The Summer Garden is a park ensemble, laid out in St. Petersburg at the command of Emperor Peter the Great in 1704. The garden was created as a summer residence of the tsar, but later it turned into a public park and became a popular place for walks of citizens. The garden was planned by such famous architects as ean-Baptiste Le Blond, Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli and others. By the end of the 20th century, the garden had become a very romantic place with century-old trees and old marble statues on ancient themes, decorating the shady alleys.
It really was a beautiful garden. But the trees not only grow and provide pleasant shade, they also grow old and decrepit. Even the marble from which the statues of the Summer Garden were made began to deteriorate from rain and snow. There was a need for reconstruction, and reconstruction was carried out in 2009 - 2012. The old fountains were restored (they had been eliminated after a devastating flood back in the 18th century), copies of the marble statues were made of artificial marble, work on the treatment of sick trees was carried out, trellises appeared, closing access to lawns. The debate over this renovation is still ongoing: there are those who like it, those who think it is unacceptable, and those who are just used to it. I really liked the old Summer Garden, but I like the new, refurbished Summer Garden too. It's a pity that we can't combine the two options in one time.
