One of the things I’ve come to realize is that no matter how bad things might seem to be for you, only you have the power to either see it in a positive light for yourself, or let the darkness swamp and take over, dragging you into the bottomless pit of the darkest recesses of your mind. You have to be willing to let go of the easier stressors that come with some bad situation, choosing to look at things in a way that will be most beneficial to you.
This is because, as you live, you’ll come to learn that the way you see things, how you perceive situations you’re involved in, will also determine how you react to them. And this could be the very difference between what makes or breaks you. That’s why even in adversity, you could see people smiling and being cheerful because in the end, they’ve decided within themselves how they want the problems they face to affect them. And they’re intentional about it.
I just learned about something new, and it's called the Color Walk. This is when as you walk down a road, you pick out a particular color and then see how many things have that color. You could pick blue, then as you walk, you start counting everything that’s blue that your eyes fall on. The sky, the blue sedan, the blue roof, the blue container shop… this is a mindfulness trend that keeps you grounded, and while you walk, also allows you to take note of your environment. Because in that moment that you decide to look at color, that’s when you realize that there is just so much color in nature. We just don’t take note of it.
It’s that feeling you get when you see an ad for a car, and you suddenly love that car. It becomes your dream car, and you would love to own it one day. But then, when you’re on the road, you start seeing the car every few minutes! It comes and goes in different colors. This increases your love for the car, and it would be all you can think of.
So, what changed? Did all these cars magically appear on the road just because you saw an ad you liked? No, that’s not how it works! Those cars have always been on the road, they’ve always been used by people. You just didn’t notice them. It was the moment your mind decided to focus on them that you started seeing them everywhere. Note that there were other cars on the road as well, but you only saw that particular one. You didn’t care about the others because, honestly, you’re just not noticing them.
And that is how life is. When you focus on something, you replicate it, and it follows you everywhere. If you search for a reason to be happy elsewhere, you’ll keep finding it until you burn yourself out. However, if you look inward, focus on yourself, you’ll find happiness follows you wherever you go and whatever you’re going through. In the same way, during a color walk, whatever color you pick to search for, you’ll find it everywhere. The color would follow you like a loyal dog. That’s how the things you focus on will be for you. Focus on what works best for you and watch as it keeps you well-rounded and grounded.
