as a coffee connoisseur still have to wait for your coffee to be served by a barista, then you should not claim to be a true coffee lover."

How about your taste?

It's good to know the correct ratios for making the perfect cup of coffee consistently. I usually just let the machine figure out most of it but the correct water ratio is handy. Thanks for sharing 😁

Thank you for your appreciation @leaky20.
Maybe for some people, the ratio of the components of coffee brewing is a trivial thing. But, to get the best tasting coffee, you have to pay attention to everything.

It's great to be able to share and everyone can take advantage, right?

I had no idea that for a good cup of coffee you need 12gr of coffee, I had thought it was 21gr or something like that, that's the good thing about being in the coffee community I learn something new and better every day haha :D

Thank you for your appreciation Mr @fabian98.
It doesn't matter how many grams you brew in your coffee cup. It depends on taste right? Recommendations are general standards only. !LOL

But if you get used to your usual dose, it's 21 gr. So if you start to reduce it, you will need time to adjust the taste on your tongue and also your body adjusts to the caffeine levels that your body normally consumes. I think, at first it will feel a bit heavy for you, because you are classified as a coffee maniac, right?

The discussion in my post focuses on the consistency of keeping the coffee taste the same in every cup of our glass.

The common ratios used by baristas at well-known coffee shops are 1:13, 1:15, 1:18 & 1:20.
It depends on the customer's request, if the customer has understood. But, if not, customers will always order coffee "like the coffee I ordered yesterday". !LOL

The 1:18 ratio is a derivation of the SCA recommendation which gives the standard coffee to water 55gr/L and don't forget that they provide a tolerance for reducing or increasing 10%.

Are you going to keep changing your coffee to water ratio from normal, Mr @fabian98?

Excellent information to improve the quality of our coffee and ensure that it always has the same flavor, thank you for sharing it.

With pleasure Mrs. @yosoyada.
Thank you for your appreciation.
Enjoy your coffee!
I'm sure, you are a coffee lover too.

It was a pleasure 😉

I can add a brewing time from 8 to 12 hours for cold brew. Also the chemistry of the brewing water is crucial. I know that since the time I was brewing beer at home. Water quality is the point where you have to start. And proper cleaning is another crucial step for achieving the best results. I have to tell that coffee brewing is a very complex thing. Most of the people may skip the majority of these steps and still have a tasty cup of coffee, but it’s really these little fine adjustments that will take your cup of coffee on another level.

Very informative post! Thanks for sharing.
