Bienvenidos a mi blog 2 idiomas.png

Today is a special day, two beautiful dates are celebrated, one of them is Grandfather's Day, the other is the International Day for the defense of the Mangrove Ecosystem, mangroves are beautiful and peculiar places, I have had the privilege of seeing them, even a small sample, since being in Venezuela and facing the Caribbean Sea, the conditions for their existence are given, the areas of my country where there are more mangroves are those near the Orinoco delta, the San Juan River and the Gulf of Paria, there are trees of considerable height. I had the opportunity to appreciate them, being a child, on a trip we made to a Venezuelan tourist destination called Morrocoy a bay, known for its beauty, mangroves have always seemed beautiful to me, what I did not know was its importance and less how threatened they are.

So, I think many will remember scenes from famous movies in which mangroves appear, if I am not mistaken the Blue Lagoon is one of them and also Pirates of the Caribbean and the Chest of Death, when they go to visit Aunt Dalma, that river surrounded by trees with peculiar roots that seem to come out of the water is a mangrove.

Now, what role do mangroves play on the planet? I will share with you some information that I found because I don't want you to miss anything, as it is very important, the role of these ecosystems:

Mangroves are mangrove forests, trees that live semi-submerged in the coastal marshes of some tropical and subtropical zones. They form in bays, coastal lagoons of brackish water and in estuaries and river mouths. Here the water circulates very slowly and, therefore, sediments from inland are deposited on the bottom, it is a kind of natural filter that prevents a large amount of organic matter from reaching the coral reefs. In addition, sediment fixation creates new dry land.

Mangroves provide high quality wood, very resistant to putrefaction, their waters have a high productivity, which surpasses that of many other coastal ecosystems, they also contribute to prevent coastal erosion and mitigate the effect of large storms since they are true natural coastal defenses.

Mangrove forest formation contributes to the marine food chain. Numerous species of commercially important fish and crustaceans spend at least part of their life cycle in them. Later they will migrate to the open sea where they will complete their development. For this reason they should not only be considered as forests, but also as producers of food and economic resources that allow the life and development of small population centers that live in these extensive wetlands.

Precisely because of the latter, the richness in terms of food, which takes place in the mangroves, puts them at risk because it is not the same a small village that lives nearby and can sustain themselves with them and exploit them in an artisanal way, to a company that wants to exploit the resources present in these ecosystems, which has resulted in damage, deterioration and even the disappearance of some.

July 26 was chosen in memory of the environmental activist named Hayhow Daniel Nanoto, who died of a heart attack on that date in 1998, but only in 2015, at the General Conference of Unesco, it was formally requested to this body to decree July 26 as "International Day for the Defense of the Mangrove Ecosystem", a proposal that was approved the following year, that is, this international date is of recent creation, just 5 years.

On the other hand, the purpose of this decree is to avoid the progress of companies that seek to trade with nature, at the cost of its detriment or damage, due to the exploitation of mangroves, a high percentage of them have already disappeared in the world; these ecosystems are found in tropical and subtropical regions of the planet, because that is where they find the right conditions for their development.

In conclusion, for those of us who have had the privilege of personally seeing these ecosystems, we know how beautiful they are, but after learning about their function and role within the ecosystem, I am sure that they will be admired even more, not only for their beauty, but also for their importance. I leave hoping that these lines inspire you to see "The mangroves" with different eyes and I hope you leave a comment.

Mangroves need protecting with so many people wishing to leave in beautiful regions never considering the devastation we cause. Lovely photography and reading @actioncats

Thanks for your comment @joanstewart, Mangroves are really beautiful. I have had the opportunity to see them with my eyes are beautiful, as you point out, many times to make a trip for pleasure or tourism, humans burst with nature, relazando damage by the ignorance we have of the place we visit, for example people who take out the starfish to take a picture and believe that nothing will happen, ignorance is blatant and bloody, thanks for your view, on the other hand, choose among so many beautiful pictures in the banks of free images was a dilemma.

We regularly visit an area with mangroves and have watched how much human interference has caused suffering in the region.

Once filled with much is now far less, hopefully with time attitude will be changed.
