Around The World Drakensberg Mountain Photography
Visiting photographs not yet shared from 2019 another region to visit again, we arrived early morning in mist, park ranger advised the weather would be low for most of the day, low cloud not enough exploring now a place I would like to book to spend a weekend exploring at my own pace.
Mkhomazi Wilderness Area in the Maloti-Drakensberg Park in the Central Drakensberg Mountains, glimpses between the rolling mist with some views when retreated back down into lowlands.
Checking into the office to request permission to explore without going hiking in wet conditions, this was quite acceptable by Parks Board Ranger.

Flowering during August to December our Spring into Summer months.
Different pine trees have been introduced into South Africa over hundreds of years, they are however not indigenous to the region. Looking up hanging from the branches many air-plants decorating, moistened in morning mist.
Shrouded view one is left to imagination as to how majestic this will look on clear days, slippery underfoot still magical watching the clouds play between the mountain tops.
Wee bit wet we started to meander back down the road, briefly stopping a couple of time or taking a walk to see the river winding down, fresh grasses growing where the hills had a winter burn, golden/yellow where it had been left this year.
Beginning to get lower than the cloud on top one starts to see the sandstone cliffs jotting out.
Aha, a little blue sky starting to show, perhaps more luck once out of the valley to enjoy lower down.
Giant rocks strewn around the valley leaving one in awe as to when this came tumbling down, how long has it been there?
Tenacious trees and grasses eventually break down rocks into the soil, in eon of time this will take on a completely different appearance.
Almost midday we bid farewell to Highmoor a lovely short visit giving a taste of staying for longer hopefully soon.
Back on the road again to seek out adventures.... Thanks for joining me again here in sunny South Africa (well most times sunny).

These huge rocks look great, the different lines of colours are awesome. I know such "painted" rocks and rock faces here too, and although there are explanations why they look like that, I still find it fascinating 😃
The landscape is amazing and hiking around the Drakensberg would certainly be a highlight in my life - who know what the future will bring.

More remote smaller areas where hiking trails are able to be linked. Many caves, different climates passed through as one goes through.
Over the years we have visited one at a time and traversed many when younger, good to be out there.
Giant's Cup Trail overnight, arranged along route that gives you most of what you may looking for.

sorry for my late reply, but I'm not much online these days. I have bought an old VW Caddy and now I'm planning a Campervan conversion. This will keep me busy in the next weeks and thus my online times will be even less 😅 !LOLZ
I have seen videos by South African photographers about hikes they have made in this area. So I really can imagine what beauty you have seen on your hikes.

Oh boy you going to be busy having fun doing a conversion to your liking, congratulations hope the van brings many happy miles in the next few years...., once all the work is done!
Now to plan trips to destinations you have been dreaming of, time goes fast before you know it you will be on the road enjoying what you always wanted.
Mountain getaways always great, not as safe as it was, unless in a group, not the way we explored when young.

My father is a carpenter but I have two left hands - I'm good in planning, but working with my hands is something quite different. I hope it will be different this time though 😀
Times have changed in the past decades - when I was young we have had the mountains pretty much for us alone, but nowadays there are people everywhere. But that's a little different from what you meant, I believe, because here it's still safe to go anywhere in nature 😉

Internet is there to help, something our parents never had, can still ask advice from Dad sure he will be more than happy to take you under wing once again.
Mountains don't change, peoples attitude is problematic. Enjoy when you get hiking opportunity before winter arrives.

Whether in person or in photographs, I like to observe mountains and rocks. That monumentality attracts me more than the sea. Probably the best for me would be mountains and rocks by the sea :-).

Sounds like Cape would suit you best, you have the best of both, here we either go 3 hours inland to mountains, or escape 3 hours up the coast to escape into nature.

Drakensberg Mountains talked about often by those visited the place, one of those place on my visiting list.
Beautiful share!
Closest to you would be a drive to Clarens for a weekend taster plenty of hikes and scenic drives.
Drakensberg via Clarens down to Winterton always more scenic off the freeways, slow as roads never in great condition!

Closest town to Highmoor Mountain Reserve is Nottingham Road and Rosetta in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands, close to both Kamberg and Giant's Castle, on the R103.

Smaller reserves not well known you can end up very much alone, makes it superb being there.
