A really special one

If you visit the Greek islands you'll notice that apart from the seaside settlements with all the touristic amenities, there is also at least one village at a higher attitude, usually not visible from the sea and much older. It is there that you'll find the capital of the island and the remains of the old architecture. If you are lucky enough, you may even catch the vibe of what was life on a small Mediterranean island before the coming of tourism. Myself, I have visited many of those villages and I'll have to admit that the Chora of Kythera is a really special one!

@traisto and myself were there on September 19th, during our big autumn trip. The weather was great, the tourists almost gone and the place was literally glowing under the sweet light of the fall! I always like to take pictures in scenic villages with narrow streets and white houses but sometimes things seem to be more charming than usual and that day was one of those times!

Walking through the main road was like a treatment of calmness and tranquillity! And although it seems empty, almost deserted, it was nothing of the kind. Actually it was me that avoided to take pictures of other people, focusing on the village itself, as an old, wise entity!

The residents have done an excellent job in maintaining their houses in good shape and have done so, taking extra care in every detail! In this case the low scale touristic activity has helped the place to be improved without encouraging large scale, destructive interventions. I only wish that it would be the same for all the places with touristic interest in Greece and in the whole world.

While we were on the road I made a post about this same walk with unedited pictures from my phone. You may find it interesting to compare the two posts and tell me your opinion. You can find that first post here.
The same query was made by @for91days and if you care for a more in depth quest in this matter you can read his posts here and here.

I am ending this post with a partial view of the village, taken on our way to the Venetian castle! But that's for an other post :)

What a wonderful place to wander through. Yes, those little villages further away are just charming, hidden away from all. So much character.

It is really beautiful, what a magical and wonderful place you have described in your photos and words. It really makes you want to be there. I love your photos, I feel like I am traveling just by looking at them.

Thank you @emimoron, I am glad you enjoyed it :)

I loved what you said about photographing the village as an old, wise entity. Your pictures indeed transmit this sense of sophistication and elderly charm :)
It's true that the houses are very well preserved.
Οι 'Χώρες' κατά παράδοση είναι πανέμορφες.. Άλλωστε, πόσα λιμάνια έχεις δει να είναι ομορφότερα απ' τη χώρα;!

Yes, I like old villages very much. Probably that's why I am living in one, although my centenarian house is ready to collapse :)

Κρίμα δεν είναι που το καινούργιο δεν είναι ποτέ ομορφότερο από το παλιό;

Ναι, είναι κρίμα. Πέρα απ' το ότι το παλιό έχει την αίγλη του παρελθόντος, είναι και το ότι στην εποχή μας η ποιότητα είναι δραματικά υποβαθμισμένη.
