We have the most amazing fog here in the mountains. It comes with force and sneakability and frosty mysteriousness. It's my daughter's absolute favorite weather and she asks for it every year for her birthday! hehehe
So, I had been waking up and seeing all this amazing fog just coming to say hi in the morning. I got all ready, dressed, gonna go walk in the fog! See!!! for #sublimesunday- fog showed up! and here I go!
- Pants - check (because I don't.. nevermind)
- Warm earband thingie - check (because the ears cannot be cold or else the jaw will freeze and lock and pain will ensue)
- Mittens - check (because I have never met a glove that can make my hands warm. Mittens FTW!)
I was readyyyyyyyyyy.
Except. One step out of the house told me heyyyyyy! 😒 Dat not fog. That's smoke, you idgit.
And one would think that one would NOT choose to walk out for a nice healthy walk in a smoke filled outsideness. One would think that. But one is not the one who put pants on for this, mmmkay?
Now before you get all judgy and healthy on me.... It was SO pretty. LOL
I loved the contrast between the life and death (my impending one, as I hacked up my post-covid lungs. LOL) all around me. You could see some trees that were sacrificed before the fires came - so that we could have some breaks. (See them in the pile there?)
And then you could see some trees that were alive and well and still fighting the good fight! And then clearly, you could see some that had seen better days and were barely hanging on. The smoke was low, and clinging to the ground. Moving in this serpentine pattern. But then above was this bright sun climbing into a blue sky overhead. It was really pretty profound. (cough, cough)
At some point, maybe? (we never really know) Some crews will come back and do controlled burns on these wood piles that were left behind all over the forest. Or... maybe they will become the home to some interesting creatures. I do not know. But I do believe that the INTENT is that they will be burned, if budgets allow?
Here is where you can clearly see where the forest was just razed in order to make some breaks between where the fire was intended to go. and... they worked well!
Here is another view - where this "forest" is now more of a little field? Don't worry! You won't believe how fast more trees grow up in here. In 10 years, this whole place will be filled again - so thick with trees, you'll never even realize that this damage happened. It's quite remarkable actually!
And then this.
I absolutely LOVE rays. Through low-hanging fog, or rainclouds, or even smoke! I. LOVE. RAYS. They are so very special to me! Like God is reaching His fingers through the space to come touch me. I love it. love it. love it.
And this one .... look how beautiful :)
Don't you just want to run through the forest and bathe in all the sunlight? I mean - pretend that its fog. and not smoke. hehehehe but isn't it just so beautiful???
And this... is my very special log.
nope. not kidding. it's mine.
I met this log over 2 years ago. We had a very special moment. 😊 Every time, I go on a walk, I stop by this log and say hi. The bark beetles have been having a field day with it. and now - some other growth is happening there (as you can see in the picture) In my imagination, I pretend that its growing those scales - like a dragon, to protect itself from the evil bark beetles!
As I walked closer to the location of my special log, I worried. Because as you saw from the previous pictures, where the crews came - nothing was left behind. Would my log still be there? It had been vulnerable, on the side of the road? Would it be pushed aside with others, lost to me forever?
And then, I came up to it. and smiled.
My log, still there, waiting for me to say hi. You have to hold onto these special things in life, you know? ❤️

it was SUCH a special important hard sweet sensitive raw day when I first sat on that log and cried my eyes out on the side of the road.
and now... its my special log that reminds me of Love :)
fog or smog or smoke... Sometimes beauty is beauty no matter what is generating the scenery.
I'm happy to see that your return to your home and that your favorite log was not burned.
those new fire break lines as well, perhaps could make for interesting hiking trails, may be the lead to new vistas and locations you haven't thought visit before? I am a optimist though, and try to find a good side to everything even if it's bad.

Finding the beauty after destruction is an art in itself and you sure found it on this walk
As for walking in the smoke, I wont say anything about it being not good for you I will just say with my lung issues it is not something I would risk, or maybe I would to see the cool effect the smoke gives giving a magical mystical feel to the area

i'm so happy that my log was there. when i saw it - i felt like i lit up - and calmed, and was so appreciative and grateful. it really is a very special log.
and yes hehehehe the fingerless gloves make sense!!!
but for some reason - gloves don't work well for me!!! they keep my fingers separate and i need them to be generating heat and pouring that heat into one another without barriers hahahaha
i have had SOME gloves as a kid that worked
but they were like... so puffy i felt like they defeated the purpose of having fingers! hahahaha LOLOLOL

Fire is so life-taking and life-giving at the same time. We need wildfires to spread the seed of the Fynbos plants, so in the same breath fire takes and gives back. Magical. And like you showed with the rays, the smoke can produce some of the most beautiful sunsets. Again the contrast between beauty and destruction. I am glad that your log survived! i love the new dragon scales its growing! and yes - i just saw a post today with a fire in the city - and that is SO much more out of control than ours.
i mean - ours eats up millions of acres of forest land! but..... its away from people - and like you said, necessary for the forest.
but in the city! oh my gosh - just mass destruction.
and i feel like you - the cycle of the life of the forest - so very magical and such a gift :)

It is never easy to digest the destruction when human lives are in the way (not to speak of the poor animals in the wild, but the wild is cruel). One of the coastal towns close to me went under in a local fire caused by a very stupid individual that wanted to have fireworks on New Year's. I think 20 homes got burnt down in just one town and someone died as well. So sad when people are so short-sighted. And I saw earlier this year or so all of the wildfires, I think, west coast California side? It is so sad.
yes - but thankfully - the animals in the wild USUALLY have such a strong sense!!! they alert us before we even know what's wrong (usually) :)
oh my gosh - fireworks and 20 houses and a death!!!! TERRIBLE. oh my gosh. people just do not think
and yes - thats us.... we are central California, in the Sierra Nevada mountains
the fires are a usual thing for California - but this year its our turn to have it be very close...
we are expecting some massive storm coming tomorrow and Monday though - so... that might be the wonderful end of the fires! :)
Oh I hope the storm comes soon! Even though we know that fire is in some sense important, like we said with the spreading of seed, but it is never nice to witness and see. And yes, animals are so smart! Sometimes when I smell fire here, I can hear flocks of birds moving away, and I always wonder were they touched by the fires. Never nice to see the devestation! Good luck and I really hope for some storms and rain!

I was expecting fog and the first photo, I thought, that looks like smoke, then read smoke. 😂 Fog is special to me (another story), so I got excited to see fog. Now, I have to say, these photos are so beautiful, even though it's smoke fog.
Pretty amazing how trees grow up so fast to fill in the space.

i mean the first ones were like - yeah that's smoke. LOL but i kinda liked that too because it gave it like a very desolate kind of quality - especially with those lone little barely surviving trees peeking through. very desperate, but survival still rang through! i dunno hehehehe
and yes - so apparently - my husband just told me that those breaks are supposed to be maintained from now on???? so I guess in THOSE areas - they will try to keep them free and clear for the future? makes sense - and I guess I can get used to it - we have an AWFUL lot more forest so that it doesn't seem sparse... but... hmmm i didn't know! but the places near our house - wow - in like 3 years -y ou'll see all this baby growth... 3 more years... teenager trees that are filling that whole area. 3 more? its a forest again like before! heheheh very cool!

and yes - controlled burns are where they light it - and then stand right there with hoses to make sure it ONLY goes right there... they are very specific burns :)
the wildfires are usually started by people who do things without thinking. like leave campfires burning unattended - or drop lit cigarettes into dry brush! (dumb) or lightning! but controlled burns are MUCH safer :)

the changing of the seasons. I was explaining to my CALI GIRL yeahhhhhhhhhhh i said it. and she IS a native. so nyah! lol My sweet 19 year old daughter who has ONLY been to my hometown... twice??? thrice?? and then - i don't believe the fall colors were on full display.
but i was telling her that people actually like - LIVE for that display hahahaha
and we dont' really have that same thing out here. i mean - changing in the mountains - yeah - but so many of the same kind of tree here. and so many pines.
but out there? red, yellow, orange, brown, and paint all over the mountains!

I absolutely understand what you're not seeing with the changing seasons.
They're purple and yellow and Orange'ish already here, leaves have been falling for weeks. Not back home, though, where I'm from it's sunny and anywhere between 76-82 today.
Yesterday.
The day before.
Tomorrow and the next day and the day after that..
we are getting colder and colder and snow is coming :(
but let me just shhhhhhhhh and accept the snow because its water - and we need water. LOL
We went for a nice drive today. Enjoyed some sites and the tree changing is nice. No phones today. But I have a date with myself next weekend, I have the spot already picked out too, I know where I'll go. Another week.. they're pretty now but next week they'll be golden.
