The edition for this week comes with another amazing and interesting theme which focuses on the issue of addiction either as disease or a choice. Special thanks to the entire management for putting up this kind of wonderful life transformational topic.
Addiction is a condition which involves the use of substances. Addiction is a chronic condition which is characterized by the engagement in behavior. The subject of addiction is a complex and complicated thing that affects virtually everything about a human being. It could affect the physical, emotional and social well-being of an individual. There are different types of addiction it depends on how one would classify them. We have a substance addiction. This kind of addiction involves intake of substance like drugs, alcohol or hard drink. It starts little by little before it increases to chronic stage. I could remember one of my uncles though he's late now however the experience worth sharing probably it would help someone reading through the line of my input at this moment. He became so used to alcohol such that it started manifesting in his body. After a while, he was diagnosed of liver disease. He was so addicted to drinking local alcohol for quite numbers of years. This kind of addiction sometimes is a spiritual thing that needs a serious intervention.
The next kind of addiction is the one that involves the behavior. When there is change in one's behavior either positively or negatively. There are certain individuals that are known for a particular behavior for instance gambling, gaming etc. I grew up in an environment where I had the privilege to meet some individuals that were sold out to the issue of games like draft and ludo. Early morning as others were aiming at something good and better, you would see them going to a place where they would be playing and discussing with other friends. No matter the amount of talk you pass through such individuals it's very difficult to change their orientation towards something better. They are so addicted to it. This is what I called behavioral addiction.
The next kind of addiction is what I called process addiction for instance shopping, having sex etc. let me continue this by sharing a story of a woman that was my neighbor. It would interest you to know that this woman was addicted to shopping every week. Tuesdays happened to be our market hmmmm I doubt whether there's a Tuesday that she doesn't go market. She doesn't sell anything but just to go and buy. Whereas at the other end there are some individuals that are addicted to sex. Infact as if they can't do without it.
What are some signs or symptoms of addiction? When there is failed attempts to stop something. Another one is when an individual doesn't take responsibility and lack of involvement in activities.
The effects of addiction could lead to physical health problems like damage of organs, malnutrition which leads to weight loss. Other effects includes mental health issues, social problem, psychological effects and behavioral changes.
Addiction can be treated when the right support is deployed to overcome it. Some of the options includes medication, therapy etc.
Addiction could lead to disease. The power of choice is in your hands. Choose correctly
The weeks prompt is definitely a deep one. And as you've rightly said, addiction is deeper than what we see on the surface and can put lives at risk. Getting help, speaking up and the likes will go a long way in helping.

Personally I think addiction is more of a choice than it's a disease because we hold the wheel of our lives and can control it as we deem fit.
