A Jack of All Trades

in Hive Learnerslast year

Today, I came across a post of @papilloncharity. The following words grabbed my attention

A lady that is fighting a deadly cancer had this to say about life and I will explain it in my own words.
We have to realize that life is not about money, prestige, or ego, but rather about the difference that we can make in the lives of others.

There is no rocket science in this fact to understand that all of us have to leave this world one day. No matter how long we live or whatever we collect, mortality is inevitable.

Sooner or later we will be forgotten. There wouldn’t be anyone to talk about us. Nobody would even remember our name.

However, there is a way to keep us alive. Maybe not in people's consciousness but via the goodness brought to their lives directly or indirectly by us.

If you make a positive impact in one person’s life, that person would become a reason to bring positivity to others’ lives. The chain would go on and the impact travels generation after generation.

While there can be several ways to make a difference in other people’s lives, I think teaching is a method of influencing a huge number of people in a shorter time. As Helen Caldicott says

Teachers, I believe, are the most responsible and important members of society because their professional efforts affect the fate of the earth.

Be it engineer, doctor, science, or any profession you name it owes one profession i.e. the teacher.

Had there not been teachers to transfer the light of knowledge, how could the human race be able to reach the level of information, technology, research and development it is today!

There is no second opinion that a nation needs quality education and good teachers in order to grow, progress and prosper.

Teaching is a profession I have always loved. In fact, I once taught in a school; though for a short period of 5 months. It was a delightful experience to see the pupils respecting me with their hearts (not by force).

When the pupils would display their love for me via their words and/or actions, I felt empowered.

More than a decade has passed since I taught in a school. I still often think of joining some institute for teaching (I just think and have no real plans at least for now, as I have chosen to be a Stay at home mother).

When I think of teaching, the question comes to my mind: which subject would I opt for teaching? Honestly speaking, I am confused.

The reason is that there are more than one subjects that I really loved to study and so I would love to teach them too.

One of my favourite subjects is Mathematics.

The subject makes me lose the track of time. I can spend hours without feeling tired.

However, the problem is that I studied Mathematics only until grade 10. If there is any advancement in the subject matter of textbooks, it would be difficult for me to teach them properly.

Nevertheless, I am pretty sure I can teach the subject diligently up to grade 8.

Something that I would make sure to teach in Mathematics is the practical implications of the topics being taught there.

I have heard students ranting that algebra and/or geometry have no purpose in their lives. It is useless, a waste of time and blah blah. I want to guide my students on how these topics are helpful in their day-to-day lives.

Another subject that I would love to teach is English. It is the subject that I have already taught in the school, and I was elated to be selected as the English teacher.

We all know, in the contemporary era, having good communication skills in English is the need of the time. It makes it possible for us to interact with people across the globe.

Moreover, all the books that we study in higher classes are written in English (by foreign authors). It is crucial to have good command of the language to understand all the subjects.

During my graduation years in the university, I had some class fellows who had difficulty in understanding, reading and writing in English. Despite being hardworking, the lack of command of English created hindrances in their performance.

Whether we accept it or not, the inability to communicate in English causes a lack of confidence. The reason is the problems that the inability brings to a student’s career.

There is another subject, I would love to teach, and that is Islamic Studies.

Islam is a religion that urges its followers to contemplate and be logical about their faith, actions and behaviours. Islam encourages us to ask questions and conduct research.

Unfortunately, the courses designed for Islamic studies are not serving this function. They do not facilitate analytical thinking. Only a pattern of memorization is followed.

I want to go for teaching Islamic studies in order to change the attitude of the students towards this subject. I want to develop an urge for analysis and research about the issues. I want to make them understand the importance of what they are (memorizing) studying.

The list of my favourite subjects does not end here. I would not mind teaching the subjects that I studied during my graduation years. The courses include psychology, sociology, research methodology and general science.

In conclusion, I want to be a Jack of all trades......

You might be thinking of me as the master of none, but I am more focused on the last part of the saying.

Do you know what is it?
Before finishing the blog, let me share the complete saying

A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one. 😉

Yeah, it was really something I wanted to learn, and I owe my parents for this. They made it possible for me to get education from reputable academic institutes.
